Guru Piari Sadh Sangat Ji, Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for giving me the opportunity to serve as chairperson for the year 2014. Thank you for your constant support, cooperation and encouragement. A look back at the past year shows significant accomplishments as well as much that remains to be done. Among the accomplishments are the introduction of new programs expanding the roster of events at GNFA: 1. Weekly Social Program for Seniors: A much-needed and very successful

program for seniors runs every Tuesday from 10 am-1 pm. Seniors get together to exercise, participate in discussion groups, enjoy crafts, cook, play games, dance and socialize.

2. Sikh Youth Open Mic Night: GNFA's Youth Committee hosted a creative social event for Sikh youth of the Washington metropolitan area to share poetry, songs and skits.

3. Health Fair: Under one tent, several free facilities including lab tests, screening tests, flu shots, consultations with physicians from a dozen specialties, as well as access to 32 vendors offering enrollment in Medicaid, information on free health clinics, disease prevention education, mental health education, and much more were offered.

4. Enrollment in Kaiser Permanente's Free Health Insurance program (CHAPS) for those with income eligibility: This is a valuable resource for the most vulnerable who have no access to any other public or private health coverage.

5. Movie Night: This family-friendly outdoor event at GNFA, organized by the Community and Cultural Affairs Committee, brought together all age groups for an evening of socializing over delicious food and an inspiring movie.

Message From The Outgoing Chairperson

6. Outreach Programs: a. Educational Programs: Students taking World Religions class at four Maryland high schools participated

in learning about Sikhi at GNFA in November and December. With much interest and enthusiasm, they attended divans led jointly and ably by GNFA youth and adults, heard presentations, actively participated in question and answer sessions, and partook of langar.

b. Food and Winter Clothing Drive: The donations will go to a local food pantry and homeless shelter as we widen our ambit of community service.

GNFA Khalsa School has been showing steady growth every year. The focus on tailoring the curriculum and teaching style to the specific needs of different age groups, whether kindergartners or middle schoolers or young adults, has created a very successful program evidenced by the high enrollment of 180 students. The GNFA community is indebted to the nishkam seva of volunteer teachers and administrative staff that give so generously of their time and talents to impart knowledge of Sikh boli and virsa to our navi paneeri. The give back from Khalsa School graduates has been tremendous as they in turn take on the seva to serve as teachers. The fruitful partnership between the Dharmik Committee and the Khalsa School resulted in the participation of as many as 50 youth in the Japji Sahib paath recital competition as well as an inspiring youth-led program in observance of the shaheedi gurpurab of the chaar sahibzaade.

As for tasks remaining, the Board is very cognizant of the fact that the sangat is very keen to see the start of construction of the new Gurdwara building and it is fully committed to this task. The project is large in scope, requiring several permits involving stringent and time-consuming county requirements. A significant step in this direction was taken on November 3 with the filing of the application for the site permit. The county review process is underway, and it is hoped that the permit will be obtained in the early months of 2015 and work on the first phase of clearing the land and laying down utilities can begin as the weather opens up. The patience of the sangat is much appreciated by the management and sadh sangat is requested to continue with the unwavering support needed to bring this dream to fruition.

Another area where much more needs to be done is in outreach efforts. Reaching out to elected officials, law enforcement officials, educators and inter-faith leaders, as well as performing service-based projects in the larger community would reaffirm our core institutional values of education and service.

Sadh sangat ji, thank you once again for your active participation in making GNFA's endeavors for this year a success. I ask forgiveness for any shortcomings on my part. I look forward to the year ahead as one of vigorous growth with a strong partnership between the sadh sangat and the new management. Best wishes to you and yours for a very happy and blessed new year.

GNFA

Celebrates

Gurpurab

With

Fervor

Great devotion and fervor marked the five-day long celebration of Guru Nanak Sahib ji's Parkash Utsav at Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA), Silver Spring, Maryland. Melodious reinsabai (overnight) kirtan was held on Wednesday, November 5th from 8 pm to 2 am, with seva undertaken by Gobind and Pooja Hemnani. It was the good fortune of GNFA's Sadh Sangat to be visited by seven different Kirtan Jatha's who performed on that evening. Guru Ka Langar was served continuously by dedicated sevadaars. On Gurpurab day, November 6th, devotees started their day by attending Asa ji di Vaar early morning. In the evening, the beautifully lit Gurdwara Sahib was packed with hundreds of adults and children. The occasion was

palpable as festively dressed sangat greeted each other warmly. It was a beautiful inter-generational gathering, with all age groups participating enthusiastically. The diwan hall reverberated with a full throated rendition of "miti dhund jag chanan hoa" led by Bhai Jagmohan Singh ji and jatha. Sardar Harjap Singh recited inspirational poetry that extolled Guru Nanak's message of equality of all and universal brotherhood. On Saturday morning, November 8th, Jap Ji Sahib paath recital competition was coordinated by the GNFA Dharmik Committee. This paath recital is part of the High - 5 program of GNFA. The goal of this program is to encourage youth to memorize the 5 Nitnem Baanis by the time they graduate high school.

