Santa Lucia Branch #89 November 2014 Big SIR Bruce Adams sez: This month Vic and I went to SIR training in San Jose. The training is set up to train little sirs how to be big sirs. Even though I was big sir last year I learned a few things that should help our branch next year. I found out that there are 134 branches in California and our branch and nine others are the only ones that are increasing in membership. I thank all of you for bringing in new members. If some of you have any ideas about more activities please contact me or someone on the board. Some of the other branches play bridge, pinochle and cribbage. They have book swaps, cooking, and hiking and walking groups. We already have golf, poker, and bowling. The bowling group is getting very small and they would like more SIRs . If you need more information please contact Earl Fuller. Let’s keep growing and having fun. Meeting: 12 Noon 2nd Wednesday Exec. Board Meeting: 10am 2nd Wed. Salinas Elk"s Lodge, 614 Airport Blvd. Sons in Retirement is a non-profit public benefit organization devoted to the promotion of the independence and dignity of men in retirement. Attendance Rules: Regular members missing meetings for three (3) consecutive months without notifying the Attendance Committee with a valid reason, or attending fewer than six (6) meetings over a twelve month period, may have their membership terminated following notification by letter of unsatisfactory attendance. Certified attendance at another SIR Branch counts for the purpose of satisfying these rules. Can't make the meeting? Call Richard Bawcom 484-9098 or Norm Graulich 455-8043 November 12 Menu: Roast turkey with all the trimmings, dinner rolls, coffee and pumpkin pie Little SIR Vic Lanini sez: Big Sir Bruce Adams and I attended a training workshop on how to make your Sirs Branch better. I found the information very enlightening much of it applies to our club. Most importantly was the need to keep the membership numbers up in the club and that for the most part is through making it a fun group to belong to. We rated pretty good in comparison to some other groups, but were not at the top of the list. I urge you once again to bring your friends in and get involved in not only the fun stuff, but become a director or event chair. November starts the holiday period with Halloween followed by Thanksgiving, and you all know the drill after that. Race to the end of the year. Have a great Thanksgiving to you and your families, and remember that in December our meeting will include wives, girlfriends or whatever floats your boat. Today's Humor.... Media Approach to News A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Washington , DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents. The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain, the lion jumps back, letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event. Addressing the Harley rider, he says, "Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life." The Harley rider replies, "Why, it was nothing, really. The lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right." The reporter says, "Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed . I'm a journalist, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page. So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?”The biker replies, "I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican." The journalist leaves. The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page: " U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH!" ...
