Afloat on the bay waters are six ships, their white hulls and yellow superstructures brightened by sunlight piercing the cloud strewn sky. Above it all, the red and yellow shield holding the P of Portola harks back to the city’s earliest days as an outpost of the Spanish crown. Too bad that so few members showed upto take advantage of the ample supply of parkingspaces and new old stuff at the Italo-AmericanMuseum rummage sale and the SF Library booksale—not to mention the club tables.Only seventeen members signed in at the meet-ing, a small but select group. Cards were broughtfor sale or trade by Nancy Tucker, Shirley Tuten,Lew Baer, Joseph Jaynes, and Albert Muller.We were called to order by Vice President BobBowen.Announcements: Ted Miles told of the newly reno-vated Maritime Museum Visitor Center at Hydeand Jefferson—which will open later this weekwith free admission.Joseph Jaynes reminded us of the Santa Cruz Showon September 6 and 7 and handed out free passesfor all club members.

sent along his business card that is like a minia-ture postcard; she also showed a match book post-card from a hospital and two reference books onDetroits and publisher trademarks. … JosephJaynes collects gas stations among other topics,and he, like all of us, is always looking for thequintessential card; he showed us his: the StinkerGas station in Wells, Nevada.John Freeman showed a 1911 card with a portraitof a woman in ostrich plumes with the caption“Evelyn will be waiting for you at the Palace Ho-tel”; it was an advertising card for a Western Re-gional Lumberman’s meeting he had bought oneBay as a prostitution card. John also showed a

card we [at leastwe used to] seefrequently ofthe Greater SanFrancisco alle-gory, a femalefigure withsword andcloud above atopographicalview of the Baybelow. “What isit?” he askedand then an-swered. Thecard, shownhere, fits into a

political movement of 1911. The Greater San Fran-cisco Association was aware of how Los Angeleswas growing wildly and wanted to see the sameexpansion up here. It began a movement to takeover San Mateo County—mainly for its CrystalSprings water and reservoir—and align with

Alameda and Oakland as well. The card, John toldus, represents a ballot initiative of 1912. “GreaterSan Francisco” failed at the polls.

CAPTAIN JACK GLICKENYes, we’ve seen Cap’n Jack long before he ap-

peared on thecover of thisyear’s roster.The 1930s wasJack’s grandestdecade. In 1934and ’35 he waschief of police atthe Midget Vil-lage at thePanama-Califor-nia InternationalExposition in SanDiego, and inNew York the 32inch 65 poundermarried all 400

pounds of Mildred Monte. He spent much of 1938in Hollywood working on a film that was to re-ceive lasting worldwide acclaim. Jack was one ofthe 120 uncredited Munchkins in The Wizard ofOz. 1939 was perhaps his greatest year when thefilm was released and he reprised his role as po-lice chief of the Midget Village but this time atthe GGIE on Treasure Island in the middle of SanFrancisco Bay. Here he could be seen along withthe Headless Girl, an octopus wrestler, and nakedladies in cowboy boots. —Lew

Rudy Behlmer worked in a theater* in San Fran-cisco when he was a high school student and sothe category is one of his favorites. This month hesent a circa 1920 night view of Market Street withtwo theaters, Pantages and the Empire.

“The Pantages,” Rudy’s notes read, “opened at theend of December 1911 and stayed until 1926 atthat location. Then the theater was converted intoretail space. The Empress opened on December 4,1910 under the direction of Sid Grauman as avaudeville house. Later it became a movie theatercalled the St. Francis. Could it still be there?”Sid Grauman was a San Francisco wunderkindwho got his start here and made his mark else-where. The Bijou Dream web site tells of how hisintroduction to movies at the Cinemagraph The-atre in San Francisco inspired him to open his firsttwo theaters, the Unique and the Lyceum, here.Both were lost in the ’ought-six earthquake andfire. A dauntless promoter, Grauman then boughta big top tent with pews to seat 3,000 from an evan-gelist and was soon welcoming crowds of 10,000a day to his theater where “nothing could fall on

