Dear Friends and Supporters,

There is a passion shared between every single donor and our Board of Directors to ensure that people, who would not normally have a chance, have the opportunity to receive a college education. The ability to succeed in this venture of helping people transform their futures has not only been shown by community colleges at large, but by this community college in particular.

At Santa Barbara City College, we understand that if we, as a country, hope to maintain our role as a global leader, we need to have a vibrant, educated populace. We understand that, though our success begins at the individual level, it ultimately extends out to our local community and even further - to the country as a whole.

Our belief that all people deserve a higher education leads us at SBCC to focus on and create programs that ensure the success of our over 28,000 students. Some of these programs are highlighted in this annual report, and we thank you for investing in the creation and sustainability of these programs. Because of the assistance provided by these initiatives, we have SBCC graduates who never envisioned a high school diploma, yet alone a college degree, that are now among the top scientists and technologists in the country.

Thank you for these past four years. Although my term as Board President has come to a close, I look forward to serving beside you for many years to come.

All the very best,

Neil KreiselBoard President

SBCC NAMED TOP COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN THE COUNTRY

3 SBCC FOUNDATION

SBCC Named Top Community College in the Country

Let’s Celebrate! The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program named Santa Barbara City College the co-winner of the 2013 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.

As the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance in America’s community colleges, the Aspen Prize recognizes institutions for outstanding achievement in four areas: student learning outcomes, degree completion, labor market success in securing good jobs after college, and facilitating minority and low-income student success.

You are a big part of what makes SBCC #1 and we would love to take you on a personal tour of our campus to showcase the impact of your support! Call the Foundation today at (805) 730-4401.

By the end of her senior year of high school, one SBCC student had already been incarcerated multiple times, was involved with local gangs and had little insight into her future. Four years and countless hours of dedication later, Edith Rodriguez flew out to represent Santa Barbara City College in Washington, D.C.

“It’s touching, I would never picture myself in our nation’s capital. I went back to the time when I was a disappointment to my family, then thought of where I was in that moment and it was just the best feeling,” said Edith Rodriguez, former Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOPS) President. Now, Rodriguez is preparing to transfer with an associate degree in liberal arts with an emphasis in math and science. She also has a separate associate degree in physics under her belt. All of this, and she didn’t even graduate from eighth grade.

“(Back then) I didn’t know any other way to live. My cousins didn’t go to school. I lived in a bubble. I knew it wasn’t the right thing but it was the only thing I knew,” she said. “At the same time my brother was getting incarcerated with me too. He had gotten into big trouble and he was looking at a couple years as a juvenile and I remember seeing how heavy that was on my family and I realized, ‘Oh my god, what am I doing?’” It was that day she decided to make a change.

Consequently, Rodriguez returned to Santa Barbara High School. In the last few weeks before graduation, a representative came to inform students of SBCC’s Running Start program. Running Start is fully funded by generous donors in our community. Students take two classes in the morning and are tutored in the afternoon. They go on field trips and are paid $100 a week if they fulfill all of the requirements. The program is meant to inspire the educationally unprepared as well as low-income students to pursue a better future.

Rodriguez was hooked. She took down the presenter’s number and made sure to contact him immediately in regards to the program. The number belonged to Alfonso Corral, EOPS student program advisor, who would recommend her for the Aspen Award trip years later. “You could tell that she was a go-getter, she was calling and emailing me before I even got the information out. You could tell that she wanted to be a part of the program,” said Corral. Just weeks after barely graduating from Santa Barbara High School in 2009, Rodriguez began attending SBCC regularly, and fell in love with all the school had to offer.

During her time here, she was President of EOPS and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She is currently a part of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Her main focuses right now are her academics and an internship at UCSB where she assists in programing hardware. Her actions have not gone unnoticed. When Superintendent-President Lori Gaskin called Rodriguez to announce she had been chosen for the Aspen Award trip, she was shocked. “I realized I was the only student going. It gave me the chills. Knowing that the hard work that I’ve done has paid off,” said Rodriguez.

