FROM THE PASTOR

Dear family,

The Santa Sophia Day of Discovery is coming close upon us and for two weeks you have seen advertise-ments to register for this event. I really hope that many of us will be together on Saturday the 20th of

September to learn and grow together.

I have two major hopes that will be our goal for this Day of Discovery that I want you to be a part of:

1) I hope to discover what parts of the mission of the Church are most pertinent for our community to respond to, here in Spring Valley. I pray that with your input, I will learn what you are passion-ate about as to how our community can be a wit-ness to East County San Diego. I have many things that I am passionate about, but I want to make sure I guide and direct the vision of our parish in a way that includes your passions with mine. This day will help us to be collaborative towards fulfilling God’s work. From this hopefully many new minis-tries will be born during our time together as pas-tor and community and others will grow in num-bers, fervor, and outreach.

2) I hope to discover your gifts and talents so that they can be directed appropriately for the parish community. I pray that this will bring about a re-newal in desire to volunteer. I am only one pastor and I only have so much money to use for paid em-ployees. The bulk of the work of the Catholic par-ish always has had to rely on volunteers and so we are always in need of renewal in this matter.

The deadline for registering is Saturday, Septem-ber 13 and is coming upon us very quickly.

On another note (per last weeks homily) please find enclosed on page 6, information on how to make an integral confession and examine your conscience for the sake of being: 1) free from the eternal pun-ishment due for our sins after Baptism, 2) to make a concrete step towards healing and unity in our families, and 3) to bring renewal for the sake of evangelization to the church.

MEET THE STAFF

THE NEW CHILDREN’S WORSHIP BULLETIN is now available. This four page, child size bulletin contains activities related to today’s readings. It is a great way to discuss the Mass with your children. Look for them in the vestibule, the front side tables, and the kiosks or simply ask an ushers.

MEET THE STAFF As mentioned in the letter from the Pastor, we have had a change of some personnel. In lieu of my “Ask the Pastor” column, I would like to continue to introduce the new staff members to the parish. Ask the Pastor will return. The next staff member I would like to introduce is:

David Stevens Director of Liturgical Music

Greetings! My name is David Stevens and I am so blessed to be the new Director of Li-turgical Music here at Santa Sophia. For the past 7 years I have been the Director of Music and Youth Ministry at Holy Family Parish in the

community of Linda Vista in San Diego. After sev-en years at that wonderful community, God has called me here to this one. I have heard so many great things about Santa Sophia and I am excited to meet everyone.

Just a little bit about myself. I have been married to

my beautiful wife Erica for the past 9 years. She

teaches 3rd Grade at Holy Family School, as well as

runs the Religious Education program for the par-

ish. We have one daughter Emma Jean who is 18

months old. I am a veteran of the United States

Marine Corps, where I was proud to be a member

of the Marine Band. I have been involved in

church music since the time I was 8 years old and

God has used music to keep my connected to the

church, even through my stubborn teenage years. I

am passionately in love with God and our faith. I

get so much joy from helping people to worship

God through music. I look forward to worshipping

with you here at Santa Sophia. God bless.

The basic requirement for a good Confession is to have the intention of returning to God like the “prodigal son” and to acknowledge our sins with true sorrow before his representative, the priest.

“To those who have been far away from the sacrament of Reconciliation and forgiving

love, I make this appeal: come back to this source of grace; do not be afraid! Christ himself is waiting for you. He will heal you, and you will be at peace with God!”

Examination of Conscience

Recall your sins. Calmly ask yourself what you have done with full knowledge and full consent against God’s and the Church’s Commandments.

When was my last good Confession? Did I receive Communion or other sacraments in the state of mor-tal sin? Did I intentionally fail to confess some mor-tal sin in my previous Confession?

Did I seriously doubt my faith or put myself in dan-ger of losing my faith through readings hostile to Catholic teachings or involvement in non-Catholic sects? Did I engage in superstitious prectices: palm-reading, fortune telling, etc.?

Did I take the name of God in vain? Did I curse, or take a false oath?

Did I miss Mass on Sundays or holy days of obliga-tion through my own fault, without any serious rea-son? Did I keep fast and abstinence on the pre-scribed days?

Did I disobey my parents and lawful superiors in important matters?

Did I hate or quarrel with anyone, or desire re-venge? Did I refuse to forgive? Did I hurt or cause to kill someone? Did I get drunk? Did I take illicit drugs? Did I consent to, recommend, advise or ac-tively take part in an abortion?

Did I willfully look at indecent pictures or watch immoral movies? Did I read immoral books or mag-azines? Did I engage in impure jokes or conversa-tions? Did I willfully entertain impure thoughts or feelings? Did I commit impure acts, alone or with others? Did I take contraceptive or abortifacient pills or use other artificial means in order to prevent conception?

Did I steal or damage another’s property? How much? Have I made reparation for the damages done? Have I been dishonest in my business

relations?

Did I tell lies? Did I sin by calumny, or detraction telling the unknown grave faults of others without necessity, even if they are true? Did I judge others rashly in serious matters? Have I tried to make resti-tution for the bad reputation I caused?

If you remember other serious sins besides those indicat-ed here, mention them in your Confession.