you but canvas.” He expanded his empire with newtheaters in the Bay Area, including the Empressand Grauman’s Imperial, the first large theater builtexclusively for movies. It was at the Empress in1910 that he first met Charlie Chaplin. In 1917 hesold his San Francisco properties and relocated toLos Angeles, where the following year he openedhis Million Dollar Theatre.A card I recently came across is a Pacific NoveltyCo. black and white of the California Theatre, next

door to theHumboldt Bankbuilding at thecorner of 4th andMarket. The au-tos on the streetmake it a ’20sview with 1941handwritten onthe back. Thebuilding was de-molished or hasbeen drasticallyremodeled intothe office build-ing that now oc-cupies the site. I

could find no information about it other than theweb site of a woman who occasionally plays itsorgan—a 1917 Wurlitzer—that is now in a pri-vate home in Southern California. —Lew

When Queen Virgilia of the Portola Fes-tival issued her Proclamation of Plea-sure just before the opening in October

1909, she said “the festival has twofold signifi-cance, not only to celebrate the discovery of SanFrancisco Bay by Don Gaspar de Portola, but itmarks San Francisco’s renaissance from ruin.” Inhistorical retrospect, Queen Virgilia’s list shouldhave more items of significance. The Portola Fes-tival demonstrated to the world that San Franciscohad the ability to sponsor a major civic event andit bolstered the city’s case for hosting the PanamaPacific International Exposition in 1915. It alsoserved to engender respect for the Asian popula-tion, becoming the first major civic event enthusi-astically supported by both the Chinese and Japa-nese communities. This first Portola Festival wasa wildly successful five-day party, with an inno-cence and revelry never before seen in the historyof San Francisco.One of the first orders of business in preparationfor the 1909 Festival was to decide on a themethat would encourage activities, establish eventcolors and provide a general structure. Gaspar dePortola’s “discovery” of San Francisco Bay in 1769was selected as the theme. It was a perfect com-pliment to the romanticized Mission period fad ofthe times. During the spring and summer of 1909,

various discovery postcards were issued to publi-cize the five-day Portola Festival. The officialposter and postcard image was chosen, by artist’scompetition in June, from a painting by RandallW. Borough. The picture was described as depict-ing “a girl of the Spanish type seen dancing withall the abandon of the race, her eyes a-sparkle withthe excitement of the moment, her red lips parted,roses in her hair, in her hands and strewn aroundher—the very essence of youthful vitality. In thebackground is the tower of the ferry building andthe structures of the ‘new’ city, and beyond lie themountains.” The theme honored a Spaniard butpresented a problem of pronunciation. Was it tobe Por-TOE-la or Por-toe-LA? The San FranciscoCall reported that Portola committee memberJames Rolph gave a speech to the Chamber ofCommerce the week preceding the opening inwhich he “varied the accent all along thekeyboard.” Linguists andscholars were consultedand it was unanimouslyagreed that pronunciation“should be a crescendo,ending with a crash onthe LA.”The backers of the 1909 Portola Festival had otheragendas besides providing a site for a big party.San Francisco before the earthquake had been amajor tourist destination. Its economy was diver-sified with imports from Asian and other Pacificrim countries, and exports of California’s huge ag-ricultural bounty. It was important to demonstrateto the rest of the world that San Francisco was anexciting destination and to provide confidence tobusinessmen that the city could handle every com-mercial challenge. A lot was riding on the successof this festival.

The April 18,1906 earthquake and

resulting three days of fireprofoundly changed SanFrancisco. Almost foursquare miles, nearly 500blocks of commercial and

residential property, were de-stroyed. Many San Franciscans fledto neighboring communities, butthose who remainedfaced the indignity

of food lines and tem-porary shelter. Residentswhose homes were sparedfrom fire endured weeks ormonths cooking in the streetwhile waiting for an inspectorto check the condition of theirhomes’ chimneys. The local

