Commodore’s Corner Greetings – Hope this finds you all well and ready for the holidays. As I write this, it’s a gorgeous sunny 80 degrees, but cooler weather is closing in upon us. Not to worry, there are still many beau-tiful sunny days ahead for great boating off our coast. We are so lucky to be here in South-ern California where boating never ends. Pity those sailors to the east who are wrapping up and storing their boats for the winter. What a fun Fall Cruise to Dana Point and Newport. Both Dana West Yacht Club and Amer-ican Legion Yacht Club welcomed SMYC with open arms. The food was delicious and the camaraderie was priceless. Going forward, my hope is that our wonderful club continues to have these cruises and social events throughout the year. After all, most members are inter-ested in cruising and being crew. As my term comes to a close with our annual Change of Watch Holiday Party and Installa-tion coming up on December 1st. It has been an honor to serve as Commodore once again, but now I am to turn the tiller over to incoming Commodore Edelgard Rieder. As always - stay tuned to our website, e-mail blasts, and this newsletter for all upcoming events and details. May you all have Fair Winds and Following Seas Susan Rodriguez Commodore for 2019

Editor’s Remark: Please accept my apologies for publishing the newsletter later than usual this month and disregard all past dates.

Announcement: Bob Lamont has been appointed to be our new Treasurer for 2020. Aaron Courts has been appointed to be one of our directors for 2020.

Lesson learned from our Fall Cruise regarding shore power at marinas Several months ago DockWa (an app driven booking search engine for marinas throughout the country) published an article regarding changes being made to improve safety at the electrical pedestals in marinas. We encountered the said upgrade at the Newport Beach Marina which is less than five years old and in compliance with the stricter requirements. Two of the three boats on the Newport Beach leg of the Fall Cruise expe-rienced electrical failures due to the stricter monitoring of electrical cur-rent running from and returning to the pedestal which was causing the pedestal circuit breakers to trip.

You can read the article with guidance entitled “Shore Power Pedestals: Why They Trip, Wir-ing Diagrams, and Troubleshooting Tips” from their September 25, 2019, 2:07 PM, Blog post at blog.dockwa.com posted by Olivia Provencher-Hennedy. If you can’t find it, contact me via email ([email protected]) and I will forward you the page from my email. Why it matters to us: Del Mar marina is scheduled to upgrade the docks and utility services in the next couple of years (that’s in military contracting years so it will likely be a little longer), but most commer-cial marinas have already upgraded. The solutions are relatively simple and, of course, will vary from boat to boat. This is your chance to be ahead of the change, and complete any up-grades you may need on your schedule. It’s coming or has already arrived. so you better be ready at your homeport or underway so that you don’t have to worry about electrical service interruption or worse such as a fire aboard. Happy sailing! Teri Staff Commodore

Editor’s Note: I decided to read the article that Teri is mentioning. In addition, I found another article, published in Power and Motor Yacht Magazine: “Why some boaters suddenly can’t connect to shore power” by Bob Arrington. I consider both articles MUST READ items for responsible boat owners. The recommendation is that boat owners hire a licensed and certified electrical technician to check out their boat and upgrade as necessary. The sooner, the better! Edelgard Rieder, Commodore 2020

SMYC 2019 Fall Cruise November 8 – 12, 2019

Oceanside to Newport Beach via Dana Point

A Fun Success! A fleet of six boats embarked on an extended Veterans Day weekend cruise to Dana Point, and for three of the boats, onward to Newport Beach. We had good wind for several hours on route to Dana Point but conditions changed forcing the fleet to motor the last couple hours to reach the guest docks. Several members went whale watching on Friday afternoon as the fleet sailed its way north. While whales re-mained elusive on this date, the adventurers observed a variety of sea lions, dolphins and sea birds making the trip out overall worthwhile.

