San’s Martial Arts
Junior Curriculum Overview
Thank you for choosing San’s Martial Arts. The intent of this manual is to help you and your child understand the
curriculum and expectations we have set in place for their advancement. Please understand that in many situations
your child will be exposed to other skills and know more than what is required for their promotion. These guidelines
represent “minimums” that they are required to know.
Please use this guide to help your child study. It is a reality that some of these skills are challenging. Without practice
at home, your child may take longer to promote. Martial arts training is about “individual achievement through group
effort”. Not everyone will promote at the same rate nor do they need to. Developing skill should be the ultimate
goal. It is my hope that we can work together, like the three points of a triangle, to enrich everyone’s experience to
its fullest. If you ever have a question, don’t hesitate to ask.
Students start at 10th Gup and move backwards in number towards 1st Gup. Eventually they become a Cho Dan Bo
or “Black Belt Candidate” and finally promote to 1st degree *Junior Black Belt). If your child’s attendance is consistent,
if they are highly motivated and they can demonstrate the techniques required, initially, they can promote every three
months. It is not uncommon for a student to need more time between belts. Once they reach the rank of 1st Gup
there is a minimum requirement of 6 months between Red/Stripe to Blue Belt and 6 months between Blue Belt to
Black Belt. This is a 39 month program roughly, however due to life events, most students will take longer to reach
this goal. Once a student is “in sync” with the belt testing cycle, they should continually be preparing for the next belt
test with the understanding that if they are not ready, they will have to wait for the next test. Our rule at San’s Martial
Arts is, “We don’t ask about testing”. We will let students know when we feel that they are ready for possible promo-
tion.
(*1st degree Junior Black Belt is a rank that is awarded to children under 16 years of age. Adult 1st degree Black Belt
and successively higher ranks are reserved for people ages 16 and older. This distinction is made based on maturity,
and experience I reserve the right to make acceptations to this rule on a case by case basis).
Please note: If your child stays in the program, at some point they will advance into the Teen/Adult class. The tradi-
tional curriculum is essentially the same, however, the requirements and expectations are slightly different. There is
also an increased focus on Self-defense. There will be an initial adjustment period which will most likely add to the
length of time between testing.