“It was an honor to be there to represent our school because I’m so thankful for the staff here. They helped me all the way and encouraged me. I feel like I have a little family. When I needed the support I found it, and that’s why I stayed.”

Dear Friends,

Thank you for welcoming me to Santa Barbara with such open arms this past year. As my first year as president of SBCC comes to a close, I couldn’t be more honored to work in lockstep with you to see our students’ dreams become a reality.

For the past thirty-four years I have had the honor of working in the California Community Colleges and have been witness to hundreds of thousands of students coming through our doors, seeking both the skills that can lead to a meaningful career and also the solid academic background that can lead to transfer to a baccalaureate level institution.

Your support provides the infrastructure for tutoring centers, writing labs, and programs to foster student achievement. It is because of you that many of our students, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to pursue higher education, are now SBCC graduates, and have gone on to pursue degrees from other colleges and universities across the nation. With your help, SBCC alum are now local business owners, scientists, teachers, nurses, and so many other contributors to our local community.

Your support, encouragement, and commitment to these students inspire me daily. I am deeply grateful that we are able to join together to pave the road toward our students’ goals and aspirations and to collectively help shape our students’ future in such profound and meaningful ways.

With great appreciation,

Lori Gaskin, Ph.D. SBCC President

Dear SBCC Foundation Family,

You really did it! In a time of unprecedented budget cuts for community colleges and fee increases for students (tuition has nearly doubled over the past two years), the Santa Barbara community embraced an unprecedented goal of raising over $5 million to support SBCC student success. Thank you!

With your support, the SBCC Foundation exceeded its goal, raising 38 percent more over the prior year. The result? Thousands of SBCC students were able to receive the resources they needed to achieve their goals and pursue their dreams.

Santa Barbara City College is a gateway to a world of wider opportunity, offering programs to prepare students for career success and lifelong learning, and smoothing pathways to four-year universities. Philanthropic support has never been as crucial to providing access to higher education. Your participation is vital and we are so thankful for your commitment.

In gratitude,

Page 8: Santa Barbara City College Foundation 2013/2013 Annual Report to the Community

Dear SBCC Foundation,

My college experience and education would not be possible without the support I receive through SBCC and the SBCC Foundation. Let me explain:

My college life started last year when I was accepted into the Running Start Program. Even before my college life, I had the dream of wanting to be a doctor or business woman, but didn’t think it was possible. The Running Start Program taught me how and showed me the path to pursue my dream of transferring to UCLA.

Not only that, when I couldn’t buy all my books because of how much they cost, you gave me an emergency book grant. Now, I’m studying all the time in the computer labs you pay for and in the library that’s open on the weekends because of you. Thank you so much!!! I now feel there are no limits to achieving my goals. I promise to make you all proud.

With appreciation,

Ana Aguilar

From Troubled Youth to SBCC Commencement Graduate Speaker with Honors

This year’s inspiring commencement speaker was graduating student Robert Gutierrez, who earned degrees in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Gutierrez said he was nervous to accept the honor of being the keynote speaker, but pushed past his fears, “because I have found that nothing in this life is worthwhile unless there is risk to achieve it.”

Gutierrez’s parents migrated from Mexico to the Carpinteria area and worked long hours, leaving him without guidance or the motivation to put in an effort at school, he said. Poor decisions followed that led to a “first-class ticket” to Wasco State Prison and being in and out of jail for about seven years.

In 2008, he took his first big risk in life and enrolled at Santa Barbara City College. He said he discovered his goal to be a bioengineering researcher during an animal biology course by Blake Barron and has since been accepted to prestigious universities.

Gutierrez said he couldn’t have done it without SBCC’s Extended Opportunity Programs and Services, the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement Program, his girlfriend, and many professors who believed in him.

There’s a Spanish saying that, translated, is “he who seeks, will find.” Every time he was released from jail, Gutierrez said he tried a job and failed at it — but never gave up.

