Indigenous Girls’ Basketball Congratulations to all the girls who played for our school team, The Sanderson Bombers, in the 3rd Annual Nat ional Ind igenous Basketba l l Championships held at Marrara Basketball Stadium 9-12 September 2008 (hosted by the National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Basketball Association). These matches were the first for the Bombers, and they got off to a good start coming 4th in the Under 16s. Thanks to our PSPI Committee for contributing to the project, to Carol Hughes for her care and support chaperoning the players, to Ms Cox for setting it up so we could participate in this special event, and to Patricia Graham for being a wonderful coach. Patricia is an experienced national basketball player, a busy mum and an inspiring Indigenous woman for the girls. Sanderson girls will continue to train with her and play more matches in the future. Next year the Championships will be held in Cairns. Ms Rumler, Team Manager (Photography courtesy - Les Saxby of Dreamtime Connection 2008)

SunSmart Sanderson Middle School actively promotes the health and wellbeing of the school community and because of this we have adopted a SunSmart Policy. Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. It is estimated that more than 75% of all skin cancers could be prevented by practicing sun protection early in childhood and adolescence. The policy was developed to ensure that all students and staff attending Sanderson Middle School are protected from over-exposure to the harmful UV radiation from the sun.

From the commencement of Term 4 students participating in outdoor class activities will be required to wear a hat with a brim that protects both their eyes and ears. Students without an appropriate hat will be able to borrow a suitable hat from the staff member taking their class.

Immunisations/Mantoux Testing The third and final HPV vaccination for girls will be given Wednesday 8 October. Students eligible for Mantoux testing will receive the test on Tuesday 11 November. It is very important that students who have been tested are at school on Friday 14 November for the test to be read and the results sent home.

Water~Water~Water~Water~Water~Water Up to 70% of the human body is made of water. Water allows nutrients and oxygen to travel around the body. Water also acts as a lubricant (eg in the eyes and the joints), a cushion (between organs) and a waste remover (in urine, sweat and tears). Because fluid is lost from our bodies through sweat, urine, faeces and on our breath we need to continually top the amount of water in our bodies. We do this by drinking water. If we don’t have enough water, we can get a headache and experience fatigue and irritability.

Students need reminders and prompts to stop and have a drink. Students should be encouraged to bring a bottle of water to school and keep water bottles on their desks for sipping in hot

climates like we experience in the NT. Avenal Lockett, Health Promoting School Nurse

Eye Dissections in Science The Year 9’s studying “Waves & Electricity” this term had the opportunity to do an eye dissection. Both classes were very professional and careful with the practical and they were very happy with the learning experience. ‘You see the world because light gets into your eyes. Your eye uses that light to make up an image of the world inside your eye - just as a camera uses light to make a photograph’. Students got the opportunity to identify the external and internal features of a cows eye, discussing the light path and understanding how the image is formed by removing the lens and investigating the convex shape and observing the optic nerve. Great ‘hands on’ lesson - something I’m sure the students will remember.

Sanderson was VERY lucky to be able to have a Blue Light Disco on Wednesday 10th September. Even though we only had short notice all the groovers, movers and shakers, disco maniacs and boogiers came out on the night. Heaps of prizes were given out for some great dancing and the SRC did a great job selling tickets, drinks and sausages. The night was a huge success and it could not have been done without the hard work of all the teachers who came and helped out. A huge thank you to you all. Fingers crossed, we hope we can do it again and get on down some time soon.

This term forty-five students participated in “Cooling Conflict” - a combined Drama and SOSE subject. Students studied interpersonal conflict and explored skills to manage conflict and bullying in there own lives. Through a combination of drama and peer teaching, students devised plays about realistic and complicated conflict scenarios. During the performances, audience members were encouraged to replace the actors to try and de-escalate the conflict. Each time the play was acted out a different ending was presented.

