History of San Gorgonio High School

San Gorgonio High School first opened its doors in 1965 under the leadership of Principal George E. Lucas. Situated at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, San Gorgonio is named after Mt. San Gorgonio, which reaches higher than any other peak in Southern California. San Gorgonio High School is a comprehensive high school in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. The school motto, “Expect Excellence - Everyone, Everywhere, Every Time,” was developed in the 2002-03 school year and is the inspiration toward reaching the highest limits of educational excellence. We are the Spartans and proudly wear Columbian blue and black. The school gained some notoriety when the 1,600-meter girls' relay team from San Gorgonio High set a U.S. scholastic record in 1979. The summary looked like a typographical error: 3:44.1 (Howard-Howard-Howard-Howard) but neither the remarkable time nor the names were wrong. It was instead a breakthrough by what could be called the first and the fastest family of U.S. women's track—the Howard sisters: Artra, 18, Sherri, 17, Tina, 16, and Denean, 15.

Alma Mater

O’ San Gorgonio High School,

we raise our song to thee The mountains standing ‘round us,

repeat the melody The blue of far-flung distance In which your future stands

The black of strength and boldness, the white of purity.

Fulfillment of your future lies in us and with pride

We’ll go to higher achievements in places far and wide.

Our Alma Mater, to thee our pledge of truest loyalty

And ever upward, onward, your mem’ry at our side.

School Colors

Blue, black and white are San Gorgonio High School’s colors. On occasion, “spirit days” will be held. On these days, students and staff are encouraged to wear school colors to demonstrate pride in the school, to promote spirit and to support athletic teams.

Yearbook The Summit Yearbook is sold throughout the year and is distributed around the last week of school. Ordering information is given out at the new student orientation, open house, and on the school’s website. Announcements are made throughout the school year. Contact our yearbook advisor for more information.

Classroom Passes Teachers are asked not to issue restroom passes during the first fifteen minutes and last fifteen minutes of class, or during 5th period. Students are expected to take care of personal needs before coming to class. Students do have time to use the restrooms during passing period. Vest passes to the restroom during class time should only be given for emergencies. It is not unreasonable for teachers to expect a student who makes continual requests to use the restroom to provide a medical excuse. Students who are out of class without a vest pass will be stopped by security and sent to class or to see their vice principal.

Student Council San Gorgonio students are eligible to participate in Student Council as class representatives. Student Council is a rewarding experience and helps students develop leadership skills. Student Council members are required to help plan and implement school activities, as well as perform community service. Students may earn credits by successful participation and completion of minimum attendance and scholarship requirements. Interested students should see the ASB Director. No fifth-year seniors can participate in student council.

ASB Cards The ASB Card cost is only $50 (Freshmen receive a special discount price of only $25) and will return huge savings throughout the school year. All regular season league home and away football, basketball, and wrestling events are free of charge with an ASB Card (savings of $3-$5 per game). Admission to the Football Homecoming dance is free ($20 savings), and the following discounts are included: Winter Semi-Formal Dance ($15); Prom ($25); and Grad Nite ($10). Admission to school plays and all ASB sponsored activities will be discounted. There are discounts offered at many local businesses for ASB Card holders. Also, athletes purchasing an ASB Card will not have to pay for any patches or letters earned during their season. As you can tell, the ASB Card will more than pay for itself with regular use. Students can buy their ASB card at the Finance Office.

Campus Clubs

School clubs at San Gorgonio High School are organized for the purpose of service to the school, the community and personal growth of its members. Students who become involved in club activities will obtain recognition and have the opportunity to develop their leadership potential in a positive atmosphere. Students are encouraged to expand their experiences by joining clubs at San Gorgonio High School and must have parental permission. Clubs meet at lunchtime and/or after school. Students interested in joining a club or organization should contact the sponsor of the group or the ASB Director in D-1. It is to your advantage to participate in the organization in which you are interested. New clubs are welcome. If you would like to organize a new club, check with a vice principal to obtain the procedures to follow.

Make-Up Work If a student is truant from school, the teacher is not obligated to permit him/her to make up any work. The final decision is up to the teacher. A student who misses because of an excused absence, authorized extra-curricular activity or suspension must be given an opportunity to make up work. It is the responsibility of the student to take the initiative to request make-up work from his/her teachers. It is not up to the teacher to follow up on missing assignments due to a student’s absence. Assignments for students who are ill for more than five days may be requested by calling the Counseling Office. Please allow at least 24 hours for the teachers to be contacted and then to respond. A parent/guardian or friend may pick up the assignments.

Flowers / Balloons Students may NOT receive flowers, balloons, singing telegrams or similar personal gifts at school because of the disruption of the educational process created by such items.

Infant/Toddler Center If you are interested in Infant/Toddler Center services, please contact the Child Development Program Office at (909) 388-6307.

Completing the Season

The standard expectation for all SGHS student-athletes is that they complete any sport they start, including through CIF playoffs. If a student chooses to quit a sport or is removed from the sport prior to the end of the season (including CIF playoffs), they will not be allowed to participate with another sport until their previous sport is finished unless there are extenuating circumstances agreed upon by all coaches involved and site administration.
