TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel — Beware of those who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces and places of honor at banquets (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]).

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; Daylight Saving Time ends; National Vocation Awareness Week Tuesday: The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica Wednesday: St. Leo the Great Thursday: St. Martin of Tours; Veterans Day Friday: St. Josaphat Saturday: St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

THE POOR As Christians, we hear a lot about the witness and ser-vice that we are called to render to the poor among us. However, the poor also have a witness and a service to render to us. Like the actions of the widow in today’s Gospel, the openness and generosity of many of those who are poor, even in the midst of their own poverty, bear witness to the fact that, ultimately, we can depend only on God. Giving one’s all witnesses that God will give all to anyone who trusts in divine goodness. The poor or disadvantaged also serve. They serve judgment on our individual and corporate ways of acting. If people are sleeping in our streets, that is a judgment on our priorities regarding others. At the same time, the poor can act as mediators of salvation. When they care for others they can redeem our indif-ference and insensibility, lead us to care as well, and save us from ourselves. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW? Use concrete visual rules to help children stay safe. Parents in a crowded place, like a playground or store, will often tell their children, “Stay where I can see you.” While the parent understands that this means, “Stay close,” a child does not necessarily understand the limit — when can a parent see or not see them? A clearer direction would be to tell your child, “Stay where you can see me.” This gives them the boundary — they must be able to see you no matter where they go. Now, your child can check in frequently, all while staying in eyesight. For more tips, request the VIRTUS® article “Communication Tip No. 5: Stranger Danger,” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.

"National Vocation Awareness Week will be cele-brated in our country November 7-13, 2021. Please ask Our Lord for more dedicated, holy priests, dea-cons, and consecrated men and women. May they be inspired by Jesus Christ, supported by our faith com-munity, and respond generously to God's gift of vo-cation."