The fleet arrived safely and all mustered at Dana West Yacht Club for dinner where the staff went out of their way to welcome us. We were greeted by P/C Helen Haw-kins, DWYC’s social director, who arranged a custom welcome banner and dedicat-ed seating complete with decorations and white linen table cloths. The meal offer-ings were hearty and sumptuous at a generous price point. Members refueled and interacted with the DWYC members present on the busy Friday night. They were welcoming and interested in our military affiliations as well as the cruise itinerary. A good time was had by all. Saturday morning after a hearty Brig breakfast and caffeination for some at the craft coffee shop in Dana Point, sailing vessels (S/V) Seaweed, Passing Wind, and Whisper continued onto Newport Beach while Costal Eddy and Odyssey headed south. Erik remained to enjoy a leisurely day in Dana Point. The Newport Beach contingent berthed for three nights at the Newport Beach Marina Park. We were joined by R/C Kat Wacker and enjoyed the hospitality of the American Legion Yacht Club / American Legion Post hosted by V/C Angelina Garcia, P/C Doug Green and Melanie Green and many others at the Post who embraced our visit warmly. In our down time we explored and dined around town enjoying the laid-back beach town funk of the Balboa Peninsula. Tuesday morning Skippers Steve Hemphill, Shawn Goit, and Teri Reese elected to

make a direct run back to Oceanside from Newport Beach striking out about 7:00 am into dense fog that never burned off. We were forced into a motor transit over about seven hours back to Oceanside / Del Mar Marina due to flat calm conditions and no wind. GPS navigation ruled the day, despite the foggy conditions it was a pleasant day on the water and the transit was smooth. It was a fun event filled weekend with no significant catastrophes, a credit to the preparation and skill of our SMYC sailors and a little grace from King Neptune and no “Murphy’s Law” episodes! There was a big lesson learned to pass along which I have shared on our Education and Safety Page in this news-letter. Thank you to everyone that came out and participated. A special shout-out to newer member Eric Huber who so-loed to Dana Point and to the crew persons that helped staff the boats making the trips possible: Brand-new mem-ber Aaron Courts, P/C Gary Hall, Glenda Gardner, Annette Hemphill, Pam Ross, Patrick Mahaffey, Jennifer Goit, and Andrew Huber on the return leg from Dana Point with Dad Erik in his yet-to-be-named boat. Teri Reese, Staff Commodore

In January 2020 we will install a new president. She has many new ideas that will make our auxiliary stronger. There will be fun and fund raisers. We will still help our chosen charity (Elder-Help San Diego) but we hope to add the IOBG/A Humanitarian Foundation. This foundation has helped our club by providing money for a scholarship. We are plan-

ning to collect even more funds to help many worthy causes. I hope in 2020 our club members will be as generous as in past years. Our club had a fundraiser in October and collected close to $80 to help bring our organization’s total so far this year to over $1000. Many seniors will have happier holidays because of our efforts. It has been my honor to serve as President of the IOBGA this year. It was fun to work with great people for a great cause, including our Secretary SC Marybeth Thayer. I hope to to provide you with more details of our upcoming events for the next newsletter and hope you will be as excited as we are. Have a great holiday season,

Till next year President IOBGA District 15, Audrey Hall

The explosive growth of paddle sports including stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking and canoeing has local, state and federal governments working to ensure there is plenty of paddler access, including paddle craft only launches that make it easy to launch a kayak, increasing efforts to ensure paddler safety and minimizing user conflicts with traditional boaters.

The question is who pays for it? Under a nearly seven decade old federal funding mechanism the answer is : recreational power, sail, and fishing boat owners. A newly introduced bipartisan bill, the Sport Fish Restoration and Recrea-tional Boating Safety Act of 2019, aims to give the Government Accountability Office an opportunity to examine and report on the increasing use of non-motorized vessels and their recycling , a concern for some water-front communities. More details are on the RBOC’S website. SC Gary Hall