He said the most powerful lesson came from his prison cellmate.“You know what kid? You are very intelligent, but you’re stupid,” Gutierrez recalls him saying. Gutierrez wouldn’t accept that at first, but said he came to value the man as a mentor, and the one who finally made him realize he was focusing his energy on the wrong things.

“I went from being a troubled youth to graduating with honors from Santa Barbara City College,” he said. “I went from being a nobody, perceived as weak, to being your 2013 commencement speaker.”He ended with his lesson of his own to everyone listening: It’s never too late.

“For the children in the audience whose parents didn’t go to college, it’s not too late,” he said, in Spanish and in English. “For those who were incarcerated or told you’d never amount to anything, it’s not too late.”

Meet Kathy Molloy

SBCC Foundation salutes Kathy Molloy! Kathy, SBCC Professor of English and English Skills is an inspiring instructor whose professional life and career has been dedicated to student success.

This year, with insight backed by solid research, Kathy explored the integral role played by enlightened, engaging instruction in ensuring positive learning outcomes for the diverse student population found on community college campuses.

Her research and experience led to one conclusion: students need to feel directed, focused, nurtured, engaged, connected, and above all, valued. The task is the job of everyone on campus – not solely instructors, but the entire staff, from groundskeepers to the registrar.

Kathy received the SBCC Faculty Excellence Award in 2007. In addition, she received the Stanford Stroud Diversity Award from the California State Academic Senate in 2011.

Express to Success

Seventy percent of students enter SBCC with assessment scores requiring remediation prior to taking college level courses. This lack of academic preparedness and the resulting low retention and college completion rates are the reason for the development of the Express to Success Program.

Research shows that the major barrier to students persisting in college is the amount of time it takes to remedy their basic skills deficiencies. “Time is the enemy for these students,” SBCC’s Executive Vice President, Jack Friedlander said. “ESP enables them to get through college in only three years, rather than the current average of six.”

Sixty percent of full-time city college students are at jobs more than 20 hours a week—a quarter are working more than 35 hours weekly. Add to these stats that roughly one-fourth of city college students have children of their own to support.

These numbers make it clear: when it comes to college completion and transfer, success and persistence go hand-in-hand with accelerated completion.

60 percent of full-time city college students are at jobs more than 20 hours a week—a quarter are working more than 35 hours weekly.

DID YOU KNOW?

This year, the SBCC Foundation gave out nearly 900 scholarships and awards to over 500 students.

Larry “Pays it Forward”

“I remember when I was released from prison for the fifth time. I have also been released from juvenile detention centers and county jails on numerous occasions,” describes Larry Davidson, Transitions student at SBCC. “I knew that I was tired of jails and prisons and that I wanted to change my life. It is easy to say or think that I could change, but in all reality the question was, how was I going to do this?” While staying at a transitional living

home, “I heard some guys talking about SBCC and this program called Transitions. I heard that this program was for people with a similar lifestyle to mine–and who wanted to change.”

Davidson is now well on his way to achieving a college degree and he helps others on their path. “After going through the Transitions program I have developed a passion for learning, a passion for education, and I want to further my education and further my career goals. The Transitions program has given me a chance to reevaluate my life and the determination to succeed and become a productive part of society. I have gained a sense of self-worth, a sense pride, and sense of accomplishment.”

Davidson is not unlike the other Transitions students—who come from the streets, from drug addiction, from juvenile hall, and from prison. Some of them are one strike shy of life in “the system”. Others have never known an adult life outside the criminal justice system. College is the last place any of them expected to end up.

Transitions empowers these young people to change the course of their lives and their futures, and obtain a college education. State of California Recidivism rate: 70%; Transitions Recidivism rate: 0%

SIMMS/MANN INSTITUTE • SBCC CHILDCARE SERVICES

11 SBCC FOUNDATION

The Impact of Funded Childcare for SBCC Students

Consider this: childcare expenses for a nine-month academic year for the children of student-parents range from a low of $4,050 to a high of $10,350 in Santa Barbara County.

