SANIBEL-CAPTIVA PLAN
DELAYED BY COUNTYThe approval of a comprehensive Sanibel-Captiva program was stalled Monday
at the first formal meeting of the Lee County Planning Commission. The planners, meeting jointly with the county commission, voted to bracket
Sanibel-Captiva with 11 other county districts for presentation as part of the overallLoo program, due in August.
The Island's plan was the result of 18 months of study by a special committee. It was put in with the other districts after County Commissioner Dick Sayers
recommended its .rejection as a separate action. The 7-2 planning commission vote against acceptance of the plan after Sayers
said: " "I realize a lot of t ime a nd effort have been expended to produce the master planfor Sanibel-Captiva. However. I think it would be unwise to consider it ahead of thecounty wide plan and separately from the county wide plan.
James Fortiner, a real estate dealer and planning commissioner, warned thatindividual adoption of theSanibel-Captiva proposal "could create a hodge-podge" andit might "'prove unfair toother sections of the county."
Vernon McKenzie said: "The people of the islands were led to believe the planwould be approved, and would consider it a breach of faith if it was rejected. The planis more advanced than other areas and could beused as a guideline."
Listed as goals and objectives of the plan are to:- Retain the South Sea island atmosphere at the Sanibel-Captiva planning area.- Provide lor a low population density on theislands.- Maintain a significant amount of recreation area and open space.- Improve the transportation network by developing a new major thoroughfare
parallel to Periwinkle Way, completing Gulf Dirve by connecting the present pavedstretches of the road and upgrading critical intersections on both islands.
- Expand the central water system and to provide adequate sewage treatment inthe future.
- Prohibit destruction of vegetation, particularly red mangroves in landdevelopment.
- Promote additional public acquisition of land adjacent to the Ding DarlingWildlife Refuge.
- Encourage development of public park land adjacent to the Sanibel Is'andbeaches.
- Minimize the potential flood damage on the islands by encouraging proper stylesof d evelopment in proper locations.
- Provide adequate commercial development located in such a manner as toensure convenience, accessibility and a minimum of travel on the area's majorthoroughfares.

Fifteen minutes ago a man rang ourdoorbell. "Do you own a white cat'.'" heasked. "No." we answered. "Well." hesaid unhappily, "I just ran over aIjeautiful little white cat, and it's in badshape. I can't find out who owns it.""Well call Wildlife Rescue , " wesuggested. Then the man left.
We dialed the number listed in theIslander advertisement. 472-2247, and injust five minutes, while we stood at theside of the road, anxiously watching thestricken cat. the Wildlife Rescue vehicle,a large red van, rolled up.
They carefully covered the cat with ablanket, talked to it soothingly and liftedit up into the van. Then they drove away, promising to do what they could.
The sun was sinking as the rescueteam lift, and we felt that perhaps bytheir timely effort, the sun might not besinking on the life of the cat.

REALTOR NEWSby Betty Davis
Young people, or older peoplehawho have rented housing all of theirlives, sometimes would like to own realestate, but know little about the processof acquiring it. Most of us remember thethings we are interested in. If deeds, eminent domain, easements, zoning andtaxes came up in school when weweren't interested, the facts could getfuzzy after test papers were turned in.
The most common method ofacquiring property is by purchasing it*from an owner or through his agent. Two types of agents are licensedspecifically to represent owners orbuyers of real estate. These are realestate brokers and real estate salesmen.A salesman must always work for abroker, the broker being responsible forhis salesman's actions.
Licenses are issued by the stateafter the candidate has passed onexamination. In Florida, real estatesalesmen are required to have aminimum One year experience beforebecoming eligible to take the broker'sexamination.
The term Realtor is a registeredservice mark which may be used only bya broker who is a member of the localreal estate board and of the NationalAssociation of Real Estate Boards, bothvoluntary organizations.
An agent may also be a licensedattorney.
An offer of purchase is mostcommonly made through use of adocument known as a deposit receipt(Contract). This contains all the termsand conditions of the purchase of theproperty.
When the offer to purchase hasbeen accepted and the buyer and sellerhave both agreed on terms and havesigned the deposit receipt, a deed mustbe signed and acknowledged by theseller and delivered to the buyer andrecorded at the office of the countyofficial who keeps such records.
Details of searching records to besure the grantor has the right to sell aredone by a title insurance company. When satisfied that the property can besold, the title company issues aninsurance policy protecting the newbuyer against loss because of any cloudon the title that later may come to light
Details of drawing up the deed, recording, financial arrangements andsimilar routine are handled by an escrowcompany.