NYCSD vs. SMYC GATOR REGATTA, October 25, 2019 A warm welcome was extended to our club race team and our entourage on this sunny Saturday. The Navy Yacht Club hosts had prepared a pre-race assortment of baked goods and fruit for us. So we gathered and conversed mostly about yacht club issues. It was a pleasant way to start our annual competition on San Diego Bay. We had guidance in securing our vessel Catalina Capri 22 from the marina office and we proceeded to the dock. Our hosts helped us to familiarize ourselves with the engine and sail controls on this vessel. The SMYC crew was made up of Susan Rodriguez as Skipper and helms woman, Patrick Mahaffey as sail controls/tactician, Joe Palmiotti as bow man/rail mate. Our boat ventured on to the bay and we located the committee boat. But gusting winds coupled with heavy chop forced us to leave our jib furled. Radio contact ensued between the boats discuss-ing the cancellation of racing because of unsafe conditions. A compromise was struck: with jibs furled we would race back to the Fiddlers Cove Marina. At the start of the race we headed into the chop and our crew developed wet bottom syndrome. We gallantly pressed on and, if you don't mind me saying so, we had a spectacular start. After crossing the start line we knew that we lacked a strategy on how to get the bucking boat back to the dock. Our competitors headed North on the Bay. We headed South trying to convince ourselves that we had a better shot of securing a win. We had traveled for about thirty minutes on our southerly heading when the committee boat lost sight of our vessel. They contacted us via radio to make sure we were still afloat. We politely informed the race committee that our boat and crew were safe. Our plan seems to have had some credibility. As we tacked and headed to the finish our competitors were staring at our stern. We crossed the fin-ish first and then set to secure our vessel to our dock. In true sportsmanship fashion we helped our hosts tie up and tried not to gloat. But somewhere in our minds there was a little voice softly say-ing ''We Kicked Ass Today''. Post-race was enjoyable as burgers, hot dogs along with beverages were served by the Navy Yacht Club. We engaged in club talk with general thoughts about how to keep our clubs viable at times when it can be difficult to attract and retain members. The thing that makes me feel good about club membership is that it brings folks together with common interests and produces new bonds and friendships (compared to staring blankly at TV, computers, or pads). We hope that Navy Yacht Club and Santa Margarita Yacht Club will continue to produce enjoyment through sailing and ca-maraderie for many more years. Fraternally, Joe Palmiotti

OORAH REGATTA, November 2, 2019

SANTA MARGARITA YACHT CLUB vs NAVY YACHT CLUB SAN DIEGO

On a very pleasant Saturday morning the Del Mar Marina became an active place as our members

were starting to prepare for the invitational event between SMYC and Navy Yacht Club San Diego.

The forecast was for clear skies and light to moderate winds. This regatta is the final sponsored race that our club hosts for this 2019 season so we like it be a bit special. Well, we think it went several

notches above special! We think - and this not be boastful - but we wanted to do the best any club could offer in true hospitality and camaraderie, and we did that in abundance. Navy arrived with four

crews to match up against our select team of four crews. Our pre-race coffee, bagels and baked goods

allowed the members of the two clubs to mingle and chat before we got down to the business of racing. The course was set and the Skippers met to discuss rules and the course. Then it was time to hoist

some sails and get upon the water for the business at hand which is keeping the Bull Dog Trophy sit-ting in our clubhouse. The eight boats had light wind at the start of the first race but skippers and

crews were able to make the starts competitive. The wind built as the morning turned to afternoon. As the five races progressed the starts and rounding the marks became a bit more exciting. Having all

eight Capri boats on the course was exhilarating for the committee, boat crew. and the spectators. I

am sure that plenty of photos were shot, and hopefully they will be shared at a club venue. After the last race the boats gathered the race marks and headed to the docks for tie-up and clean up. The

scores were totaled and the crews and skippers had moved off the dock to the club house. Navy had a total of 123 points and SMYC had 67 points so it's low scoring that wins. Which means the Bull Dog is

secured in-house for another year. The best scoring team for SMYC were Tom and Glenda Gardner

who hoisted the trophy as we toasted with champagne. We enjoyed an excellent spread of chili, corn-bread and deserts. Yes, we had a good day and being

that most of the teams had ladies on board I would like to say in a very polite and respectful way "SMYC

Kicked some Tush” today. I want to acknowledge and

offer a tip of the hat to everyone from our club and Na-vy who made for a special day in the basin. You can

have all kinds of yacht clubs but in my estimation the very best of clubs compete on the water with military

spirit.

Respectfully, Joe Palmiotti, Race Committee

Eight Days, Forty Races Series, Open to SMYC Members - 16.5 Capri’s and 12.5 Catalina Expo’s
