• JUUL’s popularity has grown dramatically, representing 72% of the current electronic smoking device (ESD) market share
• Initially heavily marketed towards youth on social media

Increased Popularity
E-cigarettes are now the most popular tobacco product
among youth.
Within Santa Barbara County:
•The the local California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) shows that between 2016
and 2018 the use of electronic smoking devices almost doubled from 6% to 10%
in 9th graders and in 11th graders from 8% to 15%.

National Academy of Sciences issued a report in January 2018: Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes
FINDINGS
• E-cigarette use increases chances of youth ever using combustible tobacco
• Youth that smoke cigarettes and e-cigarettes end up smoking more cigarettes rather than less
• Insufficient evidence that e-cigarettes are an efficient catalyst for cessation
Dangers of Youth Nicotine Use
Health Effects:
• Key brain receptors impacted: can alter brain development & lead to impaired cognitive functioning later in life
• Higher chance of nicotine addiction
• Greater vulnerability to addiction to other drugs
• Damages lung & heart tissues
Chemicals
• 60 chemicals have been found in e-liquids • Can cause upper respiratory infections
• E-cigarette flavors — even those approved for ingestion — have not been studied for toxicity if inhaled over long periods of time