They have the advantage of being adisinterested third party, holding thetransaction in suspension untir theymake sure all legal requirements aremet. After you are an owner, youshould be aware that there are certainpublic rights that apply to yourproperty. There is the right to tax, toacquire your property for public utethrough eminent domain, as is done forfreeway rights-of-way. Police powermay affect your property, as will theright of the state to promote health andthe general welfare.
There may be easements that gowith the property. This is a rightgranted by a previous owner to put autility line, for instance, over the backof your lot. There is the right ofescheat, which means that if there arenot legal heirs to your property, itreverts to the government.
There may be a covenant applyingto the property, either one you agreedto on buying, or one you may imposeon selling. A covenant is an agreementthat the property will not be used forcertain purposes.
The most common right is that ofsomeone loaning money to you forbuying the property to sell it if youdefault. Such mortgage rights are knownas liens. Liens may also be against theproperty for unpaid taxes or to satisfyjudgements by the court.
Zoning restrictions are a specialkind of public right, dictating to whatuse the property may be put. Zoningrestrictions are decided by a zoningboard and when they are changed arealways subject to public hearing. You
\ can also apply for % variance, which: means you want to - put It to a use not
allowed under th£ zoning then in effect.Interpreting the factors that apply
to a particular real estate property is thebusiness, of a Realtor or other real estatebroker. Besides having a day-to-dayknowledge of property price trends, hecan also guide the buyer and sellerthrough the steps necessary intransferring ownership.

(iHOST CARS MAY BE CLEAREDAWAY
A pair of wrens hopped from thediapidated back seat of the old car ontothe jagged glass of a once-window.
Just as quickly they skittered awayfrom the car, abandoned for years on aside road in Sanibel. There are more than150 of these metal hulls scattered aboutthe island, useless and rusting, but undera plan initiated by Dick Workman of theSanibel-Captiva Conservation Foun-dation they all may be cleared away.
A Fort Myers junk dealer has agreedlo crush and tow away all the cars free ifenough cars can be located.
That's Workman's problem.Locating all the vehicles strewn aboutthe marshes on both public and privateland.
More than 150 have been found on theisland already, many just a few steps offPeriwinkle Way, and as many as 50 on 60have been discovered piled in brokenheaps in the midst of the Ding DarlingWildlife Refuge.
"A lot of the cars accumulated in theSanctuary before it became public land,"Workman said. "To dispose of anythingon the island, especially with a toll road, costs a great deal of money.
"It has been a tradition to dispose ofunwanted wastes on backroads when noone is looking," he said.
He said this program could improvethe appearance of the island without anyexpense.
"To make this economically feasiblewe have to get great numbers," Work-man said. "If we get all but 20 cars thenwe would have to pay to get them takenaway. It's pretty important to get themall now."
Permission must be given forvehicles to be towed from private landand Workman said he hopes anyonewanting a car disposed of will call him atthe Conservation office.

10 • ISLANDER 6-21-73TO THE ISLANDER:
Well, here I am again. This time, writing in reference to the Friday earlyevening news, June 8, channel 11. Ahumanitarian, Shirley Walter, wasgetting her hands slapped because oftrying to save the lives of birds that wereinjured by the progress going on, onSanibel Island, or because they weresick.
The issue seems to be that there werecomplaints about her having such aCARE CENTER on her premises, whichis zoned residential and therefore, doesnot allow her to maintain such anoperation. It seems that no one knowswhat to label her efforts under. How toclassify it. Whether it is a zoo orveterinary hospital, because there hasnever been such a place for such a need, anywhere in Lee County. Since no onecan decide what it should come under, why not call it what it obviously is? ABIRD AND NATURE CARE CENTER!A wildlife Care Center! This woman isnot operating it for profit! She is actingout a humanitarian feeling and love ofthe island! Isn't that also what SanibelIsland is anyway? A wildlife and birdsanctuary? isn't that what the DingDarling Reserve is? Shouldn't thisCenter be therefore labeled under theFederal Game and Wildlife Reserve?
If she has a neighborhood problemabout the animals, why did they move tothe island in the first place? Her yard, Inoticed in the TV interview was nicelyfenced in and the yard looked im-maculate and the animals looked wellcared for and happy. If it was neighborswho made the complaint, why didn 't theyhave the decency to approach herdirectly, to talk to her about it and try towork something out with her, for thewelfare of these birds and removal to abetter place, if they found theirresidency, on her property, so offensive. That would have been a better neighborthan to go running to City Hall, causing alot of trouble.
