Bishop of Santa Rosa

August 19, 2017

Dear Congress Participants,

We warmly welcome you to the annual Santa Rosa Religious Education Congress!

The theme of this year's Congress is “The 'Yes' That Changed the World.” As we see in the Gospel of

Luke 1:38, Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your

word.” With Mary's “yes” to God, she conceived the Son of God in her womb.

Our Lady continued to bring Jesus to us with her apparitions at Fatima in 1917. Now, as we mark the

100th anniversary of the apparitions to three shepherd children at Fatima, I invite you to prepare for the

Diocesan-wide consecration on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

This year's Congress prepares us for the upcoming Diocesan-wide Marian consecration. We welcome

Marian theologian Dr. Peter Howard, Patrick Coffin of the Patrick Coffin Show, Luis Soto from the Au-

gustine Institute, Deacon Bob Ellis from the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA and many other workshop

presenters. May we be enriched with their words on Mary's role in our lives.

To close, let us call to mind the prayer of St. John Paul the Great from his encyclical on the Christian mor-

al life, “O Mary, the Mother of Mercy, watch over all people, that the Cross of Christ may not be emptied

of its power...” (Veritatis Splendor, no. 120).

Santa Misa 9:00 AM

(Veritas Splendor, no 120)

1 -12 “An Evangelical Discovers Our Lady”

This workshop examines how the presenter, as a former Evangeli-

cal Protestant, came to embrace the Catholic Tradition regarding

Mary as the full flowering of the biblical testimony regarding the

Mother of the Lord.

Mark Brumley, MA

Mark Brumley is a popular speaker, author, and teacher. He is the author of several works, including The Seven Deadly Sins of Apologetics. He is President of Ignatius Press, and formerly the Director of Communications and of Social Ministry for the Diocese of San Diego.

Keynote Address 10:10 AM - 11:20 AM (gymnasium)

Patrick Coffin Patrick is the founder of Patrick Coffin Media, a platform devoted to the renewal of culture, through the podcast The Patrick Coffin Show and YouTube channel. He is the former host of the award-winning Catholic Answers Live radio show, and the Catho-lic Answers Focus podcast. Patrick has interviewed a wide array of leaders, four presidential candidates, actor-director Kevin Costner, Harry Connick, Jr., Joseph Fiennes, Sir James MacMillan, Cardinals Raymond Burke, Francis Arinze and George Pell, Dr. Scott Hahn, Archbishops Alexander Sample and Salvatore Cordileone, Bishops Robert Barron and Thomas Olmsted, novelist Dean Koontz, Poet Laureate of California Dana Gioia and scores of Christian thinkers and leaders. He is also the author of Sex Au Naturel: What It Is and Why It’s Good For Your Marriage (Foreword by Peter Kreeft); Stay Cool When the Argument Heats Up: Proven Strategies for Calm Conversing; and Once Saved Not Always Saved. Patrick lives with his Peruvian wife and their Inca princesses in Orange County, CA.

1 - 11 “Mary with Child... Good News of Great Joy”

Luke has an extraordinary point of view in narrating the conception of

Christ. He describes the amazing encounter of God and humanity as the

Archangel Gabriel announces the Good News to her, and she wholeheart-

edly expresses her consent. She then shows her overflowing enthusiasm by

going to visit Elizabeth to share with her. We will read carefully and re-

flectively through Luke’s Gospel to share in the inspiration that filled them

with joy.

Fr. John Boettcher

Fr. John has had the wonderful privilege of spending over 2 years in the Holy Land, with countless visits to places mentioned in the Bible. He lived for 7 months in the Holy Sepulchre where Christ died and rose from the dead, 5 months at the site of the Visitation, & a couple of weeks in Nazareth at Mary’s house, where the Annun-ciation and Incarnation came about. Here it says on the floor, “And the Word HERE became flesh.” For 3 years Fr. John pored over these words daily in his doctoral studies on John’s Prologue. He has spent evenings alone in Mary’s house, singing songs of tenderhearted devotion to her as the sounds echoed and reverberated in the giant basilica. Indeed, she herself said, “All generations will call me blessed.” And so it has been.

“MARY, MARY, NOT CONTRARY” (AKA, SHE GAVE THE WORD FLESH)

This is a trek through the teaching of Scripture and sacred Tradition that uncovers the truth about the Catholic traditions

relating to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her unique role in salvation history. Sadly, many misunderstandings of the proper

place Mary holds in the Christian life have led to division and doubt instead of dialogue and devotion. This talk debunks

the major myths about Mary and sets the record straight on her maternal prerogatives. Jesus could have saved us by other

means, but He chose to come through his holy Mother — from whom He acquired His spotless human nature. How does a

living relationship with Mary enhance our relationship to her divine Son? Are Catholics required to accept private revela-

tions? Why does the Church stress the role of Mary when the Bible seems to say so little about her?