“Obtaining funding so that struggling parents can gain a college education is the only viable way to break the cycle of poverty for these families,” says Marsha Wright, EOPS Director at Santa Barbara City College.

The average college graduate earns an annual income that is 38% more than that of a high school graduate. For low income parents, it is not the lack of intelligence or motivation that holds them back—it is the inability to afford the childcare necessary to pursue a college education. Meeting this need contributes to student success in the educational setting.

The Simms/Mann Institute addresses the challenges of our time by reaching back to where it begins—where we begin to emerge and develop as individuals—ages zero to three. The fast-paced lifestyle of today’s world, which has been created by technology, globalization, and changing economic conditions, has threatened the healthy development of the child, the family, and the community. The Simms/Mann Institute for Education and Community Development was created to address this threat.

This is a unique public/private partnership that is offering professional development

opportunities to SBCC Faculty and Staff whose focus is on children ages 0-3. This is the first program of its kind to be implemented at the Community College level. Community Colleges in California educate more than 70% of early childhood educators.

Center for Lifelong Learning

SBCC has created a self-supporting Center for Lifelong Learning, offering classes designed to meet the interests and needs of adults in all age categories in Santa Barbara County.

Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL), offers a rich and diverse array of low-fee classes that will be attractive to and available for a broader range of community residents than was possible in the past. The community-building that develops in and out of the CLL classrooms will continue to enhance the entire county – providing new and renewed skills to those who need training and re-training, as well as intellectual and creative outlets for those who simply want to continue their education.

For the 2013-2014 school year, the Center for Lifelong Learning will offer 1,000 classes spread over four terms—fall, winter, spring and summer. By 2018 approximately 1,500 classes will be offered year-round. It is projected that the number of unduplicated students will grow from 5,000 in 2013 to approximately 15,000 in 2018. CLL serves a diverse cross-section of the Santa Barbara community at all “adult” ages.

CLL Courses include a range of topics:

• Parenting

• Fitness

• Arts and Enrichment

• Personal Finance

• Health and Spirituality

Meet Andy Harper With a true vision, Andy Harper was appointed Executive Director of Santa Barbara City College’s Center for Lifelong Learning in February. Andy has worked for the SBCC Continuing Education Division as a program director since 2009. Prior to moving across Highway 101 to SBCC, Andy worked for nine years at UCSB Extension as Director of Language and Culture Programs.

Before discovering the wonders of Santa Barbara, Andy held leadership positions at the University of Tampa in Florida, the University of Central Florida, Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman, and at Schreiner College in Kerrville, Texas. In addition, Andy has also lived and been a classroom teacher in London (England), Montpellier (France), Cairo (Egypt), and San Sebastian (Spain). Andy has a B.A. degree in Comparative Literature from the University of East Anglia (U.K), and an M.A. degree in English as a Second Language from the University of Hawaii. His certifications also include Executive Leadership, Program Planning and e-Marketing.

Jim Mooy, SBCC Professor of Music, has seen the musician’s life from all sides. As a student, Jim studied music from childhood, attended SBCC and moved on to UCLA for graduate work. His life as a performer spans Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom Corps (performing in every venue in the park), independent southland gig work, and overseas performance in Japan, Canada and Mexico. Have trumpet, will travel.

But the third aspect – teaching – is what causes Mooy’s musical heart to sing. His experience teaching private lessons while still in high school was the hook.

The glamour of the road couldn’t begin to top the dual attractions of family life (Jim and spouse Liz share four fine children) and introducing young – and some not-so-young – talent to the intricacies of music – especially jazz.

SBCC’s phenomenal Jazz Studies Program – established decades ago under the leadership of Dr. Chuck Wood – has benefitted from Mooy’s inspirational instruction, dedication, and infinite energy. During his 17 years of leadership, SBCC jazz ensembles have racked up dozens of first place finishes at a variety of competitions and jazz festivals, notably an uninterrupted string at the Reno International Jazz Festival in a division designed specifically for community college jazz groups.