If her yard was strewn with garbage, would they have complained? If it wassome one who made a complaint, whyaren't they directing their efforts to
make complaints about the pigs whocome here to the island and litter it withall their garbage, as I wrote about in myprevious letter to you.
If such people have such energy to goaround complaining about helpinghelpless animals, think what all theirenergy and efforts might accomplish ifthey turned it to more pertinent matterson the island, such as maintaining theisland and seeing to it that visitors do too.
Another thing, I've read in theIslander that our pier was built with thehelp of private donations. This surprisedme very much because my thought wasthat a federal grant was made for thebuilding of a new pier. A federal grant, Ibelieve, was made for the repair andbuilding of Fort Myers Beach pier. IsSanibel Island the step-child? What andwhere does all the funds go to that iscollected on the causeway bridge? Threequarters of it should be returned to theisland, for maintenance of the island. Ifsomeof those funds were appropriated tothe island, it would help to build an ap-propriate place on appropriate property, for the care of injured and sick wildlife onthe island, among other needs of theisland.
If this is deemed a wildlife sanc-tuary, which I recall reading in manypopular books and magazines, that itwas, and is, then why shouldn't there be acenter to care for the wildlife here? Whatcould be more appropriate for the island?
My hat is off to Shirley Walter for herefforts, interest, and love of the islandand it's original inhabitants. The wildlife. It is always outsiders and progress thatdestroys the beauty of such a place asSanibel. If people don't like wildlife, natural tropical plant life, the sea andeverything else that Sanibel has, orrather had, to offer, then why do theybother to come and move here. Theydon't need Sanibel. They need themainland. City life. Asphalt jungle life.
Perhaps the best thing for Sanibelwould have been to have kept the ferryboat and never to have built thecauseway bridge at all. Sanibel is one ofthe very few natural reserves left, thatare very fast disappearing. Soon all these

people who don't appreciate nature willbe very happy, because there won't beanymore of nature, in its wild andnatural state, around anymore. Thenthey will have to find something else togripeabout. Maybe then they can start incomplaining about man-made effortsthat they suddenly disapprove of and thatthey should have complained about a lotsooner, in the first place, where their
complaining efforts would have donemore good than directing it towardsinnocent and helpless animals.
Again I say, "Only God can make atree." But when are people going torealize it enough to appreciate it. Andwhy must the people who try to do goodalways the ones chastized and dprived oftheir rights!

OUR PLANS SUIT YOUR PLANS FOR AN ISLAND HOME
A well planned cluster of comfortable and elegant baysidehomes, Mariner Pointe Condominium exemplifies foresightand concern in blending development with the naturalisland environment. Good planning means clustered homeswith individual privacy. Because of good planning eachMariner Pointe apartment has an unrestricted view of the
open bay — the latest brand name fixtures anover-sized screen porches, wide-open livable frustic island architecture — these are all prodisight and good planning. But, the best part oiproviding you with a small part of the most pon Florida's Gulf Coast.
A Grain Of Sea Saltby betzi abram
How'd you like to take a fast spinaround the island in that shiny, yellowpowerboat with the 350 hp Chevroletengine? Man, can that go! You would?Well, first you better meet the man at thewheel — what should you call him, pilot?Captain? Officer Shulte? Because he'sthe Lee County Sheriff's Marine Patrol ina sharp, green uniform*, with plenty ofofficial insignia on that 23' long Thun-derbird Formula boat.
He smiles and gives you a hugehelping hand aboard, "Just call meDick." He's a big, easy-going man withfreckles on his nose and red hair who justlooks like he comes from some placecalled Auburn, Iowa, and learned, aboutthe time he could walk, to run a boat onthe Racoon River which he does and did.For all his warm grin, he seems a bit onthe serious side, perhaps because he is soaware of the water and its hazards andbecause he conceives of his job evenmore as a "protector of persons" than asan enforcer of laws, although, of course,he is both. He patrols the waters of LeeCounty, but particularly those around theBeach, every weekend and holiday, watching for reckless boating, negligence on the water, overcrowding ofboats and other dangerous practices. Hehas undoubtedly saved many personsfrom the consequences of their own orother people's folly.