press—obsessed by governmentalcorruption, crippling labor strikesand Asian-bashing—did not domuch to strengthen the residents’morale. For over three years SanFranciscans lived through thegrime and dust of rebuilding thecity. Downtown was a constructionsite with all the noise and grit thatentails. Gradually, salvageablebuildings were restored and new buildings wereerected. By 1909 commercial and retail businesseswere moving back downtown from their tempo-rary locations on Van Ness Avenue or FillmoreStreet. The people who had endured the hardshipsof those three years deserved a reward. They werejustifiably proud of their new city and anxious to

show off theirachievement. SanFranciscans were readyto celebrate.Charles C. Moore, a leadingSan Francisco businessman,was sent by the festival com-mittee to Europe to secure sup-port for the Festival. Armedwith a portfolio of before and

after photos, andexuding charm andenthusiasm, he wasable to get promises from theBritish, Dutch, Germans andItalians to send warships toparticipate in the Portola Fes-tival. These were major com-mitments and raised the levelof the festival to internationalstatus. With the addition of Japa-nese and American warships thenaval presence in San FranciscoBay was most dramatic. On shore,naval officers and enlisted menwould become vital players in thefestival. Moore’s dip-lomatic skills werehighly praisedand within

months after the close of thePortola Festival he was head-ing the Panama Pacific Inter-national Exposition com-mission.By opening day, October 19th,San Francisco was transformed

into a carnival mid-way from the FerryBuilding out into theneighborhoods. Indaylight San Fran-cisco was a mass ofred and yellow, theCatalonian colors ofPortola. Banners,bunting and flagsdraped buildingsand stretched acrossmajor streets. Withnightfall more than amillion lights illumi-nated downtown,the arched intersec-

tions of Fillmore Street and the retail section ofMission Street. The Ferry Building, St. Francis Ho-tel, Humboldt Savings Bank and other major build-ings were outlined in lights. All along MarketStreet, from the Ferry Building to the Van NessAvenue intersection, lights were strung curb to curbevery forty feet. The most spectacular lighting dis-play was at the intersection of Market and ThirdStreets where 25,000 colored lights were sus-pended to form a gigantic bell. In the harbor wereseventeen warships also outlined with lights. Theentire north end of the peninsula was an awesomedisplay of color by day and lights by night.Away from the center of downtown, the Portola

Festival held sporting events in Golden Gate Park.Championship matches were played at the tenniscourts. Further out, at the Stadium (now calledPolo Fields) were track and field competitions,football, rugby and lacrosse matches. There wereswimming races held at Spreckels Lake. In theIngleside area, a major golf tournament was heldat the San Francisco Country Club, drawing someof the leading professional and amateur golfers inthe country.For five days festivities of joy and spectaclereigned. There were two days of huge parades withmarching military and fraternal units, bands, andfloats on Market Street. A formal dress ball and amasked ball were featured on two of the evenings.An automobile parade with 1,600 decorated ve-hicles wound the lengths of Van Ness Avenue andMarket Street. In Oakland 200,000 people cheeredauto racers as they sped around a 250 mile coursethat circled from Melrose to Hayward and back.Every evening of the festival there were fireworksdisplays in Union Square and a tightrope walkerhigh above Third and Market Streets to awe thecrowds. Over the course of five days 75,000 visi-tors took launches out to tour the warships, withthe Japanese vessel leading in popularity. The cul-mination of the festival was called the HistoricPageant with floats moving along Market Streetdepicting historical events, surrounded by cos-tumed marchers. Along with the moving floats,were seven immense stationary floats or tableaux.

The Chinese communityused the Portola Festival as

a “coming out” after years of iso-lation. Chinatown had been re-built after the earthquake withtourism in mind. In the festival theChinese introduced such spec-tacular floats, lion dancers anddragons, that a rear admiral com-mented he’d never seen theirequal in all his years in Asian