Session 1 11:30 AM - 12:40 PM

Holy Mass 9:00 AM

As Santa Rosa Congress opens, we gather to pray, to cele-

brate and have our hearts filled with the Holy Spirit. This

day we ask that the love of Jesus affects us and place our

lives and ministry at the service of God’s people.

5

Session 1 11:30 AM - 12:40 PM

1 - 14 “Total Consecration to Mary...

A Means to the New Evangelization”

An overall look at consecration or entrustment to the Blessed Virgin in

Church history. The class will be summarized in the particular conse-

cration according to St. Maximilian Kolbe and its link to the New

Evangelization as taught in recent Papal writings.

John Galten

John Galten is a husband, father, grandfather & Catholic educator who has taught for 46 years from 6th grade to adults. He also gives retreats & confer-ences on the thought of St. John Paul II. He is supposed to be retired but, alas, he cannot lay the hammer down.

1 - 13 “Living in the Joy of Mary’s Magnificat”

In this workshop we will begin with a philosophical review of Aristotle’s

“Levels of Happiness” as taught by St. Thomas Aquinas then consider

how she who stood at the Foot of the Cross and is lovingly invoked as the

Mother of Sorrows is the same valiant woman who proclaimed, “My soul

magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior”. How can

the Blessed Virgin Mary teach us how to experience & radiate true happi-

ness as we bear our daily crosses in this troubled world?

Mother Teresa Christe, MSSR

Mother Teresa Christe Johnson, MSSR, has been a consecrated religious for more than 30 years. She serves as Mother Superior & Vocations Director for the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa, a religious community erected by Bishop Robert Vasa in 2012. The Marian Sisters are devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and committed to the mission of Jesus Christ through prayerful witness, intercessory prayer, works of joyful evangelization with a distinct devotion to the sacred liturgy. She completed her studies in education, history and communications at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She has taught extensively in both elementary and high schools, served in retreat ministry, and has conducted Catholic Cate-chetical programs for both adults and youth. Currently, she serves as the Rever-end Mother and Vocations Director of the Marian Sisters of Santa Rosa. She teaches Advanced Theology and Campus Ministry courses at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa.

1 - 15 “Devotion to Mary as A Path to Holiness”

We will discuss the St. Louis Marie de Montfort's True Devotion to Jesus

through Mary which was Pope John Paul's spirituality (Totus tuus was on

his coat of arms with a big M.) This is the spirituality also of the Legion

of Mary of which I have been Spiritual Director for 37 years.

Rev. Lawrence C. Goode

Father Lawrence grew up in Redwood City on the same street on which St. Pat-rick's Seminary is located on the same neighborhood, where his mother and grandfather were born. He has been a Parish Priest for 53 years and has served in 10 parishes mostly in San Mateo County where he grew up. His connection with Santa Rosa was working at Hanna Boy Center where he got to know and love the "Valley of the Moon". Also his seminary baseball team played 3 games against a powerful Fort Bragg team. He doesn't remember if they won any of the games. But he does remember winning over the locals." They all rooted for us, the only beardless men in town". Msgr. Gaffey was one of the best players; he could hit! Although most of the Father Lawrence's classmates are retired, he has no plans to retire as of the present moment.

1 - 17 “Do Whatever He Tells You:

Marian Theology and Spirituality”

Mary’s role in Scripture can often seem small if one merely counts the

direct references. The Church has long reflected on indirect references to

Our Lady in the Old Testament and the spiritual depth of her New Testa-

ment presence. We will explore how the Blessed Mother is a model for

Christian discipleship through the lens of Scripture and Tradition.

Rev. David Jenuwine

Born in Detroit, MI, Fr. Jenuwine grew up in a family of engineers. He worked for 18 years in the automotive industry earning two degrees in Engineering and developed vehicle electronics and control software. After a 6 years stint in the US Navy in Japan as an airborne cryptologist specializing in Chinese Mandarin, he applied the GI Bill and Navy College fund to his seminary and theology studies; earning a degree in Philosophy, and then a degree in Theology. He completed his studies at St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in Minnesota. He was ordained by Archbishop Robert Carlson for the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan in 2009, and recently relocated to the diocese of Santa Rosa, and now serves as parochial vicar at St. Apollinaris Church in Napa. Prior to coming to Santa Rosa, he was the spir-itual director for the Saginaw World Apostolate of Fatima (the Blue Army.)