GNFA Khalsa School supports this endeavor by integrating paath memorization and understanding into its curriculum. Participants between the ages of 3 to 16 years of age were divided into 5 different groups per the

age and their ability to recite the number of Jap Ji Sahib pauris. The turnout was excellent, as a total of 50 kids participated in this recital, and 6 children had memorized the entire paath. The children who recited the entire paath were each awarded $100, and all the participants were recognized with certificates, gift cards and pizza. A highlight of Sunday, November 9th celebrations was kirtan and speeches by the Khalsa school students that was greeted with enthusiastic jakaras by the sangat. The chunnis and dastaars worn by Khalsa school students and teachers were bright, festive, and in a beautiful sunshine lemon yellow color. Sardar Manmohan Singh gave an eloquent speech, highlighting the importance of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji's timeless and universal teachings that emphasize the oneness of all humankind, graced by the One Creator. The Panj Pyarey dressed in their gleaming traditional attire, led the Nagar Kirtan and Choley Sahib di seva, (changing of the Nishan Sahib seva). During the Nagar Kirtan Khalsa School flag bearers waved their saffron colored flags displaying their immense Sikh pride.

The religious tradition observed during Gurpurab was indeed inspiring for one’s soul.

Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

Shaheedi Diwas Speech

My name is Aashna Kaur and I am in GNFA Khalsa School. On his Shaheedi Diwas, I am here to describe to you why we remember Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s Martyrdom. In India, 1675, a ruler called himself Emperor Aurangzeb. He came from a line of rulers who were mainly tolerant of other faiths and religions. However, Aurangzeb did not believe in any form of tolerance allowing any religion to flourish except his own. He was a tyrant. He believed that if people did not give into conversions by demand, they would have to be converted by force. To accomplish his beliefs, he directed his governors to carry out his orders. In the same year, in Anandpur, a group of Kashmiri Brahmins, led by

Aashana K Singh Grade 3, GNFA Khalsa School

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Bah’ Jinahn di pakariye Sar dije bah’ na chhoriye Tegh Bahadur bolaea Dhar payae, dharam na chhoriye.

In this, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji says, Give up your head, but forsake not those whom you have undertaken to protect. Says Tegh Bahadur, Sacrifice your life, but do not relinquish your faith.

Page 9: Sandesa - s1740.pcdn.co · asked to convert or face death. Bhai Mati Daas said, "There is only one religion, the religion of God. Whomever belongs to it, be he a Hindu or a Muslim

Pundit Kirpa Ram came to Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, pleading him to save their honor. The Mughal governor of Kashmir was putting them under threat of harsh and unreasonable taxes, atrocities, cruelties and humiliation of their daughters. The Mughal governor demanded the Kashmiri Brahmins to give up their sacred thread and convert to Islam. The Guru’s response was, “Such activities can only be stopped by a sacrifice of a great person.” Just then Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s son of eight years, Gobind Rai (who later became our 10th guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji) came along and saw his father in deep thought. He enquired about the reason. Upon hearing it, he offered a possible solution by saying "Who else is greater then you, O father?” By these words, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji knew his Dharam. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji advised the Kashmiri Brahmins to go to the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, and tell him that if he were able to convince Guru Ji to convert, then they would follow the same lead. Pundit Kirpa Ram agreed and Aurangzeb issued summons for Guru. Guru performed the ceremony that declared that the next Guru would be his son, Gobind Rai. His three devoted disciples, Bhai Dayal Daas, Bhai Sati Daas and Bhai Mati Daas insisted on going along with him, and Guru ji agreed. Dayal Daas, Mati Daas and Sati Daas as well as the Guru were brought to the open space in front of the police station where now stands a fountain. The eldest of Guru’s companions, Bhai Mati Daas was asked to convert or face death. Bhai Mati Daas said, "There is only one religion, the religion of God. Whomever belongs to it, be he a Hindu or a Muslim belongs to the true religion. A truly religious man neither converts others by force, nor changes his faith by submitting to force. Everyone has a right to live according to one's faith. I shall not embrace Islam even if I am put to death."