Always looking to kick it up a notch, three years ago Mooy ventured into deeper water, entering SBCC in the brand new, exclusive, and challenging Next Gen Jazz Competition for a chance to be on stage at the pinnacle of cool, the Monterey Jazz Festival. For each of three years entered, SBCC has been invited to compete. Only six bands nationally are invited – including the likes of USC, UCLA and CSU Northridge – and no other community college has ever been invited more than once.

Music Scholarship Honors Dr. Don Richardson’s Memory

Dr. Don Richardson was a strong supporter of choral music throughout his career, and a strong supporter of the SBCC Quire of Voyces, of which he was a founding board member. Dr. Richardson was a music professor, composer, author, conductor, and radio commentator covering the arts.

To honor his memory, the Quire of Voyces and its supporters undertook the creation of this scholarship in his name.

The first scholarship award recipient is Brandon E. Thibeault, who received $1000 which will further his education in choral music. Brandon was selected by audition for Music 185, Applied Vocal Lessons, and has showed tremendous growth in this area. He has been a featured soloist for several Concert Choir performances and will be joining the Quire of Voyces in the fall.

The endowed fund will provide scholarships for choral music students at Santa Barbara City College.

Scheinfeld Center Trains Future Entrepreneurs

Spearheaded by the generous support of the late James D. Scheinfeld, Santa Barbara City College’s Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation (SCEI) is a leader in the advancement of excellence in entrepreneurship education and practice.

The Scheinfeld Center enables its students to earn an Associate of Arts Degree, Certificate, or Skills Competency Award as they build their own businesses across eight courses. The courses are offered in the evenings to make them more accessible to employed students from a variety of disciplines and to allow for local entrepreneurs to come and speak.

The New Venture Challenge, where students pitch their business concepts to the public and a panel of judges, serves as the capstone experience for SBCC Entrepreneurship students and also promotes youth entrepreneurship by inviting high school students to pitch. The winners earn up to $15,000 in combined seed capital and scholarship opportunities.

For students that desire a more creative approach to building their businesses, the Scheinfeld Center also offers a one-of-kind Enterprise Launch program, where students take their business ideas from conception to launch in a single semester. Several successful student businesses have launched as a result of these programs.

The Scheinfeld Center also partners with the SBCC Career Center to offer students internships. Also, twice a year, it hosts the Enlightened Entrepreneurship Series; a series of intimate conversations with local entrepreneurs that can be attended by students and the public.

Additionally, both the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Center for International Trade Development have partnered with the Scheinfeld Center to provide business counseling and global trade development at no charge to SBCC students and the community.

Continuing to its legacy as a cutting edge educational institution, Santa Barbara City College is currently planning the addition of an Eco-Entrepreneur Program, which is the brainchild of Dr. Adam Green, the Director of SBCC’s Center for Sustainability. The first-of-its-kind program will provide SBCC students with the scientific and entrepreneurial training to create products for the new economy; develop new businesses; join environmentally and socially responsible businesses; or transform profit or non-profit corporations with an ecological and multidisciplinary perspective.

The program will combine existing courses in entrepreneurship – currently provided by the Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation – with new modular classes that combine the sciences and sustainability. New courses that will be launched as part of the program will be Global Warming, Water and Energy, Pollution and Toxicology, Life Cycle Analysis, Evolution of Biodiversity, and Basics of Environmental Regulation.

The goal of the program is to go beyond the scope of training SBCC students for existing “green jobs” and instead train students to innovate, recognize, and create new opportunities in business that protect our ecosystem function, prioritize the well-being of their workforce, and create a profit.

The program is aimed at both traditional undergraduate students as well as existing business owners that want to modify their business practices through a flexible class schedule, which will include predominantly online courses. For more information on the Eco-Entrepreneur Program, contact Dr. Adam Green at [email protected] or (805) 965-0581 ext. 2394.

The Luria Family and SBCC Few names are as synonymous with generosity towards Santa Barbara City College as “Luria.” The contributions of the Luria family to SBCC - which span over five decades - have been consistent and widespread. Almost every area on campus has benefited from the family’s generosity.

