There’s a reason our
university’s motto is
“Experientia Docet,”or experience teaches.
At San Francisco State University, we give our graduate students the practical, hands-on experience they need to succeed in their degree program and career. Our faculty not only love to teach, they are masters in their own fields. And the Bay Area offers our students endless opportunities to put their passion into action at large multinational corporations, high-tech firms, research laboratories, nonprofit organizations, health care institutions and government agencies.
Pioneering Faculty and Research Our faculty are active scholars engaged in vital research and creative endeavors that are changing the way we understand our world. Projects undertaken by our faculty are funded by grants and contracts from the most competitive government and private agencies.
Kaz Okada, Associate Professor, Computer Science
Kazunori Okada, an associate professor of computer science (pictured above), and Xiaorong Zhang, assistant professor of engineering, have embarked on a project to develop a prosthetic arm that better understands and interprets the complex electromyogram (EMG) signals necessary for elaborate arm, wrist, hand and finger movements. EMG is a measure of
electrical voltage generated from muscle contractions and contains information about the neural signals sent from the spinal cord to control the muscles.
The project is the first to receive funding from the Ken Fong Translational Research Fund, which was established through a $5 million donation to support interdisciplinary research projects. The fund has backed Okada and Zhang’s venture with a $20,000 grant.
Joshua Singer, Associate Professor, Visual Communication Design
Joshua Singer’s work examines and explores intersections of design practice, design research, theories of design, the urban landscape and experimental and critical methodologies. His work is exhibited in “Project Anywhere”, a global blind peer-reviewed exhibition program dedicated to promoting art and artistic research.
