RACE CAREER OVERVIEW
Santa Monica is the definition of an international competitor. A G3 winner in , she is also a G2 winner/G1 placed in North America. Since shipping to the US in 2018, Santa Monica has NEVER been off the board. As a daughter of the brilliant Coolmore-sire Mastercraftsman , Santa Monica has a strong international pedigree and comes to the sale off of a career-best season.

Breaking outward, Santa Monica rushed up from the start to take a forward position. She remained covered up down on the rail, stalking the moderate fractions of the pace setter throughout with G2W/G1P Proctor’s Ledge immediately to her outside. As the field turned for home, Santa Monica was never able to get outside horses- where she runs best- but still made a bid up the rail to be 3rd beaten a ½ length. She earned a 98 Beyer for this effort and remains 100% in the money in her 5 North American starts to close this season as a G2 Winner/G1 Placed.
Santa Monica turned in two huge performances leading up to the G2 Dance Smartly and used the race as her coming out party in front of this star-studded field. Santa Monica stalked the field, traveling in the back of the pack throughout. Entering the stretch, she went 6 wide to storm down the middle of the track. Inside the 1/16th pole, Santa Monica used her lightening turn of foot to win with ease despite having one of the widest trips of all. In this win, she took down multiple SW/G2P INFLEXIBILITY, G1W DREAM DANCING, MG2W STARSHIP JUBILEE, G2W/G1P HOLY HELENA and MG2P BLETCHLEY.

This race was ridden perfectly by the winners, Manny Franco and G2W/G1P Lady Montdore, who set a glacial pace and went wire to wire. DRF’s Michael Hammersly described Lady Montdore’s trip as “She went right to the lead…while getting away with murder up front, setting a dawdling pace.”
Santa Monica ran 37 feet (approx. 3.7 lengths) further than the winner and was only beat 2 ¼ lengths. This was a big effort by Santa Monica given the pace scenario and showed that she did not take a step backward in defeat. DRF’s Mike Watchmaker agreed:

In her second US start, Santa Monica stepped into Graded Stakes company for the first time in America and ran a huge race to just get beat. She encountered heavy traffic down the stretch and was unable to get a clear run. Nonetheless, she made a very brave move in between horses and was just nosed for 2nd, beaten ½ a length by MG2W HOLY HELENA.

Santa Monica made her US debut against Allowance company at Keeneland. Unhurried early, she made a bid nearing the quarter pole, fanning out into the eight path to blow past the leaders with ease, drawing away by 4 lengths. This race suited her running style perfectly as she was allowed to settle at the back of the pack before utilizing her explosive turn of foot to fly down the lane outside horses.

Santa Monica’s dam, ZACCHERA, is a half-sister to G1 Darley July Cup winner SAKHEE’S SECRET as well as two other Stakes winners. She comes from a very deep family that includes G1 Kentucky Oaks winner NATIVE STREET, G1W ERMINE, G1P SHAHIK and G1P WILDCAT BRIEF.
MASTERCRAFTSMAN currently sits at #7 on European Stallion ranks by worldwide earnings. Ahead of him are DUBAWI, GALILEO, SHAMARDAL, FRANKEL, SEA THE STARS and HELMET, whose son G1W Thunder Snow has single-handedly amassed over $6.4 million in earnings.

A Graded Stakes winner in both Europe and North America, Santa Monica is one of the top 4 turf females in the US this year at any distance. Never finishing off the board in her 5 starts in 2018, G2W/G1P Santa Monica has proven she is the real deal. She comes into the sale as a sound Racing/Broodmare prospect and is more than capable of going back to the track for more Graded Stakes action in 2019.