The late family patriarch, Eli Luria, is the namesake for the campus’ Library and Learning Resource Center, which his wife Lee and daughter Kandy Luria-Budgor continue to support by donating funds so that the library can remain open on the weekends and to underwrite the Luria Library Resident Program.

Also, as fervent supporters of the SBCC scholarship program, the Lurias have created a handful of scholarships and also fund the President’s Scholarship, the most significant scholarship awarded to an SBCC student annually. They have also been Running Start Angels, allowing students that may not attend college otherwise to come to campus and receive extra support as they begin their higher education journey.

The creation of the school’s two continuing education centers—the Schott and Wake centers—was aided by the Lurias, and the Glass Arts Studio at the Wake Center bears Lee’s name.

SBCC has benefited in many other ways from the Lurias’ love for art and their keen artistic visions. Four sculptures on campus - the most notable being The Mentors Fountain, which is a jewel of the West Campus landscape - were donated by the family. Additionally, Eli designed three of the campus’ entrances as well as a sculpture garden on East Campus.

The Lurias provided the lead gift for the Luria Conference and Press Center at La Playa Stadium, which has become a hub of campus activities such as meetings, conferences, fundraising activities, and classes, in addition to its game-day functions during football season. The beautiful gated entrance of La Playa Stadium was also erected thanks to the Lurias.

The Lurias’ generosity extends well beyond their checkbooks as they have contributed countless hours to SBCC. Eli served on the Board of Trustees, including two terms as the Board President. He helped create the SBCC Foundation and also served on the Education Advisory Council. Lee, a SBCC alum, has served on the Board of Directors for the Alumni Association and the Adult Education Board. Continuing her parents’ legacy of giving to SBCC, Kandy currently serves as a member of the SBCC Foundation board.

THE LURIA FAMILY AND SBCC

2012/13 COMMUNITY ANNUAL REPORT 20

The Luria Library offers a dynamic, innovative, and exciting place for students to learn. The library responds to the needs and learning styles of today’s student, helping them achieve their learning outcomes, enrich their lives, establish careers, and see the value of libraries in relationship to their learning. The library’s tag line is: Explore. Learn. Grow.

The Luria Library is a dynamic, vital hub of the campus. On average more than 4,000 students visit the library per day. Thanks to donor support, the library and its services are available well beyond the regular hours of building operation - vastly increasing the accessibility to library resources. When creating a library environment that is welcoming, outreach and activities are essential.

The library regularly hosts events which draw students to hear poets, playwrights, faculty members, and student panelists. Special events include the Edible Book Festival and Day of the Dead exhibition.

OUR MISSION

To support SBCC students and programs through sustained philanthropy.

PRESIDENT’S COUNCIL

21 SBCC FOUNDATION

President’s Council Spotlight: Liz Auchincloss

If one were to search this beautiful campus by the coast, they would be hard pressed to find someone who epitomizes loyalty to SBCC more than Liz Auchincloss.

Liz - who serves as a Technology Services Specialist III on campus - has completed the trifecta of SBCC involvement, having filled the role of student, teacher, and dedicated staff member. Additionally, she can boast an 11-year membership in the SBCC Foundation’s President’s Council as another avenue through which she shows her dedication to the College.

This October will mark her 24th anniversary as an employee at SBCC and, after nearly a quarter of a century on campus, she continues to hold great affection for the College.

“I like the fact that this college helps any student; it gives people another chance,” Liz said. “Here the teachers are really interested in teaching the students. They are student-focused, as opposed to being driven to do research, and that really helps our students.”

As for why she chooses to give back to SBCC through the President’s Council - in addition to the hard work she puts in day-in and day-out for the College - Liz attributes her generosity to seeing others close to her reap benefits from their attendance at SBCC.

“I have had a lot of siblings that have come here and I’ve found a home here,” Liz said. “I think the Foundation does good work and it’s important to me that the Foundation runs.”