Before Confession

Be truly sorry for your sins. “The essential act of Pen-ance, on the part of the penitent, is contrition, a clear and decisive rejection of the sin committed, together with a resolution not to commit it again, out of the love one has for God and which is reborn with repentance.

Understood in this way, contrition is therefore the begin-ning and the heart of conversion, of that evangelical metánoia which brings the person back to God like the Prodigal Son returning to his father, and which has in the sacrament of Penance its visible sign and which perfects attrition.” (John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation Reconciliatio et Paenitentia, n.31. 1983.) Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartly sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all be-cause they offend you, my God who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen

You may now go to Confession.

During Confession

You can begin your confession by making the sign of the cross and greeting the priest: “Bless me father, for I have sinned.”

The priest gives you a blessing and you may respond by reciting the words St. Peter said to Christ: “Lord you know all things; you know that I love you.” You may continue with the time since your last con-fession: “My last good confession was… (how many weeks, months or years approximately.)”

Say the sins that you remember. Start with the one that is most difficult to say, after this it will be easier to mention the rest. If you received general absolution, tell this and the sins forgiven then to the priest.

If you do not know how to confess, fell uneasy or ashamed, simply ask the priest to assist you. Be assured he will help you make a good confession.

Page 6: Santa Sophia Bulletin 7 Sept 2014

Page Six Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 7, 2014

Simply answer the questions without hiding any-thing out of shame or fear. Place your trust in God: he is your merciful Father and wants to forgive you.

If you do not remember any serious sins, be sure to confess at least some of your venial sins, adding at the end: “I am sorry for these and all the sins of my past life, especially for… (mention in general any past sin for which your are particularly sorry, for example all my sins against charity, purity, etc.).”

The priest will assign you some penance and give you some advice to help you to be a better Chris-tian.

Listen to the words of the absolution attentively. At the end answer: “Amen.” Be willing to do the pen-ance as soon as possible. This penance will diminish the temporal punishment due to sins already forgiv-en.

After Confession

Give thanks to God for forgiving you again. If you re-call some serious sin you forgot to tell, rest assured that it has been forgiven with the others, but be sure to confess it in your next Confession.

Rite of Reconciliation After the customary greetings, the penitent crosses him-self as the priest says: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The penitent answers: Amen

The priest may say: May the Lord be in your heart and help you to confess your sins with true sorrow.

Either the priest or the penitent may read or say by heart some words taken from the Holy Scripture about the mercy of God and repentance, e.g.: Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.

The priest gives him the absolution:

God, the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The penitent answers: Amen.

The priest concludes confession by saying:

Priest: Go in peace

Reply: Thanks be to God

The penitent should fulfill the penance imposed.

Daily Examination of Conscience

How gentle and loving is Your awakening, O Bride-groom Word, in the center and depth of my soul...Awaken and enlighten me, my Lord, so I might know and love the blessings You ever propose to me, and I might understand that you have moved to bestow fa-vors on me and have remembered me. 1. THANKSGIVING & PRAISE TO GOD: Father, I rejoice in Your love for me. You thought of me and so loved the idea of me that You created me. Each moment You are at work, loving me into existence. Thank You, Father, for accepting me as I am and for the special gifts I have received from you this day (e.g. weather, good book, holy desire, good laugh, etc.) 2. PETITION: Holy Spirit enlighten me to see myself as God sees me, in accord with His living Word. Father, You know me better than I know myself. Please help me be aware of how you worked in and around me today. I wish to respond to Your call for me, with obedience and love. However, for me to follow Your will, I first need to know what it is. Please help me listen and hear the voice of Your Spirit in me that I may see how You see me. 3. REVIEW THE DAY IN GOD’S PRESENCE: Jesus, be with me as I review the previous few hours since my last examen. Holy Spirit, guide me as I ponder Your ways in my life and my responses to the Word of God in my life. Help me recognize and embrace the unexpected ways You choose to renew my life with Your Presence. Ask yourself:

1) How am I feeling right now? 2) Is this leading me to God or away from God? 3) Where was God present to me today? 4) When did I participate in God’s presence in a dis-tinct way today? 5) Was there a time when God seemed to be absent to me today? What was happening? 6) Was there a time when I missed God’s presence and acted in a manner contrary to His Will?

4. CONTRITION: With confident surrender: Father, thank You for Your care and guidance in the last few hours! I am sorry for the ways in which I was not sensi-tive to Your Spirit in me. I love You, Lord, and you know where and how I need healing and forgiveness. I surrender myself to You completely. 5. PRAYERFUL RESOLUTION: Humbly asking for God’s presence and love: Father, with hope I look to the future. You accept me the way I am and You allow me to grow. You give me time and grace, opportunity and space. I place the time between now and my next examen in Your hands. I ask You to make me more sensitive to Your Spirit in me. May my life between now and then be united to the life of Your son, my Lord and Savior, Jesus.

As I go forward with You, Lord, please strengthen the quiet voice of my conscience, Your own voice, in my life. Look at me as You looked at Peter. Let Your gaze pene-trate my heart and indicate the direction my life must take...grant me, ever anew, the grace of conversion.
