THE AUTOGRAPHby ethel snyder

It is a rare experience tohave a friendly personal con-tact with any of the world'sluminaries entirely apart fromtheir profession. But is was mygood fortune to have had suchan experience and it is asfresh, vivid and exhilaratingnow as if it were a recenthappening instead of many yearsago.

A small group of us i s -landers from both Captiva andSanibel were enjoying a friendlychat on Mrs. Veronica Morey'sscreened porch in her beachcottage overlooking the Gulf ofMexico. Mr. and Mrs, AlbertSpalding were among the guests. The Spaldings had a capaciouselegant Captiva home which wassurrounded by considerableplantings in tropical trees, shrubs and flowers. There wasalso an orange and grapefruitgrove. There was no name atthe entrance to this estate andvery few realized that thefamous violinist had a winterhome in their midst.

Mr. Spalding had recentlybad an interesting and beauti-fully bound autogiography pub-lished by a well-'knownpublisher. One of the ladiespresent that day had bought acopy and longed to have it auto-graphed by the author. This ladytraveled with a son and familyin their travels all over theworld in the U.S. diplomaticservice from Washington. Shehad lived in many parts of theworld.

This friend cornered me be-hind the porch door, pushed thebook and a pen into my handswith an imploring look andwhisper and begged me ro askMr. Spalding to autograph herbook. She took me quite by sur-prise and I just could not r e -sist those eyes. So with thebook and the pen I drew nearthe famous violinisc. Mr. Spald-ing was a most modest and r e -tiring man, but friendly.

My chance came and in mymost polite manner I asked himif he would autograph his bookfor my friend. With disarmingalacrity and an engaging smilehe took the book and the penand retired to a table wherehe could comfortably write hisname and something else. Inever knew what else, I was sooverwhelmed.

Then, handing back to me thebook and the pen, he looked mesquarely in the eyes and said{everyone had gathered aroundand you could have beard theproverbial pin drop) "I knowwhat you are up to'**

"Up to?J> I replied in aston-ishment, "What am I up tol"

"You are trying to find outif I am literate}"

Thick silence. Then an out-burst of laughter in which heheartily joined. There wasnever any doubt thereafter aboutAlbert Spalding*s sense ofhumour!
