Message From CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Ed Carson

I hope that everyone had a very meaningful holiday season and I look forward to 2018 being very prosperous for our Chamber and Santa Rosa County. My name is Ed Carson and I am your Board Chairman this coming year.

It is an honor and privilege to be elected as the Board Chair. I look forward to working with you all to make this Chamber all that it can be for its members and Santa Rosa County. The Chamber is here to support our members and I encourage you to get involved with the work that we do whether it be helping with special events, being an Ambassador or serving on the Legislative Coalition. I can assure you that you will be able to find a spot that interests you as well as get to know some outstanding business people and peers.

We have a full plate this coming year with everything from getting the new Chamber building built to updating our Strategic Plan. I urge you to get involved during these exciting times. I look forward to meeting new members as well as current ones I haven’t met before!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

CHAMBER CHRISTMAS BREAKFASTThe A. M. Network Chair: Tracy Allen, Eric Cabaniss State Farm Insurance

Many people still don’t know….The Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Informa-

tion Center is not a government agency, we are not funded by the

County, the City, your tax dollars or any source other than by local

businesses, non-profits and individuals that join and two annual

fundraisers, The Leadership Awards Banquet and Dan McKenzie

Golf Classic. We thank the currently 610 members that support our

Chamber, your businesses and your community. Consider joining

if you are not already a member and please remember to support

those businesses and organizations that are a member and make it

possible to keep your Chamber active in our community.

Without A Chamber…………….there would be no office to respond to the inquiries about your community and its opportunities.……there would be no information gathering center with which to inform the business community and advise it of current events affecting them.……there would be no collective force to make known the physical needs of the community such as improved roads, utilities, facilities, safety and the like.……there would be no forum wherein the business community can exchange views and positions, and no voice to express those to other agencies.……there would be no focal point for social gathering of the business community wherein an exchange of ideas and services may take place.……there would be no political voice to keep our elected repre-sentatives aware of the community feelings on legislative action and needs.

Your Chamber is a rallying point, and an instrument for the promo-tion of plans, ideas and projects in your community.

YOU – our members keep our doors open and our offices staffed. THANK YOU for supporting your business community and your Chamber of Commerce.

We Invite You To Join Us……

Congratulations Ray White, split the pot winner (& it was LOTS of $$$).

And the winner is......Kyle Schoolar (we think it was the hat!)

Leadership Santa Rosa Class 30 Graduate! Congratulations Matt Maupin, Leadership Santa Rosa Class 30 participate. Matt made up classes he missed with Class 31 and recently received his certificate of completion and plaque. Job well done Matt!!

What do the Florida weather and the federal tax code have in common? Wait five minutes and it can change.Of course, the pace of change with the weather ap-pears light-years faster than the glacial pace of what governments do with taxes. Nonetheless, every year tax code changes catch taxpayers by surprise when they learn the mutable tax law is going to cost them money. As the new year rings in tax attention anew, some notable reminders of recent rule changes, and an alert as to how the 2017 tax year could differ from years gone by, might be useful.

Filing deadline changes went into effect in 2016, but some taxpayers may still be acclimating to them. So, here is a brief reminder of deadlines for various returns:• March 15 (extended until Sept. 17, because Sept. 15 falls on a Saturday)• Form 1065 (Partnership)• Form 1120S (S corporation)• April 17 (because April 15 is on a Sunday and Washington, D.C., observes a holiday on Monday, April 16; extended until Oct. 15)• Form 1040 (Individual)• FinCEN Form 114 (Foreign bank reporting)• April 15 (extended until Oct. 15)• Form 1120 (C corporation)• April 17 (extended until Oct. 1, because Sept. 30 falls on a Sunday)• Form 1041 (Trust and estate)

The date change for filing certain returns occurred to aid the flow of information better, so taxpayers in need of K-1s from partnerships and S-corps could receive them before the deadline to file their own tax return.Other items that previously benefitted taxpayers expired at the end of 2016 and, therefore, will be

ineligible to any taxpayer in 2017 (at least at this point in time). These include:Exclusion from income of the discharge of debt on a qualified principal residence. So, if in 2017 a lender forgave debt owed by a taxpayer on his or her principal residence, the entire amount of debt forgiven could have major impact on the person’s 2017 tax return.Deduction of mortgage insurance premiums. This is the PMI that many people have to purchase if they borrow more than 80 percent of the home’s value.7.5% AGI floor for medical expenses for taxpayers at least 65 years old. This gave older citizens a lower income threshold to overcome to receive the benefit of their deducted medical expenses. Everyone will now be at 10%.

