their dreams. And our students have responded to this support with a magnificent

achievement: 100 percent graduated; 100 percent were accepted into college and have ongoing success. They have become our current students’ role models.

Our committed staff and teachers work morning to night and beyond to provide what our students need. To them, it is truly a ministry.

My first year at San Miguel has been incredible as I watch our community consistently give time, talent and treasures to allow our students the opportunity to succeed. I am truly awe-inspired. We are grateful for your generosity and thank you for your commitment to education.

Blessings,

Leslie Shultz-Crist, President, San Miguel High School

I’m very excited by what our community has achieved this year. The incredible generosity of Angel Charity for Children, Jim and Vicki Click, the Click Family Foundation and many other generous donors will allow us to pay off our mortgage about 10 months ahead of schedule. Their commitment says how deeply they care about the children in our community.

Our Corporate Internship Program partners have been tremendous in this economy. Some have stayed with us when their own businesses experienced a downturn. We have so many renewing and new partners. These partnerships and gifts add so much beyond finances. They encourage our students and let them see that people in our community believe in them and are willing to come forward to help them achieve

TOGETHER WE GIVE OUR STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUCCEED

Many of our business partners hire San Miguel students to work through the summer. Our students’ workplace supervisors depend on them to accomplish the daily workload.

Advanced Ceramics President, Steve Turcotte, is opening students’ eyes to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), fields that desperately need workers.

By exposing CIP students to the manufacturing of composites and composite materials for the aerospace industry, “we have instilled some interest in future careers in STEM fields,” Turcotte says.

The 16 students he’s sponsored have worked from filing financials to making the high-tech materials. He sees a lot of dedication, effort and talent. Turcotte has hired two graduates following their CIP assignments.

This program is a well run program. The schedules are clear and easy to read. The communication is very good between the administration and partners. It is evident that the students receive instruction and guidance prior to coming into the workplace.

“We get a chance to get a look and know (their) qualifications,” he says. “We knew exactly what we had.”

He says he participates in CIP because he values his “wonderful” education in Catholic schools and “strongly supports” San Miguel High School’s education philosophy that connects students with local companies.

“If they’re not exposed to different elements of the world, they’re never going to be interested in it.”

We LOVE being a partner and we LOVE having the students!

It’s amazing how well prepared the students are for the workplace.

Reyna is graduating, but I clicked the button to ‘assign to us again’ because she has been a joy to work with. We will miss her.

MARCELA SUAREZ, CLASS OF 2011

Three times I have been thrown in dee p water. Each time I have emerged learning an important lesson.

I transferred from Rincon High to San Miguel halfway into my sophomore year. Little did I know the great benefits that would arise. Since I was a little girl I told my mom that I would graduate from a competitive university and that I was going to break the cycle and be a first generation college graduate. Leaving Rincon, leaving my friends and everything that I knew, made me more ambitious to achieve that goal. The journey to find out who I was wasn’t easy. Three times I have been thrown in deep water. Each time I have emerged learning an important lesson.

The briefest deep water dip happened when I was white river

rafting in Switzerland as part of the People to People ambassador program. The adrenaline and thrill made the four degree water bearable. That was, until I fell in.

I attempted to swim back to the raft as the currents swept me away. The water was so cold and it felt as though it was grinding the life out of my lungs. As much as I tried, I could not emerge from the water alone. Had it not been for my friend pulling me out, I do not know what would have happened. That day, life taught me one of its most important lessons. You cannot always find success on your own Sometimes you are going to need help and there’s nothing wrong with that.

In August 2009, San Miguel set me up for an unexpected learning experience; my second deep water experience. My internship at a molecular cardiovascular research lab at the University of Arizona forever changed my life. I was thrown into an environment where the stakes were high and where everyone spoke a different, scientific language that I did not understand. This experience not only taught me cell biology, but a

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they must decide what they want for their future. I never thought my time would come so soon.

life lesson that I will never forget. My whole life I have been

confident. Placed into a lab with no experience and no knowledge, by far has been the most frustrating thing I have ever gone through, but by far my greatest achievement. Not being afraid to jump in head first and soaking up lab concepts and protocols, gave me the confidence that I now have.

The third experience, the deepest, darkest waters in which I have been swimming my entire life, has definitely been the hardest to overcome. Prospering in a society where drugs and alcohol are in abundance is the challenge I come face to face with every day. Fighting off peer pressure and staying true to myself is what I live for. Knowing that living in the moment and following my peers will lead to destruction, and knowing that messing up now will deteriorate my future, is what keeps me strong. Overcoming every impediment, every barrier that comes my way, is a reassurance that I am doing the right thing; that I am reaching my dreams and working for that diploma in my hand.

San Miguel offers students a comprehensive co-curricular program that reinforces Catholic, Lasallian core principals and the ultimate goal that every student graduate from college and become a productive, caring and giving member of our society.

Available athletics include volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, cross country, golf and cheer. Students may join organizations such as Praise Band, Campus Ministry, Lasallian Youth, Student Life, Student Ambassadors, Yearbook and Club Bahay Pag-asa. Through these organizations, members take part in both service and educational projects ranging from meal preparation for the homeless to food drives and social justice programs.

Students also enrolled in more than 25 summer programs on college campuses throughout the country. The goal of these programs is both learning and leadership, with preparation for the challenges students will face in college. At San Miguel, students are not asked if they want to go to college – rather, they are asked which college they wish to attend.