1 - 18 “Our Lady of Fatima: Model of

How to Embrace the Inevitable Sufferings of Life”

The greatest suffering we cause ourselves is in our struggle to eliminate/

and avoid pain. When we embrace it as Christ did on the Cross, all suf-

fering is easier to bear. Learn the true meaning of human suffering, why

we must suffer, and how to suffer as a Catholic, following the beautiful

example of Our Lady of Fatima.

Sr. Mary Rose Mank, MSSR

Sister Mary Rose Mank was born and raised on the East Coast with her five sib-lings. As a religious Sister and Bride of Christ, her greatest love is for Jesus and His Church. This love and her devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary was nurtured through her parents' lived example and fidelity to their vocation of marriage. She has a Master's degree from the University of Dayton in Educational Leader-ship, is a Master Catechist, and has over 30 years of teaching experience. Cur-rently, she serves as Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and ministers in the field of Education and Faith Formation, often giving sacramental and other retreats.

1 - 16 “Understanding St Louis de Montfort’s Total Consecration”

This workshop will discuss the nature of the consecration, its benefits and

effects, its integration into one’s way of life. It also will engage in the

understanding of the concept of “slavery of love,” and provide some refer-

ences to Fatima and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Fr. Joseph Homick, COSJ

Fr. Joseph has been a monk for 34 years, he was ordained a priest 25 years ago. Currently he is a member of the Contemplatives of St Joseph in South San Francis-co. He is consecrated to Our Lady and is interested in all things Marian. He offers the Mass in both Ordinary and Extraordinary Forms of the Roman Rite, and also the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite.

Please provide us with three choices for each Session. We will make every effort to schedule you with your 1st choice.

(Workshop repeated 2 - 18 in afternoon)

Session 1 11:30 AM - 12:40 PM

1 - 23 “A Servant’s Heart”

Do we look at our vocation as a chore? What motivates us to do what

we do? How do we approach life when unexpected things happen? In

this talk, Dr. Hollcraft will respond to these questions and much more

as he explores the depth of the Annunciation and Finding of Jesus in

the Temple. How this all translates to our life as an evangelist and

catechist will also be considered.

Joseph Hollcraft, Ph.D.

Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Joseph Hollcraft has taught at the Middle School, High School, and University level. Founder of Seeds of Truth Ministries, Joseph is an Adjunct Professor to the Avila Institute and host to the Seeds of Truth Radio pro-gram. Seeds of Truth airs daily to the north state of California and can be found as an iTunes Podcast where it reaches thousands of listeners in over 40 countries. Dr. Hollcraft is the author to A Heart for Evangelizing, published with Emmaus Road in May, 2016. Joseph is also a contributing author to the Catechetical review, the Homiletic and Pastoral Review, spiritualdirection.com and aleteia.org. Joseph earned his B.A. and M.A. from Franciscan University of Steubenville, and received his PhD from Graduate Theological Foundation with studies being complet-ed at Oxford University. Most importantly, Joseph is a devoted husband and father. He lives in Chico, CA with his beautiful wife Jackie, and their four children: Kolbe, Avila, Isaac, and Siena.

Sacred Space

In addition to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, this year there will be the availability of a

Sacred Space. Here you can pray the rosary. There are two locations on campus.

The Statue of Jesus, located in front of Room 12

The Statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, located in front of Room 14

1 - 22 “Online Evangelization”

“He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of

the Virgin Mary…” she then ran to Elizabeth’s to share the Good

News, which makes Mary the first evangelist. Today, Mary would

have snap-chatted a pic to Elizabeth and then Uber’d over, they would

have knocked out a bunch of selfies and posted to applicable sites.

They would pray constantly and use different apps to help their scrip-

ture study.

How can we apply what we know in relationship building, ministry,

and evangelization to the world wide web? Where is advertising im-

portant? How to build an audience? When to post memes, videos,

selfies, silly, serious, trending? Where is the benefit to the mission of

the Catholic church especially for the domestic church, families?

Pasquale Talarico

Pasquale Talarico is a singer-songwriter, husband, and father who has served as a youth minister for over a decade and greatly understands the demands of parish ministry. He has also served as Director of Campus Ministry, lead wor-ship at the Steubenville Young Adult Conferences, and served as collaborative partner with CRS, NCYC, NCCYM, and the LA Congress. While involved in full-time ministry, Pasquale transferred his social media experience to assist Orange County, working with local and state. He has re-cently been named Deputy Chief of Staff.