Page 10: Sandesa - s1740.pcdn.co · asked to convert or face death. Bhai Mati Daas said, "There is only one religion, the religion of God. Whomever belongs to it, be he a Hindu or a Muslim

Upon uttering these words, Bhai Mati Daas was tortured and executed. His brother, Sati Daas and Dayal Daas were also tortured to death in front of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji after condemning this action. While watching these sacrifices, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was doing naam simran. Their immortal sacrifices would not go in vain. (Pause) The following morning Guru ji reflected upon the supreme sacrifice of his grandfather, Guru Arjan Dev before being taken to Chandani Chowk. At Chandani Chowk, the Qazi asked him either to show a miracle, embrace Islam or face death. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji refused to accept Islam. So he was beheaded. Now in Chandani Chowk, in the same spot where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji sacrificed his life, there stands a very famous gurudwara called Sis Ganj. It is one of the nine historical gurudwaras in Delhi. His sacrifice did not go unnoticed. Many Sikhs were angry with Aurangzeb. They were filled with indignation. A Sikh even made an attempt on Aurangzeb's life. On Friday, 27 October 1676, the emperor went for a ride in a boat in the river Yamuna. When he alighted the boat and was about to get on the Takht-e-Rawan, which was a movable throne, a disciple of Guru Tegh Bahadur threw two bricks at the emperor, one of which hit the throne. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's execution irreversibly turned the tide of history of the Sikhs and of Punjab. When I think of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s Martyrdom, or Shaheedi, I don't let myself get depressed by the torture, by the pain and images of execution. While these do evoke a certain emotion within any Sikh, I prefer to remember Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji as a prominent figure- not just in Sikh history but also as an exemplar of universality and freedom of religion. I reflect about his values and his determination; and how he stood up for those who sought his protection. He inspires me. He lived by example and his convictions. His commitment to stand up for others fulfilled the legacy set out by Guru Nanak. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

We have been so fortunate to tap into a much-needed program for our sangat. To provide a program that encourages our sangat to come and do yoga and other exercises, talk and hear about holistic meditation, do facial reflexology, and other health related conversations. We all have many opportunities to do as much as we possibly can in following our 'teachers'. And I can assure you that we are all getting better at all the poses and stretches and asasnas in yoga! And we recently started Latino dancing, with a Peruvian teacher, named Melva. The photographs with this article tell the story of our fun times at this Tuesday program! Having the privilege of meeting some amazing teachers like Mrs Tulsi(Yoga), Mr Matta (PE exercises), Dr Siddhu ( Holistic Medicine and Mindfulnesso), Mr Murali Punjabi (Yoga, Spirituality), Mrs. Joginder Kaur (Facial Reflexology), Mr. Kakkar (Whole Body Exercises) and other teachers! A huge, big thank you to all our students and teachers for making our Tuesday mornings so pleasant! We are looking for volunteers to help with bringing in people who need rides. Please contact Bahi Sahib Harvinder Singh ji if you can help. Please do come and visit on a Tuesday morning. You will see the happy faces of all the people who attend! We have a delicious, healthy langar too! Thanks to Bhai Sahib Harvinder Singh ji for his support and to Nirmal Singh ji for all the great langar he cooks for the Tuesday group.

“Becoming Gurbani” – A Reflection

Recently, I came across a gem in Sri Guru Granth Sahib that I would like to share.

Satgur ki bani Sat Swaroop hai Gurbani bunaey Satguru’s Bani is the embodiment of the Truth

The concept of Gurbani emanating from the Creator is quintessential to Sikhi. We revere and venerate it because it is Guru’s word or the Shabad Guru.

What follows next is intriguing: Gurbani buneay Become Gurbani (A rather literal translation)

Another possible interpretation of Gurbani buneay is that buneay refers to Sat Swaroop stating that Gurbani makes one the embodiment of Truth. Either way, how does this evolution of becoming Gurbani or Sat Swaroop take place?

Gurbani uses metaphors to take us to a deeper level of understanding. In one pithy word buneay, Guru Ram Das has put forth an immensely powerful message. He is commanding us to live the essence of Gurbani. It is not enough to listen to Gurbani with rapt attention, or be moved to tears by its beauty and expansiveness, or sing it joyfully with our heart and soul immersed in it, or attempt to understand it in all its depth. While singing and listening to Gurbani is a beautiful and elevating experience, we have to let Gurbani permeate our life and its mighty power will transform our consciousness to its purest form- Sat Swaroop.

