PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Paul Winchester
A BIG Thank You, to Selena Forman and crew, for putting on a great Banquet last month. I
should have listened to her when she told me before the Banquet to practice up on the
“Charleston”. I did not do well touching the floor. I hope everyone had a good time.
Dave Johnson and team did a superb job keeping the Club in order so there are not loose ends to
finish up this year. I propose we spend the year enjoying our Model A Fords at parades, events,
and Tours.
I am planning on going to the MAFCA Convention in Loveland Colorado held June 19th through 24th, except for a
little hot and dry desert in California and Nevada it is a nice drive. Their web site is http://milehighcountry2016.org/
and they are now accepting registrations. If you are driving an RV they have parking on site (only electric hook up)
or there are RV parks nearby. We have thirteen family’s interested in going, now is the time to make your lodging
reservations, and register for seminars etc.
Stan and Judy Boyer are putting together great Tours, I encourage everyone who can, to join in on the fun, and come
to a Tour.
Our next meeting is Friday February 12th at the usual place (San Carlos Rec Center, 6445 Lake Badin Ave. San
Diego.) come on out and see what Dave Francis has for us in the Ways and Means raffle, and most interesting, has
our new leader been paying close attention to previous meetings to know what to do at his first real meeting?

TOURS: Stan Boyer
MARSTON HOURSE TOUR: Saturday, January 30, 2016 Happy New Year “Club”! Judy and I appreciate the great response and turn-out
(51 people and 22 “A‘s“---wow!) for the 1st tour of 2016, the Marston House.
We met at the Aerospace Museum parking lot, drove through Balboa Park and
across the Laurel Street Bridge on our way to the Marston House. We parked our
“A’s” in front of the house then toured it with the help of docents in groups of
about 15 people. It was a beautiful craftsman style home that was built for George and Anna Marston in 1905. Two
floors were open for us to see. Topping off the tour was a wave and smile from Peg Marston (married to George and
Anna Marston’s grandson and Ann Marston (great-granddaughter of George and Anna) standing at the side of the old
carriage house (now store). Afterwards we drove to Banker’s Hill where many of us crossed over and back on the
Spruce Street Suspension Bridge. Also, those who brought a book exchanged it for another one at the “Free Li-
brary”. Then 34 of us went to the Chicken Pie Shop on El Cajon Blvd. for a nice lunch.
Mileage goes to: Stan & Mary Baker, Ray Beardslee, Arlyn & Nayola Bieber,
Richard & Janet Books, Bob & Jeanette Bowie, Stan & Judy Boyer, Michael &
Joan Dainer, Walter & Roxy Faust, Dave & Betsy Johnson, Mike & Robin Judd,
Reen Kotas, Steve & Nancy Lovell, Clyde Marion , Don & Joan Minnick,
Chuck Niemeyer, Vic & Joyce Patterson, Ron & Joyce Peterson (+1 ), Rich &
JoBeth Stelzer, Bud & Judy Swartwood, Jim & Jerriann Taber, Mark William-
son (+ 3 ), Paul & Patty Winchester (+ 1). Participation points go to: Valarie
Basham, Fred Crone, Ed Poffinberger, Paul Hastie and Bob & Carol Weckman.
First time tour with our club: None
UPCOMING TOUR: Saturday, February 20, 2016 We will be taking a docent guided tour of the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park (there is a charge for the tour of $5
per person) followed by lunch at the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum. Both places are located in Carlsbad. We
will meet at the Toy’s-R-Us parking lot located at 1240 W. Morena Blvd. at 8:15a.m. and depart at 8:30 a.m. for a
10 a.m. tour. (Some of you may remember Leo Carrillo who played the role of Poncho in the Cisco Kid series on
TV in the early1950’s). We will get to see inside the hacienda rooms which are not furnished and only open on a do-
cent tour. There is a bit of walking but a golf cart/driver is available to carry up to 5 people from the parking lot to the
hacienda and back if needed. There are benches to sit on and enjoy the scenery and peacocks. Also, there is a very
informative 10 minute video about Leo Carrillo’s life and the ranch at the information center at no cost. Note that for
insurance reasons the ranch is closed if it is raining hard so we’ll have to reschedule this tour and the lunch for an-
other time if it is. Following the tour we will go to lunch at the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum near Palomar Air-
port Road and I-15. The lunch menu looks great and has reasonable prices. The museum inside displays artifacts and
original documents from the Revolutionary War period. There is a very nice book store inside as well. A sign-up
sheet will be passed around at the February 12th general meeting. Sign up then or give Stan or Judy Boyer a call at
(619) 224-5386 to put you on the list.
PARADES & Car Displays: Jim Taber
2016 is here already and I am looking forward to a successful year as the San Diego Model A
Club participates in local parades and car displays. As Events are scheduled I will keep you
informed. Please mark your personal calendar and plan to join in the adventure.
The first event for 2016 is the Lakeside Parade on April 23 Details to come.
———————————————————————————————————————————————
1. Greased the throw-out bearing. To do this job remove
floor mats and floorboards and clutch inspection plate. Grease
bearing through fitting on throw-out collar. Do not over-
grease.
