Words from the Executive director

From 2008 to 2009 SANDAY have successfully roofed the interventionson its Direction plans (2008 to 2009) through highly conscious rapidoutbreak implementation plans. On the other hand from now SANDAY is

on its way forward to review accomplishments and constraints on itsdirection (2008 to 2009) to figure out an effective response andstrategic plan for 2010.The organization made efforts geared towards addressing its thematic programme andactivities areas that include education, hygiene youth and women skills empowerment.

The year 2009 recorded heightened activities at areas of youth and women skills

empowerment hygiene, empowerment, besides implementing activities in the fourthematic areas, SANDAY was not blind to the need to build the capacity of both staff and

volunteers.SANDAY also mobilized resources to carry out education activities for the most

vulnerable communities especially teenagers in Berbera and village towns on the other

hand, the organization facilitated various community dialogues and trainings which weregeared hygiene and to address HIV and AIDS, pioneered several community-based HIV

and AIDS activities meant not only to create awareness, but also to find culturally-acceptable means to tackle the pandemic. SANDAY continued to work

The tremendous strides we achieved in 2009 were as a result of the support of our kindPartners including INGOs, LNGO, community members, private sectors andline ministries and we particularly thank to caritas Swiss group, Gavo,Berbera municipality, ministry of education, ministry of family affairs andsocial development office in Berbera, ministry of religious affairs andendowment.

Thanks also to our board of directors, SANDAY staff and volunteers andother partners for their invaluable support and commitment in bothfundraising and involvement of all community based activities.Enormous thanks are also due to the members, BOD and secretariat ofSANDAY for theirContributions of the progress.

Finally I can not keep drafting this report with out mentioning againthe hard working staff and volunteers , of SANDAY who were stronglyinvolved all that activities implemented by SANDAY.At last Im very grateful for all those who gave their time, thought andenergy to helpProgress and achievements towards the projects, as well as morepleasure ofSANDAY line ministries including, ministry of family affairs and

SANDAYis a youth based non governmental and profit seeking organization whichoperates in Sahel region (both urban and rural) and its head office is Berbera.

SANDAY was born from commitment made by number of young youth on 13/oct/2005,who devoted humanitarian principles and dedicated to development.

Also initiative arose due to build strengthen coordination among the youth, and how

effectively respond the obstacles of agriculture which currently become vulnerable and

faced log period of lack of rainfall as well as to empower women so as to participatespheres of knowledge.

SANDAY Is a voluntary, non-profit, non-sectarian non-governmental organization founded

in 2005 by a group of youngyouth male & female.And exist to enhance agriculture and to empower community especially youth by

mobilizing through education and advocating them to get better life

Sanitation area:

Sanitation and hygiene promotion

This project was implemented by SANDAY and was funded CARITASSWISS GROUP which has partnership with SANDAY and Berberamunicipality in the areas of education, hygiene and sanitationpromotion.

Objectives

To enhance the hygienic standard of shidka village

To empower community to participate sanitation initiatives.

Major accomplishment

The hygienic standard of shidka village was improved

Meeting among the community and SANDAY has beenconducted in order to activate the community contribution.

Sanitation competition among schools in collaboration with CARITAS /Swiss

group was conducted

In the last weekend the organization has been implemented wide sanitation campaign onshidhka village, which has been participated the community of the village and technically

supported by municipality.

Sanitation is partly organizational objectives so. The organization has consult anted with

the activity the sanitation executive of Berbera authority and he transmitted ourinformation to mayor after we have deeply discussion about the lack of sanitation area.

The mayor has promised to participate it suddenly.

In addition to that, the community have presented before implementation to organize asanitation committee that controlling the people in the activity.

The organization SANDAY has entirely achieved this activity by evaluating way of

implement.

Sanitation committee formation

During the activity of sanitation campaign which has been implemented at shidhka

village, SANDAY also has organized a committee that works hand in hand with theorganization in the field of sanitation.

The committee comprises village elders including youth and some city council members.