Discussions and dialogues are great tools to stimulate our interest. But we have to walk the razor sharp course Gurbani lays out for us, give wings to our aspirations, and stay constantly tuned to its powerful guidance. The principles are simple. To follow them is tough and requires constant vigilance over thoughts and actions.

Aristotle, the Greek philosopher said; “We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I marvel at the vision of synchronicity that trained soldiers display during a formal march-past. It probably took hours of daily practice over several years to create the unification they exhibit. Similarly, a dancer melts into the dance and becomes poetry in motion after many years of consistent practice. To train the mind to live in perfect accord with Gurbani is an undertaking that is far greater than mastering the movement of the body. It requires perseverance, commitment, and a single-mindedness of purpose that is beyond any physical discipline.

Here is the key to success. The human mind is highly impressionable. It becomes what it dwells upon.

Eh mun jaisa seway taisa hovey

In a widely popular folk song Bulleh Shah the famous 17th century Sufi poet of Punjab celebrates the intense love of Heer for Ranjha:

Ranjha Ranjha kardi hun main aape Ranja hoyee Saddo mainu Dheedo Ranjha Heer na aakho koyee

By constant remembrance of my beloved Ranjha , I have become Ranjha Call me Dheedo Ranjha for I am no more Heer

We too, become one with Gurbani through constant remembrance. When Gurbani permeates our very breath and becomes the pulse of our life, when every thought, every action and interaction reflects its beauty and purity, we are getting closer to Gurbani. We have to experience Gurbani in the most personal and profound manner, awaken to its insights and practice its teachings with unfaltering steadfastness. It is a monumental process.

Ultimately though, it is only through the grace of Waheguru that we are able to vibrate Gurbani and become one with it. There are temptations and pitfalls along the way. The glitter and lure of the world ensnares us. Egos create walls. Resolutions weaken. Good intentions breakdown. Gurbani illumines our way and strengthens us through the peaks and valleys of our life. Its guidance saves us from temptations, teaches us humility and surrender. Like the beam of a laser, Gurbani cuts through our outer surface. The veil of separation drops. A shimmering light that is our true essence is revealed. It is thus that we become SatSwaroop, the embodiment of the truth.

It is the work of a life time, rather several life times to “become” gurbani or “Sat Swaroop”

Page 24: Sandesa - s1740.pcdn.co · asked to convert or face death. Bhai Mati Daas said, "There is only one religion, the religion of God. Whomever belongs to it, be he a Hindu or a Muslim

It was an absolute pleasure to be hosting the langar sewa on Wednesday, Sep 24' 2014 at GNFA.

Following were the sponsors/organizers for the Langar sewa: Aayush Gupta, Ashwin Saboo, Kartik Radhakrishnan, Virender Soi, Dr. Harinder Singh, Vansh Mir

We're mostly young professionals from different parts of India and reside in the College Park/ Silver Spring area. We frequent the GNFA Gurdwara and are always amazed at the warmth and kindness of the entire community that we come across. It's been more than 3 years being part of GNFA for me personally and around 6 years for Ashwin Saboo and there has been no stopping ever since :)

As a part of our giving back to the community and sewa, we group up and organize a langar sewa at least 1-2 times a year. This year, Ashwin had organized the Sewa earlier in January, and we all came together for Sewa again in September. The experience was amazing this time as we had quite a few Ragis visiting us from India as well. Hence, a lot of people had come to be part of the kirtan.

Langar Sewa at GNFA: Experience of a Life Time

Page 25: Sandesa - s1740.pcdn.co · asked to convert or face death. Bhai Mati Daas said, "There is only one religion, the religion of God. Whomever belongs to it, be he a Hindu or a Muslim

There was ample turnout from the students of University of Maryland, who are our close friends. Our young dedicated team of volunteers did a tremendous job of pickups and drop offs since most of the students don't have cars. Quite a few students even rented zip cars to be part of our Langar sewa. There were >300 people (>100 students) that evening, which is uncharacteristic of a Wednesday Sangat. It was pleasantly overwhelming to see a lot of folks from all age groups and religions, willingly doing sewa and offering their services to be part of this noble endeavor.

For a lot of folks, this was their first time visiting a Gurdwara. In fact, 3 years back, GNFA was my first time to a Gurdwara too. We took this opportunity to impress upon them the glorious culture of Sikhism, the deeper meaning of Sewa and the rich heritage of the Gurus and their sermons.

