Sandy Grove, Gothic Revival Elements• Gothic Revival elements:

– Peaked, gothic-style windows in lieu of original Greek Revival

– Front vestibule w/steeple (original double door entry enclosed by vestibule); Palladian window between entrance in-filled with clapboard

Original Greek Revival windows shortened and “Gothicized” with peaked surrounds (left). Front vestibule and steeple added to enclose the original double door entrance on north elevation (above); slave entrance on south elevation in-filled with clapboard.

Interior Elements• Hand-planed pews• Elevated dado/pulpit• Central supportive columns• Ghost marks on floor and ceiling (covered by

metal/wood) mark loci of early wood stoves (used as heat sources)

• Interior reoriented in 1917 renovation: pews turned around; dado/pulpit relocated; slave entrance in-filled