In the class students developed an understanding of the structure of conflict, why conflict happens and possible ways of dealing with it. Through this understanding, students can work to prevent, de-escalate or resolve conflict in their own lives. The subject assists students with examining how conflict escalates and teaches them how to intervene and manage conflict. Sara Scrutton

Students from the “Natural Disasters” science class had the opportunity to construct and finally erupt their volcano in class using ‘elephants toothpaste’. Ms Davis from the front office presented Marshall McDonogh with a certificate and prize for having the best volcano. Students also researched the ‘Indian Ocean Earthquake’ in 2004 and how it affected the Earth globally. Finally, they constructed the inner structure of the Earth using model plasticine and labelling the distance and temperatures. They all enjoyed the “hands on” approach and also winning the prizes for answering questions. Ms Pastrikos

This term Ms Tucker’s Indigenous Languages class went with Galitju, our Yolngu elder, and Brod, one of our teacher aides, on a ‘bush tucker’ (Ngatha Ga Borum) excursion to Lake Alexander and East Point Reserve. The aim of the excursion is to learn as much Yolngu Matha language whilst doing the age old cultural activity of hunting and gathering.

The students had an opportunity to collect and then try two different types of bush peanuts (balk balk and buyama), bush figs, bush

passionfruit, long bums (boonba) and periwinkles. They also got to see Galitju spear fishing with a traditionally made spear. Our catch of the day was three stingrays (Marinjalk).

When we had finished collecting all our bush tucker, we then went back to the Lake Alexander Park and cooked up the long bums and periwinkles, which the students then had a lot of fun trying. For lunch we also had bully beef and rice - a good old Darwin dish which the kids all loved.

Fun was had by all who participated, and I would personally like to thank all the students who joined me for their active participation and PERFECT manners. You made me proud! Yindi manymak djamulkuli! (Very good kids!)

Parent Contributions Contributions for the school Year 2008 are $120.00 per student. These can be paid at the front office preferably by cheque or EFTPOS. At the last School Council Meeting, it was resolved that the contributions should remain the same in 2009 and be reviewed for 2010. Sharon Handley, Admin Manager

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS ARE AND WHAT THEY’RE UP TO? How often does your Year 7-9 child “sleep over” at a friend’s place? Do you know the other parents/carers? Do you know if they will be at home? Some suggestions for RESPONSIBLE parents/carers: * Telephone or visit the family of your child’s friend if he/she plans to visit overnight. * Ask which adult will be taking responsibility for your child and whether that person will be at home all evening. * Check whether the young people will be going out and, if so, where they will be. * Make sure that your child knows how to contact you if there is a problem. YOUR CHILD COULD EASILY BE AT RISK … SO DON’T FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE ASKING THE QUESTIONS!

Should a tearful teenager turn up on your doorstep asking for shelter, make sure that you phone his/her parents before you offer a refuge. It is only RESPONSIBLE to allow that young person to stay if his/her parents know where he/she is!

Recycling Uniforms Please donate old Sanderson Middle School

uniforms back to us so that we can help ensure all students are wearing the mandatory uniform.

REMINDER It is now compulsory for all students to wear a School Uniform. There are plenty of shirts available for sale. Any faulty uniforms need to be returned for exchange as soon as possible.

SMS MANDATORY UNIFORM POLICY Our uniform consists of: • A polo neck t/shirt (range of colours) with the new

school logo on it; • Appropriate shorts, trousers or skirts; • Enclosed footwear eg sneakers. School uniforms are available in the Front Office. All families will be supported with uniform purchases via the 2008/9 government voucher. If students do not follow these dress requirements they will be asked to go home and change.

Our thanks to ex-Sanderson High School teacher Sarah Berg. Sarah, who now works for the Professionals Real Estate Company, has kindly donated an award to be presented each term for excellence in creative writing. This term’s award goes to Shaquille Wright from Ms Moon’s “Poetic Justice” English class. Shaquille received his award for overall achievements in English. Congratulations, Shaquille and keep on writing.