In the end, I know every single person felt really wonderful and satisfied being part of this wonderful experience. On behalf of all the organizers, I'd like to extend our deepest gratitude to all the volunteers and the entire GNFA family for supporting us and making this happen.

A well attended free Health Fair, open to people of all different ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds was held at Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA), Silver Spring, Maryland, on September 14 from 11 am - 3 pm. With six hundred attendees of all hues availing themselves of multiple medical resources under one roof, the acute need for such services was apparent.

The initial kick off to the Health Fair was one week prior. On September 7, 2014 Quest Diagnostics sponsored 250 free labs at GNFA that screened for Complete Blood Count (CBC), Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP), Hemoglobin A1c for diabetes screening, Lipid Panel for high cholesterol diagnosis and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test for evaluating thyroid gland status. Patients then had an opportunity to return a week later, and discuss the findings of their blood work with one of the 33 volunteer physicians present on-site. Cardiologist Dr. Priti Kaur Sood stated, “Patients whose tests found newly diagnosed diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol or other treatable conditions will surely reap long-term health benefits, and by accessing the resources we have for them today will lower their overall long-term risk.”

At the Health Fair, there was efficient triaging of patients to either primary care, or to a dozen medical specialties, and/or to the impressive group of 32 vendors housed under an enormous 40 x 60 foot tent. In addition to primary care, the medical specialties available for on-site, free consultations in a privacy setting included cardiology, dentistry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, nephrology, neurology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, radiology, rheumatology and podiatry. Walgreens sponsored 400 free flu shots. Other valuable free services offered were bone density screening by the Asian American Health Initiative, glaucoma screening by the Society for Prevention of Blindness, hearing test and dental exam. There were yoga sessions on site, diabetes and cancer prevention education vendors, healthy living demos and advice booths. Mental and behavioral health information, often a taboo topic, was sensitively offered by Counselors Helping South Asians/Indians (Chai). The Maryland Health Connection enrollment information to the uninsured and under-insured about their health care coverage options under the Federal Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, and booths with information about WIC programs and Holy Cross Hospital clinics for the uninsured in Aspen Hill and Gaithersburg were deemed very informative by attendees. There was enthusiastic give back by the attendees. The INOVA blood donation mobile van was visited by a steady stream of blood donors. The Samar Group obtained bone marrow sign ups and the Washington Regional Transplant enrolled organ donors. A diverse array of charitable organizations such as Philippines Nurses Association, Chinese Culture and Community Center, Muslim Community Clinic Inc., Silver Spring, the Asian American Center of Frederick and the Asian American Health Initiatives, supported the Health Fair. assisted by Dr. Gurinder Singh and Dr. Sheena Khurana. Dr. Harminder Singh Sethi served as Chief Medical Officer and Dr. Priti Sood headed the team of volunteers. Prabhleen Kaur Aneja coordinated blood donations. Sardarni Harsharan Kaur stated, “The outstanding accomplishments of the day were made possible by the cohesive and dedicated collaboration of the Health Fair planning team, physicians, allied medical personnel, county and state health agencies, charitable organizations, countless volunteers as well as support from the GNFA Sangat. On behalf of GNFA, she thanked Coordinator Mayur Mody for ‘providing excellent leadership, and inspiring us all with his vision, selfless service and indefatigable energy.” Thanks were extended to Radio Zindagi and Jus Punjabi for advertising and coverage. Fair attendee Mrs. Kavita Dawar stated, “This Health Fair not only saves us time in comparison to so many days that pass on by until your parents get to see different specialists, but it has empowered them to be advocates for their own health.” She was accompanying her sister who brought their 80-year -old father from Virginia. Patients stated they were thankful for receiving the physicians’ undivided attention and expressed that the volunteers were compassionate and provided nurturing for them throughout the day. Holy Cross Hospital’s community outreach program representatives opined that this was one of the most organized and comprehensive health fairs they have been to. Free food for all attendees provided by GNFA and a moon bounce for kids set up by Amerigroup added an element of enjoyment at the Fair. An upbeat atmosphere was palpable, and the glorious Fall skies played a vital part to the success of the day. The pizza delivery man asked, “Is this open to me too? I don’t have insurance.” On being told he was most welcome, he smiled and said he would be right back after completing his shift. “This health fair was not only beneficial for the patients, but uplifting for the Sikh community as a whole. Going forward, the patients today have made a positive association with the Sikh community,” stated Dr. Sadhna Kaur Khatri. Given the overwhelming community response and the clear need for such Health Fairs, GNFA has committed to making the Health Fair an annual event.