There! Look at that 16' run-abouttearing under the bridge as if the devilwere after it. Spray flying, motor roaringand wake churning! If another boat hadbeen pulling out of San Carlos Marina, nomatter how slowly or carefully, it wouldhave undoubtedly been creamed. Dicksnaps to instant attention, eases forwardon the throttle and the big, yellow boatzooms forward as if the rest of the worldis standing still. He hails the run-aboutwhich slows up, stops and three anxiousfaces turn this way. "Hi. there," says
Dick with a slow, pleasant smile, HISrelaxed manner has its effect and thethree men look more sheepish thanalarmed. After he checks the driver'slicense, the boat registration and givesthem a calm and friendly admonishmentconcerning the dangers of speedingthrough the bridge, he lets them off witha written warning rather than a ticket.Their relief is visible as they chug away, all smiles, at a more sensible pace.
Dick was in charge of the SafetyPatrol for 8 years in Miami, supervisingabout 35 races a year including theurange Bowl Regattas. He's only tooaware of what boats can do to people, buthis pet peeve is people who buy high-powered boats for their kids and then justturn them loose on the water. He doesn'tthink much of letting kids ride up on thebow of the boat either, having seen whata whirling propeller cna do to someonewho's fallen overboard.
The most common infractions, however, are boats going too close toswimmers or whizzing past docks andmoored boats with too much wake. Somany boaters seem incredibly unawareof the rules of the road or evenelementary good seamanship. Dick, andmany other concerned persons, wish thatit were a law that every boat owner ordriver had to take the Coast Guard orPower Squadron course in safe boating.
Dick doesn't only look after thesafety of boaters, however. He keeps aneye out for swimmers who venture indangerous places, like a rip tide, or whopaddle too far offshore on their inflatedtires and rubber rafts. He rescued onelady last season who had floaated ;!4 mileoffshore. She was sleeping soundly, headed for Mexico aided by current andwind. Since she could not swim a stroke,it was fortunate that her raft had notsprung a slow leak as many of them do.Another time he rescued an 18' boat
which had broken down. There were tenpeople aboard, five of whom werechildren, no life preservers and theowner, who had just bought the boat, hadnever run one before and had no idea ofwhat was wrong or how to fix it.Butenough of the horrible examples.
As you whip across the Gulf to theend of Sanibel, the wind whistling in yourears and the engine purring softly, youlook enviously at Dick who is obviouslyenjoying himself. You ask how he gotsuch a great job and he laughs again. "Iwas a friend of Snag's and he needed
6-21-73 ISLANDER 11someone so he asked me to do it for afavor. Then when Wanicka was elected,he asked me to stay on. so I did. They'reboth fine men, and I like the chance tohelp out."
Indeed, he must like it because hehas a thriving business-of his own duringthe week, Custom Kar Tops, located justoff the South Tamiami Trail. Hisschedule doesn't leave him much timefor loafing around, but there are somemen who just don't know when to quit. Heeven taught his wife to run a boat and allI can say is "more power to 'em both."

SONG OF THE SEAGulf Dr
SUCCESSMARRIAGEbyProfessor
J.DEAR PROFESSOR WILLIAMS:
My wife and I seem to be quite happy andcompatible. We've been married tenyears. However. I would like to be madeaware of certain "signs" which can in-dicate a marriage could be heading fortrouble. Could you help meonthis?
PROFESSOR WILLIAMS: This is avery good question. Yes, I can give yousome help. The following points canindicate a marr iage could be heading fortrouble:
1) One of the spouses pays less andless attention to the other in showingconsideration, love, affection, andrespect.
2) Arguments are increasing innumbers and intensity.
3) Lack of communication on thepart of one or both in discussing familyproblems or other situations that candirectly or indirectly affect the family.
4) Sexual indifference or evencoldness.
5) One or both spouses never wantingto do anything or go anywhere together.
Oi Excluding the other spouse moreand more from one's activities and in-terests.
7) Developing new friends who maynot be accep ta ble to the spouse.
8) Inc reas ing evidence of un-truthfulness. lack of compassion, possible unfaithfulness, and general lackof regard on the part of one or bothspouses.
Any one or two or even three of theabove points does not necessarily meanthe marriage is in trouble; however, more than this could spell trouble. Tomake a home a desirable place willrequire much patience and un-derstanding. But, if this is done con-sistently and with perserverance. it canbe successful.
DEAR PROFESSOR WILLIAMS:How important is home life in thedevelopment of a child's personality. Myhusband and I have heard that the homeis the key to one's mental and physicaldevelopment. Would you comment?
