THE EARLY EVALUATION AND TREATMENT OF INFANTS WITH CEREBRAL MOTOR DISTURBANCES SANDTA BOBATH/NDT ADVANCED BABY COURSE This 10-day course is designed for Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists treating infants and young children who have Neuro-Motor Disorders. The course provides information related to typical and atypical development of infants including gross motor, sensory, fine-motor, oral-motor, respiratory and phonatory development. Assessment and treatment planning will be looked at from the perspective of the ICF Model. Treatment strategies for infants, parent education, medical management as well as adjuncts to treatment will be covered in the course content. The major emphasis is on direct treatment strategies which will be covered through patient clinicals sessions, treatment practicals with participants and patient demonstrations. March 2 – 6, March 9 – 13, 2020 Dates: This course runs for 2 weeks and requires full-time attendance from 8:00-4:30 during weekdays Johannesburg, Parktown Place: Dr Gay L. This 10-day course is designed for Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists treating

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Gay L. Girolami, is a Clinical Professor and the Director of Professional Studies in the Department

of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Girolami received her BS in physical

therapy from Marquette University and an MS in pediatric physical therapy with a minor in

curriculum design from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her doctoral

degree in Movement Sciences in the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of

Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Girolami is a co-developer of the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP).

Before coming to UIC she was a faculty member at Concordia University Wisconsin in the Doctor of

Physical Therapy Program. Prior to shifting her focus to an academic career, Dr. Girolami served

for 26 years as the founding executive director of Pathways Center in Glenview, Illinois. Pathways

is a multidisciplinary, non-profit outpatient clinic with the mission of providing evidence-based

assessment and treatment to children with neurological and developmental conditions.

Dr. Girolami's is active in the Pediatric Section of American Physical Therapy Association, past

president of the Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association and a member of the American

Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.

Diane Fritts Ryan OTR/L received her BS. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Illinois.

Her work experience includes assessment and treatment of infants, children and young adults with

neurological disorders as well as developmental delays. Diane works in an outpatient clinic which

offers a multidisciplinary approach to pediatric treatment including OT, PT, ST, Technology,

Nutrition, and other services. Diane is on the Follow up clinic team for DuPage Neonatology from

2005-present. Diane teaches the OT portion of the Basic Pediatric Certificate course, the Advanced

Baby course and Advanced UE course as well as other short courses related to UE and hand

treatment, infant assessment and treatment, infant regulation, and vision. She is the OT team

member for the infant follow-up clinic in DuPage county since 2000. She has training in adjuncts

of: Kinesiotaping, NMES, TES, and the AHA Evaluation. Diane has publications in the NDTA

Newsletter as well as co-authored book chapters on assessment and treatment of infants with

neurological conditions.

SLT is a certified Senior Speech instructor in Neuro-Developmental Therapy (NDT). Karien Marais

She specializes in the assessment and treatment of oral-motor, feeding and respiratory-phonatory

problems in infants and children with neuro-motor disorders. She has a private practice in

Pretoria, where she does intensive programs for children. In addition, Karien has over 25 years'

experience working in Schools for children with special needs, Universities and Private practice.

She has been evaluating and treating babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at some local

hospitals for over 25 years. She is also a Certified PROMPT therapist.

A 2 days TIMP Course and 2 days TREATMENTS OF THE HAND IN THE CHILD WITH

NEUROLOGICAL IMPAIRMENT will be held simultaneously on the 28 and 29 February 2020

before the baby course.
