DESTINATION HIGHLIGHT Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge means traffic and a toll. But on a bike, you can pedal across its 8,981-foot span for free. Biking across one of the longest suspension bridges in the world is something you'll never forget.

FAMILY With an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and a four-story rainforest all under one roof, the California Academy of Sciences is a stunning architectural achievement with hundreds of unique exhibits and nearly 40,000 live animals. At this multifaceted scientific institution, there is never a dull moment and an afternoon here makes for a fun, educational and interactive family activity.

THINGS TO DOROMANTIC Begin your evening with an early dinner at Acquerello, a contemporary French restaurant that will leave you completely satisfied and feeling a bit spoiled. Next, head to the San Francisco Opera, one of the city’s cultural icons, to take in one of the classics. Afterwards, if you’re feeling up to it, head to the Starlight Room to dance the night away while overlooking the sparkling city below.

ADVENTURE For the true adrenaline junkie, we recommend a tandem hang gliding lesson at For Funston. Considered one of the top locations for hang gliding in the entire country and during a session you will fly high above the sandy bluffs and Pacific Ocean.

For a more toned-downed view of the Bay Area, we recommend a 30-minute seaplane tour for two.

NATURE Spanning 1,017 acres, the Golden Gate Park is an incredibly beautiful urban oasis that transports you out of the city and into nature. Made up a variety of gardens, meadows, groves, lakes and even a Bison Paddock, the activities here can include picnics, concerts, museum visits, carousel rides, frisbee golf, flower exhibitions, Segway tours, fishing, cliff-side walking trails and more.

LOCAL An afternoon in a quintessential San Francisco neighborhood is guaranteed to give you a glimpse at the San Francisco vernacular. Hayes Valley is one of our top picks–brimming with art galleries, boutique shops showcasing local designers and artists as well as hip eateries and fine-dining establishments dotted throughout.

DC’s TIP: Stop by Timbuk2, the retailer attributed to starting the messenger bag trend, where you can customize your own bag and have it delivered to your home within seven to 10 days.

DAY TRIP In just under two hours you find yourself in the fun and charming area of Santa Cruz. Enjoy the day strolling along the boardwalk, taking in the California sun and filling your car with shopping bags from the numerous boutiques and antique gems. Afterwards, venture a few more miles south to Capitola, one of the most delightful towns on the coast. The food here is wonderful and you would be hard pressed to find a better spot to take in the sunset. Grab a bite at one of the beachfront restaurants and then stroll into town for a sweet ice cream treat.
