A PERFECT FITCANDACE RAULERSON
18
“The whole group is like one big family. Everyone is extremely helpful and they really want you to succeed at your job and provide ample opportunities for you to futher your education by offering in-house training.”
-Candace Raulerson, Santa Fe College student and Mindtree intern
The skills she learned in the program are right in line
with the expertise needed at Mindtree. Raulerson’s
goal for the next five years is to continue her
education toward a bachelor’s degree while working
her way up at Mindtree, a place she says already
feels like home.
“The whole group is like one big family. Everyone is
extremely helpful and they really want you to succeed
at your job and provide ample opportunities for you to
further your education by offering in-house training.”
With all that working, studying and training, she barely
has time for much else, but in her spare time (when
she has any) Raulerson enjoys – what else? – Online
gaming. Of course.
assignments that will change from day to day.
“I would most definitely recommend the ITE program,
especially to students who like working on the
back-end of websites. What the program teaches
is how to make the website function and to make it
interactive with the user,” Raulerson said.
Who knew a few computer classes in SF’s Dual
Enrollment program – long before the Internet – could
lead to a career in website programming? Candace
Raulerson’s education path came full circle at Santa
Fe College this year with an A.S. degree and an
internship at Mindtree.
“I’ve been interested in computers ever since I can
remember. I took a few programming classes during
my senior year of high school with Dual Enrollment at
Santa Fe and just fell in love with it,” Raulerson said.
“Then when the Internet came along I learned how
to make websites for family and friends. It was just
really fun to me so I decided it was time to take my
education further so I could make a career out of it
instead of just a pastime.”
At 43, Raulerson is not your typical college student.
Studying Internet Services Technology (IST), she
will graduate with her AS degree in August. In the
meantime, she is finishing up her program as a Santa
Fe Ambassador for Mindtree, which will lead to an
internship position with the company this summer.
In 2012, Mindtree, a global information technology
solutions company, opened their United States
Delivery Center (USDC) in Gainesville near the
innovation Hub, creating over 400 new jobs locally
and becoming a community partner to Santa Fe
College.
Raulerson describes her job at Mindtree as “a
perfect fit” with her degree in IST and the Information
Technology Education (ITE) program at SF. Raulerson
looks forward to her internship position as a Software
Engineer trainee, working on a variety of different

IT skills are essential in all industries and are necessary for many different job roles.
Graphic design, multimedia production, Web design and development, networks design
and development — information technologies are everywhere and all around us today, and
they are pointing in the direction of the world of the future.
With small classes and qualified instructors, ITE gives students the support they need to
succeed. Students gain more than skills; they gain the confidence they need to excel in an
exciting career.

Student Maid in 2009 and brought the business to the
Incubator that same year. After just 14 months in the
Incubator, Hadeed was ready to move Student Maid to
a new location and continue its success. She spent the
next four years fashioning her cleaning and concierge
business from a local startup into a full-service industry
leader.
“[Student Maid] is one of our most interesting and
successful incubating companies,” said Dug Jones,
Assistant Vice President of Economic Development at
the CIED. “It’s a great example of what we aspire to
accomplish with our program.”
Jones noted the qualities that help a company flourish
while incubating are the same ones that continue to make
it prosperous once a business leaves the Incubator. A
combination of an innovative idea, persistence and a
strong network seem to be the keys to victory.
Student Maid is the perfect example. Hadeed grew
her business from a one-person operation in 2009,
to a company that now boasts 350 employees during
peak seasons, has served over 2,000 residents in the
Gainesville area and was recognized as the Gainesville
Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Leading Women’s
Enterprise” in 2010 and 2011. And, the company recently
opened a second location, in Pensacola, on May 1.
Student Maid exclusively hires students with GPAs of 3.5
or higher who demonstrate a knack for customer service
and a willingness to go the extra mile. In Gainesville,
Student Maid hires students from the University of
Florida, Santa Fe College and local high schools and will
employ students from the University of West Florida and
Pensacola State College at its new location.
Hadeed was looking to expand, and Pensacola’s
sizeable student population and supportive Chamber of
Commerce made it a top-choice for the new site.
“Our plan has always been to expand to other cities, and
we’re so excited about this opportunity in Pensacola.”
Hadeed said. “It couldn’t be a more ideal situation or a
more perfect time.”
Hadeed is also the founder of Gainesville’s very own
speaker conference, FreshSpark. Similar to the TEDx
conference format, FreshSpark will bring 12 renowned
speakers to the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Hall for
its “reThink: Success” exhibition. Speakers such as
entrepreneur and author Simon Sinek, and Byron Young,
owner of Corda Roys who was recently featured on the
hit ABC television show Shark Tank, will share insider tips
on business success in quick, high-energy presentations.
Hadeed’s success is one to be celebrated, but she is
humble about her upward mobility and thankful for the
local support she has received.
“I want to thank the Gainesville community for helping
us grow and for believing in us. We are so lucky to have
such a fantastic support system and couldn’t be more
excited to grow the Student Maid brand,” Hadeed said.