PROFESSOR WILLIAMS: Ac-cording to the latest knowledge insocialogy, the kind of early home en-vironment is the very basis for thedevelopment of personality. The type ofpersonality traits one has is a directreflection of the kind of early emotionalinteraction he has had within his familygroup. Whether one is dependent or in-dependent, self .centered or other-centered, introvertive or extrovertive, and optomistic or pessimistic, dependsupon the way he was treated or perceivedthis treatment in his early childhood. It isthought that one's personality is formedbythetime he enters kindergarten and isnot subject to any great modification.Thechanges in personality often referredlo are really changes in social attitude, not personality.
Parents should provide a home at-mosphere for their children free fromarguments and other behavior that canbecome upsetting. Love and affectionshould be daily occurrences and thechildren should know, althoughdisciplined from time to time, that theyare accepted and very much desired inthe family group.

DINGS THINGS
Just as the Ding Darling Refuge provides protection and habitat for fourteencreatureson the list of endangered and threatened wildlife, so do many other areas inthe nation. The U.S. Dept. of Interior, through the National Wildlife Refuges andNational Parks, has devoted its energies to the preservation of species facingdecimation. These efforts have taken the form of monies expended, lands purchased, research financed, and environmental awareness programs. In 1966, a specialprogram was initiated in the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife for investigationof and research for endangered species. This endeavor was the Patuxent WildlifeResearch Center and its goals are twofold: to learn to propagate certain animals incaptivity, and to seek factors which threaten certain species. These goals have led toexperiments with many of the 35 endangered species on wildlife refuges. (Note:"endangered" refers to species which are so threatened as to need assistance if theyare to escape extinction. All told, there are 100 such endangered animals in the UnitedStates. Other categories such as "peripheral" and "status undetermined" includemany more species.)
However, in addition to the increasing emphasis on endangered species protec-tion, the refuge system also recognizes its responsibilities to other forms of wildlife. The many species of waterfowl known to U.S. hunters have definitely influenced therefuge system. Migration routes and the rigors encoun tered along such have oftendetermined the location of a refuge, in a pot-hole area of the northwest, in a swamp onthe Atlantic coast, or even, as at Ding Darling, at the end of a flyway where winterfood and cover are abundant. These refuges involved in migratory waterfowlmanagement give the birdsa series of "stepping stones" to aid them in their travels.
Bighorn sheep, bison, longhorn cattle, avocets, geese, pelicans, ferrets, eagles, alligators, whooping cranes, teal, mallards, canvasbacks - each of these species andothers have their requirements considered in management plans on refuges theyfrequent. Each is important, no more or less so than any other.

THIS WEEK AT THE SANIBEL LIBRARYby Hal H. Harrison
(Note: This week's guest columnist is Mary Margaret (Mrs. Walter) Emmons, who is Sanibel's librarian).
The majority of requests made by Sanibel Library patrons are for titles on thebest seller list, the lastest book by a favorite author, or information about birds, plants and shells to be found on our island. These are the exciting interests of today. But how long since you renewed acquaintance with some old book friends who sitquietly on our shelves? Summer is a wonderful time for this. One section of the libraryhasavery good paperback collection youwouldenjoy---the classics.
Mark Twain said he wrote without motive, moral or a plot in the "Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn" but Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are immortal on the Mississippi.
"Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights" may make much better reading on asummer day (nan many of the new Gothic novels because of their authenticity.Another old love story to be enjoyed is "Pride and Prejudice."
Remember Natty Bumpo and Hawkeye? Our pictures of the North Americanfrontier were formed by James Fenimore Cooper's "The Pathfinder," "The Deer-slayer," and "The Last of the Mohicans."
You might again follow the careers of David Copperfield; Oliver Twist; andPhilip Trip of "Great Expectations" through their great difficulties. Dickens alwaysbrings you to a happy conclusion.
Rudyard Kipling takes you back to the India of British Imperialism in his story of"Kim," a young English boy raised as an Indian, subjected to racial, religious andnational prejudice. Kipling is equally interesting as he tells the tale of "CaptainCourageous," a book inspired by his stay in America and time spent with Gloucesterfishermen.
Another good yarn of thesea is Conrad's "Lord Jim." And then there is that greatclassic, "Two Years Before the Mast" by RichardHenry Dana.
