WILDERNESS SOCIETY MEETS
Immediately following the most successful closing of the FloridaAudubon's Conference on Sanibel, attended at times by over 200 partici-pants, another leading American organization in the same sphere ofactivities will convene on the island.
The Council of the Wilderness Society is meeting at the C as a YbelResort from Monday evening November 18 through Friday, November22 of this coming weeki The Council is the governing board of the Wilder-ness Society, the national Conservation organization particularly con-
cerned with the preservation of America's wilderness. Many Floridianswire members.
The Wilderness Society is actively involved in such Florida projectsas applying the Wilderness Act to the Everglades National Park and tothe dozen National Wildlife Refuges that lie in Florida. Successful actionwill assure that these publicly owned areas permanently retain theirdominantly natural character, despite all the increasing pressures to

put everything from TV towers to super highways to oil and mining rigsin, on, and through them. These projects are typical of the basic con-servation battle going on all over Florida today*—a battle to assure theconservation of Florida's extraordinary natural environment for man'suse and enjoyment.
The Wilderness Society Council on Thursday, November 14 begana four-day field trip during which it will examine, under the guidanceof informed Floridians, such significant natural areas as the Key Deerand Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuges along the Florida Keys, the new Biscayne National Monument, John Pennycamp Coral Reefs,Everglades National Park, the Ten Thousand Islands, Corkscrew Swamp, and Sanibel's Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge.
On Tuesday, November 19 at the Casa Ybel Resort the Council willmeet with state officials and prominent Florida conservationists to learnat firsthand more about various Florida natural resource problems.
Sigurd F. Olson of Ely, Minnesota, a nationally famous ecologist, author, and natural resources consultant to government agencies andprivate organizations, is the President of the Wilderness Society.Stewart M. Brandborg, originally of Montana and now of Washington,D.C., is the Executive Director. In addition to the fifteen Council mem-bers, the party includes four members of the professional staff and thewives of several of the Councilors and staff.
ATTENTION ADVERTISERS!!!!Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, the ISLANDER will be delivered
on Wednesday, Nov. 27, this coming week. This, of course, plays havocwith our regular deadline, so we will be attempting to pick up advertisingcopy today (Thursday) and tomorrow.
Since this is a bad year, paper-wise, for holiday schedules, ourChristmas edition will be coming out in four weeks on Dec. 19, so don'tbe too surprised if someone carrying a Christmas book pops in to seeyou starting next week.
And while we're on the subject of papers and such, we would verymuch like to obtain, by fair means or foul, a reporter for Sanibel anda reporter for Captiva. While we are greatly indebted to all the wonder-ful people who have helped us by submitting news items and personals(and we hope they keep it up) we really do heed someone on the Islandswho could devote a couple of days a week to the process of news gather-ing. You don't have to be able to write; just to spell. If you, or anyoneyou know, is interested, call MO 4-6792.

The birds did all kinds of tricks for the Florida Audubon Society to show their appreciation for thewonderful life saving ideas brought forth last week at the Casa Ybel Resort. More than 200 nature loversassembled in the spacious facilities to hear the latest on bird lore and conservation. Several field tourswere conducted into the island sanctuary retreats to glimpse the beauties which are here. We some timesneed to be reminded of these natural wonders which are now still plentiful but need guarding for future gen-erations and all time.