PROGRAMSBACCALAUREATE
The Bachelor of Applied Science program in Clinical Laboratory Science prepares students to enter the workforce as Clinical Laboratory Technologists or Medical Technologists. In this profession, graduates are responsible for developing, performing and evaluating laboratory tests used in medical diagnostics and clinical research. As part of their baccalaureate program, graduates typically focus their health-related clinical capstone on a specialty area in which they will eventually seek employment such as chemistry, hematology or microbiology.
Clinical Laboratory Science degree courses are taught primarily at the college’s Charles R. and Nancy V. Perry Emerging Technologies Center in Alachua. This BAS program also requires extensive clinical laboratory rotations, so students should expect to spend time in local hospitals and clinical sites in the senior year.

The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education includes classes covering preschool curriculum, social and emotional development, classroom management, and developmentally appropriate practices. For practical experience, students utilize SF’s Little School, an on-campus preschool program for children ages 14 months to 5 years, including two prekindergarten classes.
Bachelor’s degree programs like SF’s help elevate the status of early childhood education by raising the pay scale of preschool teachers and retaining more students hoping to earn higher degrees. In the past, teachers wanting to earn bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education often had to switch focuses because more advanced degrees simply were not offered in the field.

The Bachelor of Applied Science program in Health Services Administration is an online program that prepares students to enter the workforce as Medical/Health Services managers. In this profession, graduates are responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and supervising the delivery of health care. They may be specialists managing specific clinical departments or generalists managing a facility or system. Their work as managers involves a complex array of factors impacting today’s health care environment: technology, regulations, accreditation, innovation in treatment and delivery, system finance and insurance reimbursement.
Courses in the Health Services Administration degree are taught almost entirely online with the exception of a final capstone internship class that is taught in the field.
HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program is a limited access program designed for registered nurses who are graduates of an accredited associate of science in nursing degree program (ASN). Upper division coursework will consist of 30 credit hours addressing topics related to leadership and management, nursing theory, research, culture, pharmacology, community health, and population-based nursing across the lifespan. The coursework will be completed mainly online in asynchronous instruction. There will be one course with a lab experience and two courses with local clinical experiences. All BSN degree seeking students are required to complete the same basic requirements as traditional baccalaureate students, including general education courses and demonstration of foreign language competence. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program adheres to the state’s common course prerequisites. Due to the specialized nature of the BSN Completion Program, individuals are required to consult with an academic advisor when applying for admission. The program is planning an initial site visit for accreditation.

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Organizational Management (SOM) program is the only one of its kind in Alachua or Bradford counties. The SOM program prepares students for management and supervisory positions in a variety of professions. The program provides a career and educational pathway for students who have earned an Associate of Science degree in a professional and technical discipline. The SOM program also provides an excellent opportunity for individuals who have already entered the workforce but are interested in acquiring business management, leadership and supervisory skills. The program builds directly on SF’s AS and AA degrees in business administration, and indirectly on technical degrees in other areas. Students are exposed to the theory and practice of business management including finance, economics, law, human resource management and organizational behavior. The degree culminates with a capstone course where students put into practice the theories and principles they have studied in the program.