Furthermore, the committee has discussed and displayed a step stone which prevent therubbish in the village and also agreed to contribute a small fund to run some of theproject activities.

The role of the committee is maintained and monitoring the sustainable sanitation in the

village.

Sanitation on graves

First December, the SANDAY organization has organized a meeting by which consulting

the rubbish on graves b/w buroa sheikh and wadajir villages. This meeting the elders and

community members has attended in order to persuade them to take part sanitation area in

the village which can affect them.Apart from that, municipality has taken its role and supported this activity more technical

including car, man powers caterpillar, awareness cars.

Sanitation competition among schools

End of this activity the caritas/Swiss Group and SANDAY were conducted a competition

among the schools of the district for their level of sanitation.

On the other hand, the caritas has distributed all the students of schools a soap and T-Shirt print on (hand wash) and also this encouragement has brought to the students to

work hard their compounds of schools both in sanitation and hygiene how to earn/gain a

prize and SANDAY was the cornerstone in this activity.Finally, xasan Ali Awale School has been awarded the first class prize.

In the past months the organization has formed youth clubs in the Sahel school (one of

the field in which organization works actively)Therefore the clubs were doing a series of activities in the areas of sanitation and planting

small trees.

So in the first of this month the executive director has conducted a follow up meeting

with the youth clubs.

In addition to it was designed the action plan of the clubAnd finally after one week it was seen a nascent effort towards both planting of small

trees and sanitation campaigns

Progresses madeAfter the completion of the intervention the area looks clean and more hygienic in

compared to the past.

Education area:

Distribution of NFE materials

SANDAY in collaboration with head of the ministry of education in Berbera haddistributed non formal kit by one of the village schools (madrasad)1 that locates in the out

skirt of the Berbera town.

The kit contains note books pencils and eraser plus some entertainment kit which isintended the child.

Farewell party for Egyptian

The organization has organized the preparation of the fare well party for

Egyptian teachers who have been teaching secondary schools almost four years.

The organization has conducted fund raising meeting about this events with TELESOMSOLTELCO and business royal company.

All of them they responded the request for the fund except business royal company in

which his response is still pending.The ceremony was attended by the government officiates business people and community

as well as students during the ceremony the teachers were present certificates and lasting

Women empowerment:

Mini-Research

Assessing the capacity of the member organization in SADAN network is an attempt to

assess the current capacity of the SADAN member organizations which was proposed bySANDAY organization in consultation with the chairperson and council of SADAN and

the coordinator of ministry of family affairs and social development.

After the research it was planned to high light the strength and weakness of the memberorganizations as well as the ways of improving.

Mini Research proceedings

On 9 of April it was conducted consultation meeting of the preparation of research paper.

And it was nominated the research staffs.Additionally the town was divided in to three fields.

Starting of the research

After, reaching member organization through telephones and letters,It was started the research on 28/04/09 it took almost one week finally the research was

done successfully and the findings received were actually true.

Mini research accomplishment

Al most 13 organizations was reached and interviewed as wells as assessed their

capacity.

A questionnaire was designed to the individual organizations based on capacity

assessment items Mini research was identified.

Result

70% of women organizations are less capacitated in terms governance,administration. And programming.

Most organization has no financial system in place.

One member does all activities and has more than one title.

Most of them have no qualified skills.

Women international day

SAHEL region was widely celebrated through ceremonies, drama and narration of

poems, the ceremony was organized by the ministry of family affairs and social

development in collaborating with SANDAY organization.

More over in the evening SANDAY conducted a ceremony at its non- formal education,which locates in the out strict of the town.

Currently the organization was strongly involving in women development related

initiatives through its department of women empowerment, which carried out more

activities such as awareness campaigns on gender issues, and non formal educationprogram in which over 100 IDPs (internal displaced people) women were participating

Celebration ceremonies.

In the hall of Berbera universityAround 8:00 the celebration ofWID was opened, the ceremony jointly was intended tocommemorate the WID and the inauguration of the first regional umbrella which

consisting of 15 active organization in the region and SANDAY is also member of the

formation of the umbrella firstly was initiated by the coordinator of the ministry of familyaffairs, after consultation meetings with CBOs in the region.

