July is UV Safety Awareness Month! UV rays are emitted from the sun and are a form of radiation. The two main rays that are of concern from sunlight are classified as UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are on a short wavelength, and can reach the outer layer of your skin, while UVAs feature longer wavelengths and can reach the middle layer of your skin, notes the Department of Health & Hu-man Services. Not protecting yourself from these rays can lead to a number of issues for your skin beyond just sunburn, including premature aging, skin cancer and suppression of your immune system. In addition to damaging your skin, these rays can really do a number on your eyes as well. Too much exposure to UV rays in your eyes can cause vision problems and damage parts of your eye. That’s why it’s so important to protect yourself from these harmful rays.

Ways to protect your skin

include:

Wear sunscreen Wear light-weight,

long-sleeved shirts and pants

Wear a hat Wear sunglasses Stay in the shade and

limit time in the sun

August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month!

Gastroparesis Awareness looks to raise awareness of this gastrointestinal disorder. How Does Gas-troparesis Develop? In healthy people, stomach

muscles use strong contractions to pass food through the digestive tract effectively. However, the spontaneous movement of these muscles is dis-rupted in people experiencing gastro-paresis. This causes the stomach to have difficulty

emptying. Gastroparesis can lead to significant blood sugar fluctuations and nutritional de-

fects. People may even suffer from frequent nausea or vomiting due to their condition. Other common symptoms include: Reduced appetite, Weight

loss, Bloating, Abdominal pain, Feeling full after little food. Unfortunately, not much is known about the

causes of gastroparesis. Cases where the origin is unknown are called idiopathic gastroparesis (IG). However, there are some documented causes of

gastroparesis, such as: Multiple sclerosis. Botched gastric surgery, Mismanaged diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Certain medications, such as narcotic pain-relievers, Rare underlying conditions such as am-

yloidosis or scleroderma, The lack of knowledge about the causes of gastroparesis calls for more

clinical research on the subject. For this reason, it is important to continue fighting for funding of gastro-

paresis research.
