The birds did all kinds of tricks for the Florida Audubon Society to show their appreciation for thewonderful life saving ideas brought forth last week at the Casa Ybel Resort. More than 200 nature loversassembled in the spacious facilities to hear the latest on bird lore and conservation. Several field tourswere conducted into the island sanctuary retreats to glimpse the beauties which are here. We some timesneed to be reminded of these natural wonders which are now still plentiful but need guarding for future gen-erations and all time.

NOTICE TO POSTAL PATRONS

We would like to remind allof our Rural Route patrons thatduring the month of December, postal regulations require thatall greeting cards and letter mailplaced in your box for pick-up bythe rural carrier must have post-age affixed. Additional sortingbands for "Local" and "Out ofTown" bundles of mail are avail-able at the post office or fromyour carrier. „

We would also like to thankyou in advance for the cooperationwe know we will have, as we al-ways do, in making this a happyseason. It is the goal of the PostOffice Department to have allChristmas mail delivered byChristmas day and we can onlyaccomplish this with the coop-eration of all our patrons. ~~" "

The U. S. Christmas postagestamp is a partial reproduction"The Annunciation," a paintingby Jan van Eyck, the great 15thcentury Flemish artist who wascourt painter for Philip the Goodof Burgundy. The small van Eyckpainting was sold by a residentof Brussels to William n of theNetherlands in 1819. Czar Nich-olas of Russia acquired it in 1850.The USSR sold the picture to An-drew Mellon of Pittsburgh in 1937as part of a $6.5 million purchase.

The vertical stamp, printed infive colors, is now on sale and isprepared in 6-cent denominationonly. Christmas greeting cardswill require this amount of post-age whether or not they are seal-ed. As most cards will weighunder 1 oz., they should be seal-ed as this will indicate they areto be treated as First Class mail.Cards weighing between 1 and 2oz. should be left unsealed unlessadditional stamps are attached.Unsealed mail (Third Class) willneither be forwarded if unde-llverable at the first address, nor returned to the sender.

Cards for distant statesshould be mailed before Dec. 11,and those for delivery to nearbystates and local areas should bein die mail by Dec. 15.

The following d e a d l i n e s

should be observed to insureChristmas delivery for membersof the Armed Services overseas:Space Available Mail (SAM) byNov. 23 and Parcel Air Lift (PAL)by Nov. 30. Airmail by Dec. 11.Armed services overseas in-cludes dependents living at over-seas locations with servicemen, and civilian workers employedby the Government and assignedoverseas.

Domestic parcel post pack-ages should be mailed by Dec. 2for distant states and for closerplaces by Dec. 15.

Senders should place the nameof the sender and addressee aswell as a list of contents insideeach package as a precaution a-gainst possible loss.

Closure failures, broken tapeor torn wrappers at the inter-secion of flaps and openingsaccount for 48 percent of dam-aged and and rewrapped parcels.Torn wrappers usually occur be-cause the paper isn't strongenough* Wrapping paper shouldbe comparable to the strength andweight of grocery bags.

Crushed packages are the re-sult of insufficient cushioningmaterial. Fragile items such asglasses and ceramic objectsshould be individually cushionedwhich means that shredded paperor loose excelsior (or even popcorn) should be placed at leasttwo inches deep on all sides ofthe item.

Sturdy cartons should be usedand when Kraft tape is used thepackage should also be securelytied with cord or string.