Above-the-line deduction for qualified tuition and fees. This covered up to $4,000 of qualified expenses for tuition and fees, but was phased out for taxpayers over a certain income level.Energy credit for 10% of purchase price of non-busi-ness energy property.

Of course, in years past many favorable tax items that expired at year’s end experienced a revival in tax extender bills Congress passed in December or into the new year. So, while it may seem like politicians at all levels etch their wishes into solid law, they are in effect whimsy as ephemeral as the Florida weather.

Shuga Beanz The Coles, from the North met up with the Shipley’s from the South and introduced “Shuga Blasters”, and the vision of a drive through coffee stand was born. July 2016 we all sat in the living room of the Shipley’s watching a PowerPoint video helping us all see the bigger picture! Then came the number crunching, constant texting, emailing, power points, and making plans 2500 miles away from each other. Mark’s mining job at the time went on strike and in April 2017 the Cole’s took a leap of faith, bought a house and settled in to Milton, Florida in June 2017. Both families went ALL IN. Shuga Beanz began with a vendor tent, some coolers, a shed in the Cole’s backyard, an espresso machine and a coffee bean grinder off of Craig’s list, along with some homemade signs. We started out getting our name out there at different events throughout the county. We then found our first location at 4976 Hwy 90 in pace and began by setting up our vendors tent from 8am to 1pm each Saturday for 4 months. We all went through SEVERAL trials and tribulations trying to fulfill everyone’s rules and regulations with opening a drive through coffee shop. Not only was the drive through a major accomplishment but our drinks went through several different beans and several different companies and we weren’t getting the cup of coffee we were going for; we couldn’t wrap our taste buds around it…So we decided to really bring the North to the South and try some beans from Kellogg Idaho!! After we opened the bag, the aroma that filled our nose was the one we were going to use from here on out! We are proud to say we get all of our espresso beans from Silver Cup Roasters out of Kellogg. The kitchen turned into a temporary espresso stand, the garage became a warehouse, & we started training! Two months behind schedule, we finally met with the engineer to get our plans drawn up, hit even more road blocks, and had to go YET another route. We decided on a concession trailer to get around all the restrictions, so we ordered it, and prepared to get it late September. Another setback came when hurricane IRMA made her path through the location in which our concession trailer was being built. Finally got the trailer, permits approved, our visions FINALLY became a reality and SHUGA BEANZ opened for business October 20, 2017. The name of our company is Shuga Beanz. We are the first true double window drive through coffee shop in pace and Milton. Not only do we have great coffee, we have Italian sodas, chai tea, jet tea and a fantastic flavor infused energy drink called the Shuga Blaster. You may sit back and tell yourself that the flavor infused energy drink sounds a little puzzling. But this drink is far from the average energy drinks you purchase at the store. You may also think that since it’s an energy drink it must be bad for you. Our energy drink is actual natural flower and root extracts and has beneficial ingredients, unlike canned energy drinks. You can have it infused with any flavor you like and it doesn’t stop there. It can be topped with our signature homemade whipped cream that is a delight to the senses. Our blended Shuga Blasters come as a surprise with swirling colors that are as mesmer-izing to the eyes as the taste is to the tongue. Not only are the drinks out of this world delicious but they are at great prices. But, just when you think that’s all there is, the companies owners are veterans, family oriented, their core values are highly respected, and the customer service is something you don’t see from corporations. So amongst the tall corporate giants that everyone gets excited about, there happens to be a leader in the industry that is making its mark on the community. There is a lot behind our fantastic drinks. We are on Facebook, Instagram, snapchat and a Shuga Beanz website.