Sponsored by Youth & Young Adult Ministry

1 - 20 “True Devotion to Mary Obliges Apostleship”

Forgotten by many Catholics is a powerful book, "True Devotion to Mary"

written by one of the great saints of the Catholic Church, Saint Louis Marie

de Montfort. This is due in part to the work of Satan, who cannot endure

that Mary be the means of bringing souls to her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

This talk will explore De Montfort's treatise that to seek Jesus Christ, to be

one with Him and to find Him in our lives, the shortest and surest means is

to unite ourselves with Mary. What does it mean then to be true devotees of

Mary? Is praying enough? While prayer and other forms of external expres-

sions of devotion to Mary are important, a true devotee of Mary must also

be willing to work and suffer for the service of souls. In this session, we will

explore the various means by which one can bring others to Christ through

apostolic works of evangelization.

Ando Perlas, Ph.D.

Currently works at Bank of America, Global Funding Unit based in San Francisco. He has been a member of the Legion of Mary serving as the president of the San Fran-cisco Senatus that is responsible for all the Legion of Mary groups located in the dioceses of Northern California, Salt Lake City, Reno, Seattle, Portland, Idaho and Anchorage. He teaches Confirmation classes in two parishes and finds great joy visiting homes of the people seeking out those who may need Christ and the Church in their lives.

1 - 19 “Mother of the New Covenant: Why we believe what we believe”

What the Catholic Faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes

about Jesus, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in

Christ. A Catechetical talk equipping Catholics to speak to Protestants as

well as to Catholics who believe we spend too much time on Mary or that

somehow, our Catholic faith is unbiblical.

Rev. Jeffrey Keyes

Fr. Keyes, is a Catholic Priest in the Diocese of Santa Rosa. Ordained to the priesthood in 1991, he has served as Pastor of St. Barnabas parish 94-2001, Director of Seminary For-mation, 2001-2004, & as Pastor at St. Edward 2004-15. of this event in the life of Our Lady, under the guidance of St. Thomas

Aquinas and the Church Fathers.

Rev. Fr. Joseph F. Previtali, S.T.L.

Father Joseph Previtali is a priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. He re-ceived the Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in 2010. 2 - 13 “Prayer and Family Life”

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has stated that “prayer is what makes

the family strong” and that the first characteristic of a Christian family

is that the family prays. In light of our Holy Father’s recent words and

Our Lady’s call for prayer at Fatima, we will be looking at the im-

portance of prayer in the family, practical ways a family can pray, and

how catechists can assist the family in developing a prayer life.

Sr. Caritas Marie, MSSR

Sr. Caritas Marie, MSSR, was raised with her three brothers on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon. Graduating from Franciscan University with a degree in Fi-nance, she continued studying graduate Theology. After working at the Univer-sity in Residence Life, she took a position running a high school dormitory for international students. This exciting experience was the catalyst for her hearing God’s call to the consecrated life as a Marian Sister of Santa Rosa. Sr. Caritas Marie currently serves as the Director of Marriage and Family Life for the Dio-cese of Santa Rosa.

Plenary Session 1:30 PM - 2:40 PM (Gymnasium)

“Marian Consecration and the Message of Fatima"

Marian consecration as the ultimate individual fulfillment of God’s desire for devotion to the Immaculate Heart of

Mary as revealed at Fatima. We will discuss three paths: Montfort, 30 Days to Morning Glory and daily duty.

Session 2 2:45 PM - 3:55 PM

2 - 11 “The Mother of God and the Body of Christ”

“the Temple from the Virgin”

After Mary consented to the Annunciation, when the Word became

flesh, she conceived a Child. As other babies, He remained within her

for nine months. Mary was continuously in the awesome majestic

presence of God. She was truly a living and conscious dwelling-place

for God Most High. When she and St. Joseph presented Him in the

Temple to fulfill the commandment, her Child was hailed by St. Sime-

on as “salvation” and “light” (Luk 1:30-32).

The Temple is where to encounter God, where He manifests His pres-

ence and invites us to draw near. God makes Himself approachable.

St. John describes Christ’s Body itself as a “temple” (Joh 2:21). St.

Paul even calls our body “the Temple of God” (1Co 3). Our frail hu-

manity can be a way the Almighty dwells among us, even in us.

Clearly the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest way we commune with

divinity, enjoy His presence and share in His good graces. Yet this

same Person became flesh in her womb from her own maternal sub-

stance, and the very way He took to arrive on our altars came about

with her constant companionship and cooperation.

What does Mary have to show us about approaching and remaining in

God’s presence? What help can we receive from her? How can we

arrive at the fullness of grace? We will look for an answer to these

questions in the Scripture, Magisterium and Tradition of the Church.