The "Three Musketeers" and "The Comte de Monte Cristo" are French historytoldbyDuman' swashbuckling heroes, Dantesandd'Artagan.
Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'urbervilles" and Bathsheba of "Far From theMadding Crowd" were considered very indiscreet and immoral by his Victorianaudience.
One little paperback contains Henrik Ibsen's four major plays: "A Dell's House,""The Wild Duck," "HeddaGabler" and "The Master Builder," some of the first playsto give us real people in real situations.
If you are in a serious frame of mind read "Crime and Punishment."Destoyevokys anticipated many of the psychological problems we face today.
In a more youthful mood, read and love again "Heidi" and "Rebecca of Sun-nybrook Farm." Good summer reading, all in paperbacks on the library shelves.

A Grain Of Sea Saltby betzi abram
Picture a guy, lean almost skinny, deeply tanned with clear, light blue eyesand a full head of hair, crew cut so shortit must have been measured inthousandths of a millimeter, who lookslike a healthy 55 year old in tip-topcondition but says he's 72. A guy who isa bachelor but has 24 grandchildren;who graduated from Princeton andstudied architecture in Europe, butmade his career in N.Y. advertising; whohas skinned elbows and scratches on hisknees like a 10-year-old boy, but whohas a salty and sophisticated sense ofhumor. If you can, you'll get aglimmering of the complexity andfascination of Harry Strong, a fellowwho just sailed his 40' steel ketch fromPalma de Majorca across the AtlanticOcean via the Canary Islands andAntigua to the Virgin Islands and thencein a meandering course to Fort MyersBeach. Hs boat, bought in Holland, isnamed the Nina, after Columbus'famous ship, draws 5' and has a 13'+beam. The Nina has no automaticequipment aboard and,, in fact, Harryexpressed considerable disdain for that"junk" which he thinks is more troublethan it's worth. "I was raised in the daysof the sail,'"he says emphasizing the lastword, "and that's what I do — sail! Youjust let your mains'l fill nicely and thenfiddle with the jib and the mizzen untilthe boat swings gently from port tostarboard and back, then you tie thetiller down and the boat will sail byitself."
His Atlantic trip was a sheerpleasure cruise. When asked if therewere any emergencies or crises, hesnorts. "I have NEVER lost a mast orbusted a cable ANYWHERE. You see alot of battered boats and you hear thesewild stories, but it's not necessary. Inever lost a mast because I don't keepenough sail up to bust it. When you seea storm coming you reef in or take yoursails down, put out a sea anchor andride it out." When asked about reefs, hegrins, "Never go near 'em. If you keepfar enough away, you can't run into'em. I wouldn't think of sailing aroundin those Bahamas. They're just anotherbunch of islands and they have too
many reefs". His favorite island isMajorca, though he has called manyplaces home, from Dallas, Texas, toKotzebue, Alaska.
To make his ocean voyage heenlisted three German boys on Majorcawhere he has lived since his retirment in1956. They stood 8 hour watches, got afull night's sleep every night, headedinto the wind every day at noon with asea anchor out and went for a swim(leaving one man aboard on watch.)After a hearty meal, they could set sailagain in the afternoon. He's nowlooking about for new companions onthe trip home, but first he is planningon sailing up to Gloucester, Maine, where he spent his boyhood summersand where some of his family stillreside.
Apparently he did not particularlychoose to visit Fort Myers Beach, butjust put in here at Mid Island Marina tohave his boat bottom scraped, havingbeen at sea since 1968 when he leftParma. Then he made his way up toHap's welding shop, next to Erickson &Green in the back bay, to have someminor repairs and to have his"windows" welded in. (That's what hecalled them. Obviously he doesn't carewhether he sounds "properly" nautical, just so you know what he means!)
While here he picked up a 1945diesel Hercules motor which has been astand-by motor in a Fort Myers shop for40 years. "Of course, it's an inboard,"he answers a question emphatically."What dja expect? I wouldn't HAVEone of those outboard things. You get afollowing sea, one wave comes over anddrowns them out and you've had it. Ijust laugh when I see those littlestinkpots!" As for the Hercules, "It justpurrs," he states with the kind of prideknown only by people who understandwhat it is like to be a 40-year-old motor. But age doesn't bother him. "I don'tcare how old I am," he says firmly. "Iam what I am, and as long as I can dowhat I want to do, it's OK." And if Iever saw anyone who was doing whatthey wanted to do, it is Harold L.Strong, sailor, of Maine and Majorca.