2. Packed the wheel bearings. Remove wheels and drums;
wash the bearings and races thoroughly. Packing bearing with
wheel bearing grease and reassemble. Do not forget the cotter
pin.
3. Grease the speedometer cable. Remove dash panel and
disconnect speedometer cable. Pull out the small inside cable
and wash thoroughly. Pack with light cup grease and reinstall
in the housing. Wipe off excess grease and replace instrument
panel.
4. Oil the gas pedal linkage. There are two places to oil.
Behind the engine on the shafts supports there are holes drilled
for oiling.
5. Tighten the lug nuts. Use firm even pressure on all lug
nuts. Be sure to see whether nuts are pressing the wheel to the
drum or just bottoming on the studs. A wheel that is not prop-
erly bolted to the drum can be ruined in very short order.
6. Check the oil in the transmission and rear end. Keep
level up to the filler plug, use 600W (SAE160) in both.
7. Clean and flushed the cooling system. The cheapest and
best products for this is Arm & Hammer washing soda into
radiator and fill with water, run hot for a half hour and then
drain. Flush system out several times with clean water.
8. Tightened the fan belt. Loosen generator mounting bolt,
move generator away from block until most of the slack is
taken up in the belt. Tighten belt. Then check belt to see if
adjustment has changed.
9. Rotate the tires. Spare to right front, right front to left
rear, left rear to right rear, right rear to left front, left front to
spare. Follow some pattern in each rotation.
10. Check the radiator hoses and clamps. Feel hose, if soft
and gummy, replace them. Same with split or rotten ones.
Check for clamp tightness.
11. Align the front wheels. Toe-in should be 1/16” plus or
minus 1/32”.
12. Oil the generator. There should be two oil holes on the
generator. The rear one is easy, the front one is protected by
an “L” shaped clip that has to be moved to one side. Most
Generators have sealed bearings which Do Not Require oil-
ing. Bushings must be oiled.
13. Spent an hour tightening nuts and bolts all over the
car. Self-explanatory.
14. Adjusted the point gap in the distributor. Ford recom-
mends a gap of .018 to .022 check the gap at least every 2000
miles.
15. Check the air in the spare tire. 35 PSI.
16. Check your emergency tool kit. Kit should including a
jack, points, condenser, plugs, wire, tools and a fire extin-
guisher. (See suggest tool & parts list).
17. Adjust the emergency brake. Take up the slack with the
clevises on the forward end of the emergency brake rods.
18. Check the oil level in the shock absorbers. On all origi-
nal shocks, there is a filler plug located near the top of the unit
Use STP or 600w oil to fill shocks.
19. Clean and tighten the battery cable connections. Most
corrosion and sulfate deposits can be washed off in a solution
of baking soda and water. Pull cables off the terminals and
clean the contact surfaces with rough sandpaper or file. Flush
with warm water and reattach them. The use of Vaseline or
light cup grease after assembly is recommended
20. Polish headlight reflectors. Use very soft cloth or cotton
with silver polish, not chrome polish as it will scratch and dull
the reflection. Check condition of lens gaskets.
21. Check all the light bulbs. Self-explanatory.
When Was the Last Time You?
The 2016 Tour & Parade season is here, we dodged the rain in January and fingers crossed for the rest of
our El Nino winter. On one of these rain days take this check list to the garage and run a few checks on your
Model A so you’ll be ready to keep the “A” rolling down the road. Taken from the Clubs Service booklet.
TECHNICAL TALK: Ian Bowman
Why? Why would someone take on this job? Trying to follow on after the technical prowess of Ar-
lyn Bieber seems a bit like taking the field after Payton Manning in his prime. Resulting in com-
ments like “Not bad, but he’s no Arlyn” or “He probably doesn’t even know the difference be-
tween a 1929 and 1930 headlight”. And “what kind of softball pitch was that Mystery Part? Every-
one knows it’s a….” So my goal is to not even compete. I’m going to side step. I’m not likely to be
able to teach those that have a 10,000 mile pin or built three cars much.
My job description, per the By-Laws is to “make technical presentations at each General Meeting. Hands-on semi-
nars may be presented to the membership”. I’d like to make this a collaborative effort. Let me know when you plan
on working on your Model A and we can let the membership know. We might have more than a few people around
to help with the repairs. I’d also like to collect a list of what items are in need of repair on your Model A – we will
probably find that it makes sense to set aside a day to work on a specific area or focus a monthly meeting on one
particular issue. Adeline (the name given to our A) is in need of a few repairs and so comparing notes and being
social with the work will make it easier and much more fun.
The Model A has been around for just shy of 100 years. A bit hard to write something original when so many have
been down that road. But I’m a fairly good aggregator of information. Between prior Quail Calls, MARC, MAFCA,
YouTube, websites, and Facebook, the web is full of information on our cars. Watching a YouTube video is how
Selena and I learned how to start our car. If there’s not already an index someplace, we should start one.