To join the President’s Council – with gifts beginning at $1,000 - or to renew your membership, contact Lisa Skvarla at (805) 730-4412 or [email protected].

The President’s Council is the cornerstone of philanthropic support for the SBCC Foundation. Members of the President’s Council provide the annual resources that enable the Foundation to support academic and vocational programs, student services, scholarships and a wide variety of other College priorities.

Meet Robyn Parker

Robyn Parker’s original college plan fell by the wayside when she stepped into her USC dorm room on move-in day. The freshman realized that she was not ready to leave Santa Barbara and informed her parents immediately of her change of plans – “I’m going to City College.”

The decision proved to be the right one for Robyn, who benefited from fantastic academic counseling and personal interactions with her professors at SBCC, before transferring two years later to UC Santa Barbara, where she earned her degree in Business Economics.

The former General Hospital actress now works in philanthropy, serving as the Program Associate at the Hutton Parker Foundation and additionally as the SBCC Alumni Association President. We sat down with Robyn to discuss her love for SBCC and why she has chosen to give back.

What did you enjoy most about your experience at SBCC?Besides the incredible view overlooking the Santa Barbara Harbor? I’d have to say it was the teachers. After attending a private high school, I still craved that one-on-one attention from my instructors. At SBCC, the classes are still small enough that the education can be personalized to the student’s needs.

What drew you to become involved with the SBCC Foundation? Many people don’t realize that it’s the Foundation that supports many of the College’s essential programs; the best way for me to give back was to get involved. I’m thrilled to be the President of the Alumni Association and to be in the position to give back to the school that I hold so close to my heart.

What are your goals for the Alumni Association?I want to make the Alumni Association an exciting way to be involved with the College and an avenue to give back to an institution that has helped me and so many others to attain their goals. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, educating, or just getting back on campus – our goal is to reunite Vaqueros. We have some exciting opportunities for networking and career development such as our unique “Meet Your Career Match” play on speed dating and are hosting an Alumni Association Football get together. Trust me; it’s going to be a fun year for SBCC alums!

Why do you think people should join the Alumni Association? The better question is “why not?” If you love SBCC and appreciate everything that it has done for your education and beyond, there is no better way to give back and stay connected to what’s happening on campus than to become a member.

Join the Alumni Association for free by visiting sbccalumni.org or contact [email protected].

HONORING HAL THORNTON

23 SBCC FOUNDATION

The Long and Winding Road Harold (Hal) Thornton (1916-2012)

This year the Foundation and Santa Barbara community lost a dear friend, Hal Thornton.

As an SBCC supporter, Hal’s accomplishments were legendary: founding member of the SBCC Foundation and Board member from 1978-2012; 1973 Bond Committee member (leading to the purchase of West Campus); and Continuing Education donor and advocate (as Thornton Auditorium at the Wake Center is testament).

Hal was a tireless champion of SBCC. Hal played a decent game of bridge, delighted in friends and family, and loved his wife of 71 years, Jeanne. We miss his gentle wit, insightful reflection, and golden counsel.

Message from SBCC Foundation

The philanthropic support provided by our generous donor community significantly impacted the lives of thousands of SBCC students this past year. Because of you, 900 students received the tuition assistance they needed to stay in school and purchase text books. Because of you, the library remained open on the weekends and evenings, with an average of 4,000 students benefiting daily from this improved access. Hundreds more, who never envisioned that college was in their path, graduated this year thanks to the academic counseling, tutoring, and guidance made available through your critical support.

SBCC Foundation funds programs and scholarships directly benefiting students at Santa Barbara City College. Formed by a group of community leaders, the Foundation is committed to making higher education attainable for all in the Santa Barbara community.

Scroll Society:Your Legacy…Their Future

The Scroll Society honors college friends who have made provisions through their estate plans to support Santa Barbara City College.

We thank them for their generosity and foresight. With their help, SBCC will remain strong and future students are assured of opportunity and access to higher education.
