The EditorTo The Islander:

I noted with great interest and pridethe cleaning up planned by the I s l a n dImprovement Committee for May 9. Itis wonderful to read of citizens gettingout and doing things for themselves.

Another way to help keep the Islandclean and preserve the unspoiled appear-ance is to vigorously control all aboveground utilities or even a system of un-derground utilities., Unfortunately, fartoo many of us take utility poles forgranted even when they run down bothsides of the street and clutter the viewof open blue skies with wires. It is im-portant that we establish standards andcontrols now before the privileges grant-ed to the utilities of today become theirrights and perogatives tomorrow.

Let us exert our right to clean skies./ s / William W. Buckley

To The Islander:A copy of the following letter was

sent to the Islander for publication:Dear Members of the Sanibel-Captiva

Conservation Foundation:Thank you very much for providing

me the use of your boat and gas for myscience project. This helped me verymuch and improved the quality of myresearch.

At the State Science Fair, I receiveda second place in Senior High Botany andwas named an alternate for the Inter-national Fair in Baltimore. This is con-sidered runner-up for the grand prizeand is one of the highest awards at theFair.

Thank you again for all your help./ s / Ty Symroski

To The Islander:We arrived on Sanibel Island f ive

weeks ago, and love it. Our mother andalmost everyone else thinks we a r ebeautiful .for we wear the handsomestfur coats, in shades of blonde mink,Russian sable, and gray and black clip-ped-seal sort-of, Our manners are verygood and we have handsome tails andwhiskers setting off our deep blue bigeyes.

It should be noted also, that Mamma"Lily Pons" (so called because she canhold a "mew" for thirty seconds) is mostunusual and has taken such good care ofus, we will be an asset to any home forthat's what we need now. Our routine willbe catching mice and horrors- ra ts -when-we-are bigger, eating, sleeping, playing push-over and swat but most ofall making you happy because you havetaken us in when both our father andgrandfather have run away. (Our grand-mother is a wretch too.) But we are de-termined to be good because we will beso grateful to you.

P.S. We will receive callers by appoint-ment in Pirate Alley, GR 2-3943.

The following amusing v e r s e waspassed on by Ann Landers in a recentcolumn. In the event you missed it, I toopass it on as worth repeating.

REMEMBER WHENRemember when hippie meant big in the

hips,And a trip involved travel in cars, planes

or ships? When pot was a vessel for cooking things

in,And hooked was what grandmothers rug

may have been? When fix was a verb that meant mend

or repair,And Be-in meant merely existing some-

where? When neat meant well organized, tidy

and clean,And grass was a ground cover, normally

green?When groovy meant furrowed with

channels and hollows,And birds were winged creatures, like

robins and swallows? When fuzz was a substance real fluffy

like lint,And bread came from bakeries and not

from the mint? When roll meant a bun and rock was a

Large lot on lovely fresh waterlagoon. Close to golf course andshopping. Nice trees. Good fishing.Very attractive area. Moderateprice.

Very attractive 4 unit garden apart-ment. Excellent condition with allfurnishings. Ready to rent. Veryconvenient to Beach. Reasonablypriced.

stone,And hang-up was something you did with

a phone? It's groovy, man, groovy, but English

it's not,Methinks that our language is going to

pot.Author Unknown.

If you have reached the age where youfind our changing language confusingyoucan bring yourself up-to-date by quest-ioning any teenager.

If oldsters will take the trouble ofthinking back to the language of theiryouth they will find that they contributedtheir share of similar expressions thatseem as ridiculous to the youngster oftoday as their language may seem to us.

As time marches on, these youngstersof today will soon find themselves at theage of thirty or more and I venture to saythey will find the language of their teen-agers as difficult to grasp, for this is afast moving world and if you fail to keepup with it you will certainly be caught inthe undertow.

When I was a youngster a hippie wasa broad, a cigarette was a coffin-nail,oldsters were foggies, an attractive girlwas a doll or a chick, a policeman a cop, jigger was a look-out, gasbay a politician,water-wagon something that drunks usedto climb on when they wanted to kick thehabit, sap or dumb-cluck a guy who didn'tknow which end was up, a car was a gas-buggy, a tramp was a hobo and a singer acaniry.

We had hang-ups in those days but weseldom resorted to violence. We didn'tthrow stones, railroad spikes, or smashwindows of innocent merchants, set firesor attempt to destroy the world we livedin.

We had respect for our elders, for thelaw and for our parents. We understoodthat the world was our oyster and it wasup to us to open it. We were proud of ourcountry and respected the flag that repre-sented it.

THE ISLAND GARDENERGardenia bud drop can be a real

problem with the homeowner, accordingto the Florida Nurserymen and GrowersAssociation (FNGA). This problem isbrought about by a number of discrep-ancies in the culture of the plant: quiteoften the plan is fertilized when it is infull bud; the plant may be iron deficient;it may have a serious infestation of rootknot; there can be many of the branchesencrusted with scale; fungus in the baseof the bud; or heavy aphid feeding onthe plant, Bud drop can also be en-countered when there is an excessiveamount of moisture such as heavy rainsor over watering. Often a specific causefor bud drop cannot be analyzed. You willneed to experiment and delete one prob-lem from the other.

It is not unusual to have a shoot fromthe understock of gardenias grow upthrough the grafted top. The understockis Gardenia Thunbergia. The leaves arecrinkled, more narrow than the graftedgardenia, and it is quite vigorous in itsgrowth. Gardenia Thunbergias will pro-duce blossoms, but they are single andnot double like the grafted specimens. If you have enough room you can havegardenias blooming over a longperiodoftime. Some plants are dwarf, others areextremely large. These bushes can beshaped by pruning judiciously. Prune onlyafter the plant has blossomed. Remem-ber, gardenias are quite often deficientin iron and manganese. These two mat-erials should be applied at least once ayear, more often on sweet soil.

If you like a sweet fragrance at night, then you will enjoy the Night BloomingJasmine. Most of the jasmine plantsgrowing in Florida have some fragrance, but the Night Blooming Jasmine producesa heavy scent early in the evening andby morning time there is little fragranceleft. Night Blooming Jasmine is subjectto a worm that feeds specifically on it.This worm can be controlled by re-peated applications of sevin.

Chrysanthemums are producing somegrowth and whether you live in north, central, or south Florida you should be-gin spraying for the control of fungus onthese plants. The fungus is called Sep-toria and it causes a browning of theleaves. If the fungus progresses fromthe stem of the plant onto the leavesyou will have no leaves left by the bloom-ing season. Repeated applications ofzineb or maneb or Dithane M-45 willgive your plants a full leaf development.

What this country needs in this area of discontent, discord, protest and pillage aremore rugged individualists. In my file I have a copy of a speech made by Senator Carl-son some time ago which explains what I mean:

"Men who are honest, sound from center to circumference, true to the h e a r t ' score."

"Men who are not for sale.""Men who will stand for the right if the heavens totter and the earth reels.""Men with consciences as steady as the needle to the poles.""Men who can tell the truth and look the world right in the eye.""Men who neither brag nor run."'Men who neither flag nor flinch."'Men who can have courage without shouting it."•Men in whom the courage of everlasting life runs still, deep and strong."'Men who know their message and tell it."'Men who know their place and fill it."•Men who know their business and attend to it."

"Men who will not lie, shirk, or dodge.""Men who are not too lazy to work, nor too proud to be poor.""Men who are willing to eat what they have earned and wear what they have paid

for.""Men who are not ashamed to say 'no' with emphasis and who are not ashamed to

say "I can't afford it."The tides or change and criticism have left our nation without mooring or anchors.

We are being tossed about in the sea of doubt and uncertainty that is about to sink theship of God before our very eyes.

It is time we as individuals faced up to the facts and began to act like proud Ameri-cans, not as conformists and critics.
