Our 2014-15 season opens with a musical voyage to Scotland!

Mendelssohn’s visit to Scotland impressed him so profoundly that he set down his feelings in a symphony. This alluring music will transport you to the coun-try’s misty landscapes, heathered moors and rugged coastlines.

As a counterpoint to Scotland’s wild beauty, we are delighted to wel-come back the luminous and poetic playing of pianist Robert Thies. This musical virtuoso returns to lend both depth and brilliance to Beetho-ven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, a work tailor-made for his talents.

Join us for our opening concert− a great start for the beginning of this musical journey.

Journey to two different places at two different times as we pres-ent Vivaldi’s best known work, The Four Seasons, along with Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, Astor Piazzolla’s spirited and tango-inspired Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. Piazzolla’s music is infused with Argentinian flair combining elements of tango and jazz.

Experience the meteorological and cultural differences between Mediterranean Europe and the heart of South America as we present the genius of Vivaldi and Piazzolla side by side.

The Orchestra’s very own violin-ists will be featured as soloists in this concert.

We close our season with a journey of the heart as we pres-ent music of Robert Schumann, known as the most romantic of the romantic composers. Schumann created his Symphony No. 2 at a time when he was deeply in love, filling the music with romance, high emotional turmoil, stunning warmth and even humor. The symphony builds to

a final state of joyous fulfillment and hope.

Our journey has one final destination – the fireworks and drama of Èdouard Lalo. We are proud to feature Sphinx’s First Place competition winner cellist, Christine Lamprea performing the splendor and Spanish flair of Lalo’s Cello Concerto in D Minor.

One hour prior to every concert, Santa Cecilia Orchestra invites the audience to experience music by making music. We provide an array

of instruments from each of the orchestra families− strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

Adults and children are welcome to try their first instrument, try a new instrument, experiment and have fun. You will never listen to a master performance the same way again!

Discovering Music is the Orchestra’s award winning educational program that has reached more than 170,000 children in 60 schools in Los Angeles. The initiative is really a series of programs that bring the beauty and power of classical

music to stu-dents at every level.

The founding program offers elementary school chil-dren maximum exposure and access to music, providing one orchestra musi-cian per class-

room for every classroom in the school, assuring every child direct and person-al contact with the musicians.

The musicians’ willingness to share their experiences with music so freely invites a dynam-ic exchange with the children,

who find a fascinating medium through which to explore their own potential. Throughout a school year we offer more than 1,000 individual and chamber performances in classrooms!

Our String Program consists of weekly one-hour group les-sons on violin, viola or cello throughout the school year. The lessons take place during school

hours to augment the regu-lar curriculum and are taught

by specially trained string instructors with extensive professional experience in

music. Each year culminates in a performance for peers, fami-lies and the community.

Discovering Music

Our mentorship program for mid-dle and senior high school stu-dents includes exposure to a full range of instruments including all strings, woodwinds, brass and per-

cussion. The program was designed to help students who already play musical instruments with improving their technique and musician-ship.

Every program in Discovering Music is free of a charge to the schools, children and families participating.