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get healthier, you may already be taking the necessary steps, such as improving your diet and increasing your exercise. Of course, phsycial fitness is important to your well-being – but, at the same time, don’t forget about your financial fitness. Specifically, what can you do to ensure your investment situation is in good shape? Here are a few “healthy living” suggestions that may also apply to your investment portfolio:

• Build endurance – Just as exercise can help build your endurance for the demands of a long life, a vig-orous investment strategy can help you work toward your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retire-ment. In practical terms, this means you will need to own some investments with the potential to provide long-term growth. These are the investments that, ideally, you can hold on to for decades and eventually reap the benefits of capital appreciation. Of course, growth-oriented investments, such as most types of stocks, will rise and fall in value over the short term, and there’s no guarantee of profits, or even preserving principal. But if you choose wisely, and you’ve got the patience and discipline to hold on to your investments through the market’s ups and downs, you may well be rewarded.

• Maintain an ideal “weight” – You can help your-self stay healthy by maintaining your ideal weight. This can be challenging – as you know from the re-cently finished holiday season, it’s easy to put on a few extra pounds. And, just as inadvertently, your portfolio can tack on some unneeded weight, too, in the form of redundant investments. Over time, you may have picked up too many similar investment vehicles, resulting in an overconcentration, or “flabbiness,” that

can work against you, especially when a market down-turn affects the asset class in which you’re overloaded. So, you might be better off liquidating some of your duplicate, or near-duplicate, investments, and using the proceeds to help broaden your investment mix.

• Get proper rest – Many studies have shown that we need adequate rest to stay alert and healthy. In your life, you’ve probably already found that if you over-tax your body, you pay a price in your overall well-being. If you look at your investment portfolio as a living entity – which, in a way, it is, as it certainly provides life to your goals and aspirations – then you can see that it, too, can be weakened by stress. And one of the main stress factors is excessive trading. If you’re constantly buying and selling investments in an attempt to boost your returns, you may rack up hefty fees, commissions and taxes – and still not really get the results you wanted. Plus, if you’re frequently moving in and out of different investments, you’ll find it hard to follow a unified, long-term strategy. So, confine your trading to those moves that are really essential – and give your portfolio a rest.

To enjoy your life fully, you’ll want to take care of your physical and financial health – and, as it turns out, you can make similar types of moves to help yourself in both areas.

Each year 57 million Americans experience some type of legal event. These events range from rental disputes to speeding tickets. Understanding the nature of these issues will help you avoid problems and handle whatever comes your way.  As a LegalShield member, you have a network of provider law firms in 50 states and 4 provinces in Canada to assist you and answer your legal questions.  Below are a few examples and tips how Legal Shield and ID Shield can protect you and your family:

1. Protect your smartphone from thieves and hackers. Smartphones contain a staggering amount of valuable personal data, from family photos to emails and bank accounts. Set your phone to automatical-ly lock when not in use. Use strong passwords and update them on a regular basis.  If you are not already an IDShield member, consider signing up. IDShield provides comprehensive identity protection, from proactive consultations and monitoring to restoration in the event of identity theft.

2. Learn how you can prepare and respond to natural disasters. In 2017, we saw the devastation of Hur-ricanes Harvey and Irma, as well as the wildfires raging in the west. These incidents highlight the vital importance of disaster planning.

3. Know your rights as an airline passenger. Air travel can be stressful and expensive, even without delays or lost baggage. U.S. and Canadian air travelers do have some legal rights and protections for common issues such as lost luggage, getting bumped from a flight or tarmac delays.

4. Snap traffic tickets with your smartphone. Police issue more than 41 million speeding tickets a year. Without a LegalShield membership, hiring an attorney to fight your ticket could cost more than $150. If you receive a ticket, LegalShield has you covered. Snap is a benefit of the LegalShield app that lets you to take a picture of your traffic ticket with your smartphone and send it directly to your LegalShield provider law firm.

5. Learn how to spot phishing scams. 2017 saw many high profile cyber-attacks on businesses and individuals. The most common form of attack is phishing, when scammers send emails pretending to be someone else. This scam is popular because it works.

6. What you need to know about short term rentals. Websites like Airbnb, Bookings.com and Homeaway, have made it easier than ever to rent out your home or apartment to guests. For travelers, these websites make booking a stay easy and offer competitive rates. There are some important legal considerations for both the hosts and guests who use these websites. These include local regulations, liability insurance coverage and protecting yourself from scams.
