Expert AnalysisBy Brad Free

BEST BET: Miss Pippa (1st race)

First Race

1. Miss Pippa 2. Lady Ten 3. Playful Humor

It is closing day of the Santa Anita winter meet; Hollywood Park's spring meet begins Thursday. Second-time starter MISS PIPPA is sitting on a win. She ran well in her debut, racing midpack and finishing fifth in a sprint won by the pacesetter. She trained well before and following that even-paced effort, and ran like a filly that will improve at this longerone-mile distance. LADY TEN has something the top choice lacks. That is, established form around two turns. The four-start maiden has two recent runner-up finishes in turf routesincluding a good try last time behind next-out allowance winner Bobina. First-time starter PLAYFUL HUMOR, by Distorted Humor and a half-sister to $2.3 million earner MarshSide, has a decent-looking workout pattern.

Second Race

1. Gun Boat 2. Night Tide 3. Hodge

GUN BOAT was among the top 2-year-olds in Southern California last summer; this marks his first start since finishing fourth in the G1 Del Mar Futurity (a nose behind CreativeCause). The comeback workout pattern by GUN BOAT suggests he is ready to roll, first start back. He is trained by Bob Baffert, who also entered comebacker NIGHT TIDE. Thelatter won his debut last summer, finished third in the G3 Hollywood Juvenile, then was sidelined after misfiring third time out. His works are not as crisp as sharp as his stablemate, however. HODGE is back doing what he does best. That is, sprint. Off since January, he runs well fresh and worked a bullet five furlongs here one week ago in 58.60 seconds. Lookslike he is ready to fire.

Third Race

1. Deity 2. Hakuchi 3. Schiaparelli

If she can string together three good races, European import DEITY can wire the field. She set fast fractions and finished second both U.S. starts down the hill at this N1X level. Thespeed of the field, she is the one to catch. HAKUCHI, runner-up twice recently down the hill vs. $25k claimers, should get a good trip chasing the top pick. If the pacesetter folds,HAKUCHI will be among the first to attack. SCHIAPARELLI won her only start last summer at Hollywood Park, and certainly is bred for the hill. The gray filly was produced bymultiple downhill stakes winner Cambiocorsa. The knock on SCHIAPARELLI is that her maiden win was a slow-pace race, and she was a vet scratch March 30 from a race similarto this. She shows one published workout since.

Fourth Race

1. Meadow Road 2. Storming Kentucky 3. Afleet Cowboy

MEADOW ROAD finished a respectable second last out despite failing to produce his customary zip. Although loss of speed sometimes precludes a form decline, this restricted$25k claimer (non-winners of two) should be within reach. Trust him at a short price? Absolutely not. Golden Gate Fields-based STORMIN KENTUCKY arrives in Sol Cal aftergood races vs. Bay Area sophomore claimers. He has enough natural speed to establish position from the rail. AFLEET COWBOY pressed and tired in a two-turn turf race. Hereturns to the scene of his maiden win (Santa Anita dirt sprint). Kind of a weak race, actually.

Fifth Race

1. Van Brit 2. Halfapondarosa 3. Entabeni

Horse-for-course VAN BRIT (7 for 12 on Santa Anita turf) is the one to beat in the first leg of the closing-day, mandatory-payout pick six. VAN BRIT misfired last time as thefavorite, finishing fourth. But the race was validated when winner Charm the Crowd returned March 16 to win again in decisive style. VAN BRIT was freshened two months, she canfire off a break, and trainer Vladimir Cerin has had a big winter (16 for 72 into the weekend). HALFAPONDAROSA has been a main-track sprinter throughout her career, so twoturns on grass is a mystery. But she was sired by the good turf stallion More Than Ready, and tries the long game after a solid dirt sprint victory. She drew the inside post, and gets inlight with five-pound apprentice Eswan Flores aboard. ENTABENI is always close at or about this class level. She has three wins, five seconds, and 10 thirds from 32 starts.

Sixth Race

1. Turn On the Pumps 2. On Holy Ground 3. Sidepocket Kid

TURN ON THE PUMPS and ON HOLY GROUND drop to the maiden-20 bottom for the first time; both are qualified to win. TURN ON THE PUMPS stretches out and dropsfollowing a decent turf-sprint comeback against Calbred special-weight maidens that was his first start since July. The gelding will be on or near the lead in a race likely to unfold ata tepid pace. ON HOLY GROUND also has a prep-race comeback under his belt. He drops from special-weight open, to maiden-20, and can only improve vs. this softer crew. The11-start maiden SIDEPOCKET SUE finished in the money in five of his last six starts. He will get there eventually.

Seventh Race

1. Fire With Fire 2. Red Defense 3. Shediak

FIRE WITH FIRE ran super in his comeback last month, missing by a neck while racing for the first time since fall and first start since being gelded. He cuts back from nine furlongsto eight, posted three good works since raced, and can move up a ton second start back for trainer Neil Drysdale. RED DEFENSE goes long and drops from N3X to N2X/optionalclaiming. He has enough speed to be forwardly placed in a turf mile that came up short on speed. SHEDIAK looms the crazy upsetter, stretching out from a decent sprint. He has ahistory of outrunning his odds. BARNEY REBEL missed by a neck in his U.S. debut. Obvious contender.

Eighth Race

1. Warren's Rail Bird 2. Catquest 3. Bringon the Wain

Despite a slow start in his comeback, WARREN'S RAIL BIRD finished a promising second in his return from a a six-month layoff. The winner led gate-to-wire, 'RAIL BIRD ralliedand finished more than five lengths clear of next-out maiden winner Tough n Dangerous. CATQUEST broke slow in his debut, but finished third in a promising start to his career.Maidens trained by Brian Koriner typically improve with racing. BRINGON THE WAIN is the horse to catch. The class-drop speedster is racing for a claim tag for the first time. Heis quick enough to make the lead, and could be gone on the drop. First-time starter BIKE PATH has a series of sharp works for his debut.

Ninth Race

1. Bourbon Bay 2. Dhaamer 3. Eagle Poise

Santa Anita turf horse-for-course BOURBON BAY (6 for 8 here) won the San Juan in 2010, and tries for another win in the marathon even though a mile and three-quarters mightbe farther than he prefers. The Neil Drysdale trainee uncorked a huge late kick last time in the mile-and-one-half San Luis Rey to win by a head; the veteran gelding enters in topform against a field largely unproven at the graded stakes level. DHAAMER came out firing in his U.S. debut last month, missing by a neck in a mile and one-half G3 on dirt. He ranwell on turf in Europe, should have no trouble with the longer distance, gets a seven-pound weight break from the top choice, and has upside for two-time San Juan winning trainerMike Mitchell. He won this race in 2007 with On the Acorn, and in 2008 with Big Booster. EAGLE POISE is a long-distance marathon specialist whose best races have been onsurfaces other than turf. But he will stay the distance, and has a shot to upset if he handles the footing. HARRODS CREEK finished a head behind EAGLE POISE two starts back onsynthetic.

Tenth Race

1. Midnight Con 2. Dream Caught 3. Mr. Padre

Trouble-prone MIDNIGHT CON can win this maiden-30 as the curtain comes down on the winter meet. 'CON missed by less than a length last time despite trouble into the turn, andafter breaking from the rail. Now he moves outside, has the best numbers, and can finally wear them down in career start No. 10. DREAM CAUGHT figures as a main contendernow that he is back on "fast." His wet-track races are disappointing, but he finished second in his last three races on "fast." MR. PADRE has been freshened two months, and hasspeed. That's a wrap for Arcadia, racing resumes Thursday in Inglewood.