The meeting was officially opened by the mayor of Berbera Abdale Mohed Ali he

deeply addressed and appreciated the activeness of the women in this eraAnd also fadumo saed undp officer was also addressed at the ceremony she strongly

encouraged women to continue their advocacy to wards women development.

The whole ceremony venue was graced with an attractive images and posters, and alsodrama and dancing many of which were talking the unique role of the women in the

society.

The issues which was raised the ceremony were.

Recognizing and supporting the role of women in the society and tirelessness effort towards the rebuilding and strengthen of peace and security during the out break of wars,

In addition to the enormous role of caring and supporting in the financial matter and

raising children.There are also hidden secrets which is uplifting socio-economic of the society, this event

is famous in Somali people.

During the ceremony the most emphasized points was the participation of The women inthe leadership of the country, and they presented national Declaration which is to support

womens participation in the political spheres, and in Sahel region there is a 4 women

whom are ready to attend in The upcoming municipality election.

Finally the day was gracing and all women were so keen and cheerfully to Advocate theirrole in a public manner.

Celebration proceedings through IEC material

Under the theme of the day which was (invest women and girls) the organization

designed colorful and attractive posters and it was presented in the main streets which isthe most crowd places of the town.

In addition to it is close to the schools and also audiences could see it UN interrupted

manner.It was designed in a well and attractive manner also the massage in which the narrative

disseminating is meaningful, as told by a group of school girls which was met the

members of sanday whom are capturing pictures.

Indeed, the posters will likely remain in their places almost one month, and the massage

will receive approximately two third of the society.

Evening special ceremony

In the same way the 8 march again was celebrated in the evening at the non formal schoolwhich locates in the out skirt of the town.

And there by chairman and the officer of women empowerment addressed speeches. Mssamaal the officer of women empowerment department and also the manager of non

formal program. Addressed in the ceremony and emphasized educating of women which

is same educating of whole society, as well as empowering them in order to able toadvocate their rights.

And also she mentioned the aim of this program which is to provide 150 female full

literacy and numeracy in one year and lastly she encouraged them to continue andcomplete the course. The chairperson has presented historical background of SANDAY

and the activities carried out he also informed upcoming activities which is dealing

sanitation and hygiene.Encouraging them and galvanizing into action their endeavor to join and have arepresentative in the political leadership.

And lastly it is our obligation to think globally and act as a locally.

To take an unprecedented step which is aiming to educate and improve as well as toinvest the women.

Youth empowerment.

SANDAY in collaboration with GAVO had organized world AIDS which is a day that is

marked for campaign against AIDS day ceremony which was presented as stage drama

poetry and foot ball competition at the BURSADE stadium.Also the organization has conducted a discussion forum as a means of reminding the

youth the effects and reality of HIV aids.

Additionally SANDAYhas conducted a public

awareness campaign at schools, and public crowd areas through car with microphones,

posters print on the theme of the day was stick on the streets.

Training objectives were:

To improve capacity of staff through on the job training including coaching, torturing and

role modeling, accompanied by practical steps during working hours with a supervision.Creating effective and efficient team work among staffs giving back stopping on

administrative and financial system management as well as enabling to fulfill their duties

with a minimum supervision

Training methodology

The training was emphasized learning by doing so the methods used to cover the gaps of

staff were coaching, tutoring and role modeling with supervision.

Every presentation has it own day and the other days was emphasized applying what thestaff have learn before, including guiding mentoring and how they applied acquired

knowledge.Directions for Future

As we are SANDAY a non-government, non-profit professional

institution that its base is BERBERA for the last four years butfunctioned all the villages of SAHEL region,But after a long and valuable consultation for the intellectuals SANDAYwould like to expand their mandate in the coming future because thereare more areas that needed to fix, so we are the human resource whosolve that problem effectively and efficiently.