ports. Immediate interest was expressed in mak-ing the Portola Festival an annual event, like MardiGras in New Orleans or the Mummers Parade inPhiladelphia. The press also editorialized aboutSan Francisco having demonstrated to the worldthat it was ready to host a world’s fair by 1913, tocelebrate the anticipated completion of the PanamaCanal in that year.The Portola Festival did not become an annualevent. The following year, the festival was co-opted by the sixtieth anniversary of AdmissionDay. It was restaged in 1913, tying it with Balboa’sdiscovery of the Pacific Ocean in 1513. In 1948,the third Portola Festival was held in San Fran-cisco to stimulate post-World War II business.Neither of these events approached the vitality andlavishness of the original celebration. Each was 46 feet long,mounted on rail flatcars andweighed more than 60 tons. Start-ing at the Ferry Building Plaza,these floats were stationed abouttwo blocks apart along MarketStreet. All were decked in lightsand featured bands and spacearound them for dancing. Many ofthese tableaux had cascades ofreal water to dazzle the crowds.All week long San Francisco resembled MardiGras, but more so on the last night of the festival.Most of the revelers wore costumes, and confetticovered them like a snowstorm. Besides what wasthrown by hand, there was a volcano float thatspewed out confetti.After the close of the festival, when the organiz-ing committee and the press evaluated the Portolaweek, it was rated an unqualified success. Busi-nessmen were effusive in their praise as they cal-culated that the festival had brought over a mil-lion visitors to San Francisco who had spent $1.5million. There had been an unprecedented spirit

of cooperationfrom all seg-ments of thecommunity, butparticular notewas made of theAsians. Afteryears of vilifyingAsians, the SanFrancisco presspraised the Im-perial navy andthe beauty of thespecial cherryblossoms it hadbrought for theJapanese float.

PLANS for the club’s 2004 cal-endar are moving apace. JimStaley, its creator, printer andpublisher, has enlisted a couple

of helpers this year, and Darlene Thorne has takenher job seriously. She’s been calling many of usclubsters wanting to know if we’d like to take part.Has she called you? If not pick up the phone anddial 408 253-2145 to let her know on how manypages or parts thereof you would like to see cardsfrom your collection. Like last year, the calendarwill be in full color on heavy paper and can haveup to four cards per page. You can take a full pagefor yourself or share it with other clubsters. Eachpage costs $40 and includes four copies of thecompleted calendar. Four horizontal postcards,three verticals, or one giant horizontal make ideallayouts. Our heartiest congratu-lations go to the no longer newlyweds! I’mtempted to wish them another fifty years together,but I’m not sure Helen could endure living with apostcard collector for a full century.SANDI AND LYNN MAACK emailed in recently to letus know that KQED Channel 9 twice showed themovie The Plunge; Time Laps Through Historyabout the Richmond Natatorium, its history andthe efforts to save it. Most of the pictures in thefilm that illustrate the history of Richmond andthe era of the Plunge’s greatest popularity, comefrom the Maacks’ collection of Richmondabilia,which includes more than 400 postcards of theearly town. They were acknowledged, but the

credits flew so fast that Sandi’s sure no one but hernoticed. “It’s a great movie,” she writes, “whichwe hope they will show again... and again.”DISNDAT: The Sonoma County Fair again includedpostcard collections in its competitively judgedexhibits. Three boards were entered. The secondand third place winners were beginning amateurefforts, but the blue ribbon went to a first class pro-fessional display on the “Resorts of Cazadero.”George E. Guilly used a mix of exceptional vin-tage cards to show the summertime pleasures ofthe rainiest spot in Sonoma County. Congratz! …The American Flag exhibit will continue throughthe end of this month at the Officers’ Club in thePresidio. If red, white, and blue are your favoritecolors you will love this show even though it in-cludes only a few postcards. See how our nationalbanner evolved from the Revolution, through wars,to the moon and how it survived the attacks of nine-eleven. Admission is free, but you’ll want to stopin the book shop for a postcard or two. … Alsofree is the entry fee for club members at the newSunnyvale show. ceased sisters had mailed from Florida in 1952. Ithad its original 2¢ stamp and cancel and an 11¢stamp cancelled in 1999. The question for thepostal authorities is how did it arrive with only13¢ postage when the rate was 20¢. The story wasalso reported in Hong Kong, Melbourne and Maltanewspapers except they had Ms. Forget residingin Rawalpindi, India.Ed Clausen created this unmailable postcard onhis word processor to focus our attention on oneof Marcel Proust’s more focused observations:
