7 THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith.

These teachings are derived from: the Gospels and the words of Christ; papal statements and encyclicals; and Catholic bishops’ statements and pastoral letters. Catholic Social Teaching calls us all to work for the common good, help build a just society, uphold the dignity of human life and lift up our poor and vulnerable brothers and sisters.

#1 Life and Dignity of the Human Person Every human person is created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, every person’s life and dignity must be respected and supported from conception through natural death.

— We must recognize we are all brothers and sisters which requires us to respect, value and uphold a common dignity for ourselves and each other.

— We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person.

For more information go to the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at www.usccb.org. The 7 themes are the foundation of our Social Awareness and Justice Ministry.

OUR YOUTH HELP BISHOP KICANAS PREPARE FOR THE 2018 SYNOD Pope Frances wants to hear from the youth and young adults of our church, so our Diocese has set up listening sessions to gather their input. The very first listening session in Tucson was for teens. It took place on Friday, June 23 at St. Thomas More Newman Center and three of our teens and I were in attendance.

We began with evening prayer and Mass with Bishop Kicanas. After Mass, we were invited downstairs for pizza and our feedback for the Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment.

A synod is an assembly of the clergy and sometimes the laity (you and I) in a diocese or other division (in this case it was with youth) of a particular church.

We concluded our session by separating the adults from the teens. Then Bishop asked the teens to be honest in our responses. He told them not to respond in the way they thought we wanted them to respond. The questions were displayed on a screen and the youth were asked to respond either in small group sharing or by using their phones and viewing their responses on the screen.

Our teen participants said that they felt validated from our church. Pope Frances really cares to know what they think and so does our Bishop. They realized that they are members of our church now, not just in the future. Overall, it was a really fun experience, and we were well represented by our teens, Angel Ballesteros, Diana Valdez, and Jacob Truman. Thank you for your honesty and for going.

The following day youth leaders met at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish for us to be able to give our perspective in the churches role for our youth. Pilar and I attended this very informative session. The listening session for Young Adults, ages 18-29, will be on September 10, see page 8 for more information about this session. If you are interested in attending this session or would like more information, contact Pilar at 825-9611, x109 or [email protected].

This World Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment is sixteen months away, and our diocese wants to be ready.

PRO-LIFE REFLECTIONS FOR EVERY DAY Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever – Hebrews 13:8

REFLECTION: The teaching of Christianity on the sanctity of life does not flow from some historical circumstance, political ideology, or changing opinion. It is based on the person of Jesus Christ who does not change.

He is the perfect reflection of the Father, the source of all life. That is why the Church holds that its pro-life teaching “is unchanged and unchangeable” (The Gospel of Life, 62).

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, give us the constancy and fidelity of perseverance to our pro-life commitment until the end of our journey.

ATTENTION: ALL YOUNG ADULTS Pope Francis wants to hear from you!

Are you or someone you know between the ages of 18-29 years? Then don’t miss out on this opportunity to have your voice heard!

Our Diocese has set up ‘listening sessions’ to gather input requested by Pope Francis in preparation for the 2018 Synod: Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment. Bishop Kicanas invites all youth and young adults to attend these sessions and share their answers to questions, which will be studied by the bishops. The input gathered at these sessions will be part of a report submitted to the US bishops in September and, subsequently, to the Vatican for the synod next year.

All young adults, whether active or not in the church, are invited to attend the listening session on Sunday, September 10, following the 11:15 a.m. Mass at St. Thomas More Newman Center, University of Arizona.

Can’t make it on September 10, take the Vatican’s online survey here: https://goo.gl/nVSbhZ
