At Sandpiper’s last meeting Andy Fontaine and David Off gave a presentation and demonstration of numerous ways to pre-stake an orchid as it begins to produce new growth. Methods were discussed of training newly established growth, to produce a pleasant looking and structurally sound growing orchid, before it begins its flowering cycle. When your orchid begins to set buds and then flower, numerous techniques were demonstrated on how to position and attractively display and present your flowers, in order to obtain your own personal satisfaction or to present them as an option for being judged. Andy and David also showed and demonstrated all of the tools and devices that are necessary to be used in the form of a ‘Staking Kit’ that all orchid growers should be encouraged to accumulate and have in their possession.

July is another great month for locating types of Pine Barren Orchids. Toward the end of July and to the beginning of August, you may see the Rattlesnake Plantain (Goodyera pubescens). This orchid is

similar to the Jewel Orchid. The leaves are white and green. The flowers start out green and then change over time to white. The Rattlesnake Plantain orchid thrives where you can find Lycopodium and near old foundations of houses. I have only found this orchid on Nature Conservancy property in Galloway Township.

Cattleya dowiana var. Rosita is native to the Atlantic coastal mountain areas in Costa Rica. This plant is considered extinct in nature and we know of only one clone that exists today as a mature plant. We have tried selfing this clone for 11 years. Finally, we were successful and now have seedlings available. What distinguishes this dowiana from others is the suffusion of scarlet veins in the petals, mimicking the lip.Light This Cattleya requires 1500-2000 footcandles to do well. As seedlings they should be kept shadier, almost in Phalaenopsis conditions, to promote larger leaf growth. When mature, this plant does not want high light like other Cattleyas. If the plant receives too much light, the flowers will be distorted.Temperature C. dowiana var. Rosita is a warm growing Cattleya, and should be grown at Phalaenopsis temperatures at all times. Nighttime temps should be between 60 - 65 degrees Fahrenheit and daytime temps at 75-85 degrees F.Humidity 50-60% or higher is ideal.Water We highly recommend using clean water, such as

rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water. Water as the plant approaches dryness during the growing season. During winter, dry out well between watering.Fertilizer Fertilize with GrowMore 20-10-20 at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. We also highly recommend Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green Jungle every time you water.Flowering Flowering season is usually late June to early July. The flowers are large,

well shaped with a lemony fragrance. The colors are yellow with scarlet veins in the lip and petals.Repotting Repot this plant only during periods of growth, when you see new growths beginning at the base of the plant. Do not repot this plant in midwinter or in midsummer, as this will cause the plant great stress and you may lose the clone.

Bugs be gone With the splendid weather we've had the past few weeks, those of us who have plants outside can almost hear them purring. But, we need to remember the dreadful thought of bringing bugs back into our houses this fall. The easiest, and first step is to keep them up off the ground. They can be hung in trees or placed on benches. 20 inches above the ground is the minimum recommended height. Diazanon can be used around the area where your plants are located to further protect your babies from ants and sal bugs. Slug bait should also be periodically applied on and around the plants.  For those who still have their plants inside, this is a good opportunity to take any plants that have a bug problem and get them outside into an area that is protected from the sun, so natural predators can take care of the pests.

SANDPIPER’S ANNUAL ORCHID AUCTION will be coming up at our October 22nd meeting. Now is a good time to begin setting aside those plants, divisions, or duplicate items

that you would consider parting with and could donate to our Annual Orchid Auction.
