The low laying temporary wooden bridge, connecting the twin towns ofSanta Elena and San Ignacio, was built several years ago as a temporarycrossing while the main Hawksworth Bridge was undergoing majorrepairs. Today this bridge has evolved into anything but temporary. In fact it is of such vital importance to transportation in the west thatwhen it was out of commission for almost three weeks during the greatfloods of October 2008, the motoring public was severely inconvenienced. There were long lines of traffic on both sides of the Macal River whenthe Hawksworth Bridge was pressed into providing 2 way service. The many years of service has taken its toll on the low layingtemporary bridge. The Ministry of Works is now frequently replacingplanks and repairing the carriage way; However, the subsurface, especially some of the wooden pillars supporting the structure, havedeteriorated to the point of creating a hazardous condition. To the unsuspecting motorist who drives over the surface, all appears tobe well and fine; However, to the swimmer who recreates in the watersof the Macal River near the bridge, the deterioration is real and appearsto be an accident just waiting to happen. Except on those rear occasions when the Hawksworth Bridge is pressedinto emergency two-way operation, the low laying temporary woodenbridge is used as a crossing for all forms of vehicular and pedestriantraffic. It bears the weight of loaded petroleum carriers and cement cargotrucks while the subsurface continues to deteriorate with every passingday. Having full charge of the structure as it forms part of the nationalnetwork of roads, the Ministry of Works, no doubt is aware of thesituation. The question therefore is: When will this situation be rectifiedor are we waiting for a major accident to happen?

Education Week 2009 (May10-16, 2009) is being heldunder the theme: “BetterSchools, Better Citizens, BetterBelize—whatever it takes: It’sEverybody’s Business” In keep-ing with a tradition started inEducation Week 2008, today onthe KREM Wake Up BelizeMorning Show the Minister ofEducation, Hon. Patrick Faber, bestowed the second annualSpirit of Ubuntu Award on adeserving citizen.

This year’s honoree is Joel‘Dara’ Robinson. Even withminimal personal resources andhumble personality, Mr.Robinson has taken it uponhimself to help children withmeals at two schools and istrying to expand to otherschools. What is remarkable when youspeak to Mr. Robinson is hisgenuine concern for our youngpeople and for our society. He is not doing this for

recognition, nor is it merelyabout trying to ensure that otherchildren would not have thesame experience he had as achild of not having enough to eatat home. No, he has a genuine concernfor his fellow men and women/brothers and sisters. He truly embodies the Spirit ofUbuntu…he is truly showing hishumanness through his concernand love for others. He is not only helping to makebetter schools, but he is at thesame time being a better citizenand helping to create a betterBelize. He is truly an example wemust all follow and this is thekind of volunteerism andpatriotism that we shouldinspire in all Belizeans.

Ubuntu describes an Africanphilosophy which, when roughlytranslated, means ‘I am becauseWe are.’ It speaks to a sense ofcommunity and a solidarity withother human beings—yourfellow men and women, brothers and sisters. It speaks to a recognition thatone’s humanity is intricatelybound up in that of others. In short, one can only fulfillone’s humanity through otherhuman beings. It’s therealization then we diminishothers, in whatever way, wediminish ourselves. When wethink of others as being lesshuman, you are in fact being lesshuman yourself. However, when we see the value in otherpeople…when we live for eachother…when we show concernfor our fellow human beings weare being most human.
