Additional Criteria Description
Silica Sand Mineral: Quartz, Minimum 99% SiO2
Source Must be a clean naturally occurring silica sand, washed and screened, not produced from crushed aggregate plant, round to sub-angular sands only.
Condition The clean silica sand must be free of rocks, shells, and/or other debris.
Infiltration, inches/hour Must drain adequately for site e.g., 15-20 inches/hour.
Color White as possible to reduce potential heat gain.
Penetrometer (Firmness), kg/cm2 Guideline Pending.
Sand Depth Minimum sand depth: 18" in center, 15" at side/end lines, 12" at perimeter of sand surface.
Overall Playing Quality It is strongly suggested that the school obtain a sample of candidate sand for evaluation and/or purchase a ton for player experience and comments.
(School Sampling and Experience) If possible, a school should visit a sand volleyball court constructed with candidate sand.
Geotextile: Separation and Drainage Overlays drainage pipes/gravel, placed over entire base of court complex and stapled to perimeter strip of facility. Provides placement surface for court sand.
Subsurface Drainage At least one 6" pipe per court length embedded in 12" washed gravel, sloped away from court either to open or pipe evacuation system.
Overall Playing Quality It is strongly suggested that the school obtain a sample of candidate sand for evaluation and/or purchase a ton for player experience and comments.

Outdoor courts are built North/South – Minimizes the interference of sun on players
and broadcasting – Net line runs East/West
