RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Critical and alternative pedagogies in curriculum design and educational practices
Applied linguistics for the teaching of Spanish as a first language and English as a Second
Language History and sociology of social movements RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: 2016-2019 “Applied linguistics for the teaching of academic writing in
Spanish: an alternative model for track and field athletes.”

Project goal: Creation of an alternative educational method to teach
track and field athletes the use of nexus in complex sentences,
through embodied learning. The method was designed with data
collected by a socioeconomic questionnaire that was administered to
three track and field students. Each student drafted an introduction to
an academic essay as a transfer activity of the method. Analogical
comparisons were designed between the writing process and the
physical training for competitive running. Additionally, analogical
comparisons were made between warm-up exercises and Spanish
nexus used in complex sentences, based on Chomsky’s concept of
Generative Grammar. Student’s evaluation interview showed that
participants successfully learned the usage of nexus in complex
sentences and the benefits of applying the writing process to their
writing.
Tasks: Completion of IRB documentation. Educational method
design. Design of data collection instruments: learning logs,
assessment sheets, evaluation interview and the socioeconomic
questionnaire.
2015-Summer “My barrio in a map: alternative map learning with language,
math and culture”
Qualitative Experimental Research
Project goal: Design of a research-based board game to learn the
usage of maps with related mathematical operations. To create the
game, Puerto Rican and African American students from Humboldt
Park were interviewed about their community. Students were able to
successfully: measure distances amongst key community locations,
retrieve geometric knowledge and contextually apply operations with
rational numbers. Furthermore, analogical comparisons prepared
students to transfer the relationship of “parts and wholes” from
fractions to the cultural dynamics of their community and Spanish
vocabulary.
Tasks: Design board game out of reusable materials. Create other
data collection instruments: student interview and evaluation
interview.
2015- November “Rethinking the pedagogy of the oppressed: an analysis of the
University of Puerto Rico’s student activism from a Frerian
perspective”
Qualitative Content Analysis
Project goal: Content analysis of the transformation of the University
of Puerto Rico’s student movement throughout Puerto Rico’s
economic and political crisis. Interviews were conducted to student

activists from the Student Strike in 2010-2011 and the student
walkouts of 2014 and 2015. Using these interviews, newspaper
articles and official documents from the student movement an
analysis was conducted on how their activism is comparatively
related to Paolo Freire’s philosophy of liberating education as
proposed in “The Pedagogy of the Oppressed.”
Tasks: Completion of IRB documentation and training. Conduct
content analysis. Lead and design interview questions.
2015-April “An alternative college program for Secondary Spanish teachers
in Puerto Rico”
Research Proposal
Project goal: Curriculum design of an alternative college program for
secondary educators in Spanish. Curriculum consisted of five year
long interdisciplinary seminars and two courses: History and Culture,
Educational and Applied Psychology, Applied Neuroscience
Education, Performing Arts and Philosophy, Linguistics and
Literature, Research Methods and a Teaching Practicum. The
program’s main objective was to develop a generation of teachers that
use research skills to improve their teaching practices and foster
social advocacy and political awareness in community issues of social
transformation. The program also establishes a non-traditional process
of admission that consisted on an interview and/or portfolio, class
demonstration and a residential seminar with all candidates.
Tasks: Curriculum and seminar design
2015- March “Alternative lesson plan for the teaching of Spanish using applied
linguistics for high school students”
Research Project
Project Goal: Creation of the theoretical framework and practical
underpinnings for a Spanish lesson plan with Applied Linguistics in
mind. This research proposal included two lesson plans that aimed
students to understand the concepts of morphology and syntax by
creating a dictionary of their own teen vocabulary and analyzing
student dialogues. These activities explore students’ linguistic
conscience and performance, and their ability to do collaborative
work.
Tasks: Curriculum design and development of lesson plans.
2014-November “Analysis of a Middle School Curriculum using Alternative Education”
Research Project
Sanabria-Véaz, Karla Glizzette
5
Project goal: Development of a curriculum design using two
alternative models of education in Puerto Rico: “Nuestra Escuela” in
San Juan, Puerto Rico and a Recreational and Academic Summer
Camp for academically disadvantaged Middle school students.
Tasks: Curriculum design and observation of both models.
2014-April “Qualitative analysis of student participation and leadership in
the challenges and problems of student government.”
Mixed Design Research Project
Project goals: A comparative analysis on how the General Student
Council of the University of Puerto Rico and the Student Council of
the College of Education promote student participation in issues
regarding the University of Puerto Rico’s governance, student
admission and accessibility, state funding and quality education.
Tasks: Conduct interviews to council members. Questionnaire
Design. Content analysis of both student council’s policies and
official documents.
2013-November “Conscience, democracy and community”: projects and
reflections to increase student’s valorization to General Studies.
Research Project
Project goal: Content analysis of the history and educational
philosophy of the College of General Studies in Puerto Rico to
propose a new theoretical framework for the College inspired in
transdisciplinarity. This curricular revision included the creation of a
Social Improvement Lab for action-based research.
Tasks: Analysis of the structure of Institutes or Social Labs in Action
Research among Latin America and the Caribbean. Creation of a
student questionnaire about their opinions and values of the General
Studies Curriculum at the University of Puerto Rico.
2013-Summer “Recreational learning alternatives to implement in a traditional
middle school curriculum”:
Qualitative Research Project
Project goal: Evaluation of the viability of incorporating recreational
and academic activities to a middle school summer camp in Carolina,
Puerto Rico. The camp’s aim was to prepare low income and
academically disadvantage students in language and math skills. This
study proposed alternative approaches to teach these skills.
Tasks: IRB authorization paperwork, curriculum design, qualitative