Fr. John Boettcher

2 - 12 “Why the Blessed Virgin Mary is Key

to Understanding the Purpose of the Universe”

What is Mary’s role in God’s purpose? Was she simply the ‘vessel’

of the Incarnation? Simply a pious Jewish Mother, even if the most

pious of human beings? Or is there much more to the mystery of

Mary? This workshop examines Catholic teaching about Mary in

light of her title “Queen of Heaven and Earth”.

Mark Brumley, MA

8

Session 2 2:45 PM - 3:55 PM

2 - 15 “Devotion to Mary as a Path to Apostolate”

As "A Path to Apostolate" for many years Fr. Lawrence has accom-

panied Legion of Mary members talking to people in the streets of

San Francisco's Tenderloin and other neighborhoods. He has taken

people to Mexico to do apostolate several times.

In this workshop we will discuss and reflect our devotion to Mary as

an Apostolate.

Rev. Lawrence C. Goode

2 –22 “Hail Mary – Our Team Mom ”

Will examine Mary’s motherly instincts with her sons and his

friends, apostles, and disciples. When I played sports the team mom

was extremely influential. We’ll evaluate how discipleship today is

similar to team sports and where the role of our “team mom” fits in.

Stephen Morris

Stephen has spent a lifetime working with youth as a mentor, coach, teach-er, and program director. He’s exercised leadership and vision in academics as well as a toy manufacturing executive. Stephen left the corporate world to serve as a high school theology teacher and coach, and now serves Bishop Vasa and the Particular Church of Santa Rosa. He brings an audience alive with his charismatic personality and practical experience.

2 - 16 “A Deeper Look at Mary

in the Tradition of the Church”

In this workshop you will gain proper understanding of Scripture within

Tradition; Mary in the Bible, Church Dogmas, Sacraments and Spiritual

life. And Mary’s relation to the Holy Spirit and to us.

Fr. Joseph Homick, COSJ

2 - 17 “My Immaculate Heart will Triumph:

Fatima in the 21st Century.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has said it is a mistake "to think that Fati-

ma’s prophetic mission is complete.” Indeed, the message of Fatima is

the message of the Gospel shown forth in the effect it had on people 100

years ago, not to mention the two little saints who experienced the appa-

ritions of Our Lady. This talk will dive into the apparitions and provide a

reflection on how Fatima can be a focus for renewal and evangelization.

Rev. David Jenuwine

2 - 19 “ Mother of the New Covenant:

Why we believe what we believe.”

What the Catholic Faith believes about Mary is based on what it believes

about Jesus, and what it teaches about Mary illumines in turn its faith in

Christ. A Catechetical talk equipping Catholics to speak to Protestants as

well as to Catholics who believe we spend too much time on Mary or

that somehow, our Catholic faith is unbiblical.

Rev. Jeffrey Keyes

2 - 18 “Our Lady of Fatima: Model of

How to Embrace the Inevitable Sufferings of Life”

The greatest suffering we cause ourselves is in our struggle to eliminate/

avoid pain. When we embrace it as Christ did on the Cross, all suffering

is easier to bear. Learn the true meaning of human suffering, why we

must suffer, and how to suffer as a Catholic, following the beautiful

example of Our Lady of Fatima.

Sr. Mary Rose Mank, MSSR

2 - 14 “The Holy Rosary and St. John Paul II’s Letter…

The Family in the Modern World (Familiaris Consortio) ”

This class will connect the Rosary to the Pope’s call for the family to be

the “Domestic Church”. Links will also be discussed about Our Lady’s

requests at Fatima whose Centenary celebration is this year.

John Galten

2 - 20 “True Devotion to Mary Obliges Apostleship”

Forgotten by many Catholics is a powerful book, "True Devotion to

Mary" written by one of the great saints of the Catholic Church, Saint

Louis Marie de Montfort. This is due in part to the work of Satan, who

cannot endure that Mary be the means of bringing souls to her Son,

Our Lord Jesus Christ. This talk will explore De Montfort's treatise

that to seek Jesus Christ, to be one with Him and to find Him in our

lives, the shortest and surest means is to unite ourselves with Mary.

What does it mean then to be true devotees of Mary? Is praying

enough? While prayer and other forms of external expressions of devo-

tion to Mary are important, a true devotee of Mary must also be willing

to work and suffer for the service of souls. In this session, we will ex-

plore the various means by which one can bring others to Christ

through apostolic works of evangelization.

Ando Perlas, Ph.D.

2 - 21 “The Mystery of Our Lady

at the Foot of the Cross: ”

Unpacking the theological content of Our Lady’s role in the redemption of the world, beginning with the prophecy of Simeon through the Assumption, under the guidance of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Church Fathers.

Rev. Fr. Joseph F. Previtali, S.T.L.