MODEL A MYSTERY PART: Here is a picture of a part used in a Model A. Iden-
tify the part and send an email to [email protected] with your answer. Your answer may
be the part name or an accurate description. Take a guess if you want – the most crea-
tive wrong answer will receive honorable mention. The names of those who correctly
identify the part will be placed in a box for a drawing at the next meeting. Remember
you must also attend the meeting to receive the $10 award. Good luck!
TECHNICAL SEMINAR – tbd
I’d like to start up a once a month repair or demonstration for our cars to leverage the
vast knowledge we have in the club. It’s not a bad Saturday spent in a garage working
on our cars and telling war stories about past parade or tour malfunctions. If no one
else volunteers by the next meeting, I might just have to host the first one and see if I
can talk Selena into cooking up some snacks.
Have a great month all!
MAFFI News: MAFFI is starting a free membership program for one young person (under 21) from each
local Model A Club. Membership includes the quarterly MAFFI newsletter sent by email, an iron-
on museum patch for jacket or cap and one year FREE admission to the Model A Ford Museum
and the Gilmore Car Museum in Michigan. Check www.maffi.org and click on “Become a
Member” for more information and the application or contact your club's MAFFI liaison (if your
club has one). This offer is good through 2016 for a year from the date the application is received and is limited to
one free membership per club.
If your club does not currently have a MAFFI Liaison, please email [email protected] the name and
email address of a willing person and we will gladly add them to our ‘Liaison List’.
We appreciate your continued support of MAFFI and your willingness to get the word out!
Happy New Year, Marsha Quesnel, Trustee, Model A Ford Foundation, Inc.
1928 ERA FASHIONS & LIFETYLES 1931: Patty Winchester:
Is this what goes on in your head? It does mine!
Ladies and Gents:
As your Fashion Chairperson this year, I am making it my own
and this year it will be known as a Fashion and Lifestyles Chairperson.
Not only will we be looking at fashions, but also anything to do with the lifestyles of the Model A Era.
And I will be calling on all of you who may have collections or items that we can look at and explore each month to
get an idea how life rolled, back at the time our cars first rolled!!
So, along with fashions, I would like to know who has collections of any sort from around the Model A Era, that we
can talk about. I am thinking appliances, delivery truck and delivery items, postcards and letters, holiday cards,
quilts, etc.., these can be in miniature, toy or picture form if unable to be brought in on its own.
Even a good story or memory would work.
So please help me out and I will coordinate putting these things together
to have a fun time exploring life during our Model A Era!
Oh, and ideas of all kinds are welcomed and appreciated!!!
You can contact me at (619) 504-4508 or Email me at [email protected].
My first month in February will be an event during the Big 3 Swap Meet. I am calling on all ladies, and you too
gents, who have gone to find something to wear to a club event, that is Model A era and we stand there looking at it
like a deer in the headlights. We look at something, not sure if it is even close to our era, try it on, not sure it looks or
fits like it should, we buy it, just to have “something”. Then we try to accessorize it and our head starts to hurt! Then
it sits in the closet, never to see the light of day again, because we just aren’t sure.
Well here is an opportunity for you! At the Big 3 Swap Meet,
Patty Jones, a MAFCA Model A Era, Fashion Expert brings a bounty of fashions to the Big 3 Swap Meet.
As we know through our past fashion coordinators, our club has a wealth of era fashion experts ourselves! I will call
them our Club Personal Shoppers. At the Big 3 Swap Meet on Saturday, February 26th at 10:00, all who are inter-
ested will meet at Judy Jo’s space (under the F3 flagpole), and walk together to Patti Jones space and try on, fit,
and accessorize with our own personal shoppers guiding us. No more fear of feeling like we are way off base.
So, let’s join together and find an outfit we can be confident in at one of our many Model A parades and tours
or even at a more classy affair!! It will be fun!
If you haven’t signed up please just call me at 619 504 4508
or Email me at [email protected].
Is this an era dress?
What goes with this outfit?
Does this look ok on me?
2016 Installation Banquet submitted by Bill Corson
What a fantastic event. Thanks to Selena and the entire banquet committee. Every year the bar is raised
considerably. I am still bathing in the afterglow, or is that the result of the bottle of wine table decoration I walked
off with? After being out of the area since June of last year it was great to see faces of my Extended family again.
Kind of like a home-coming. I will admit when first arriving my initial impression was that I had just walked into a
geriatrics ward. Especially when seeing Valarie in a wheel chair. Apologies to anyone offended. Myself in-
cluded. I did receive inquisitive stares for being with someone other than my wife. No I did not trade her in for a
new model. She was suffering with flu symptoms and did not want to infect anyone else so she invited her sister to
accompany me.
Congratulations for a job well done to the members going out of office, and those assuming duties of running
the San Diego Model A Ford Club. I am certain they will supply me with fodder for future Quail Call articles. My
critique already started during the banquet when out-going President Johnson had a slip of the tongue when he tried
to UPLOAD the new directors instead of UPHOLDING them for their positions. Newly installed President Win-
chester misplaced his scripted notes and had to wing it. He also could not locate a few member award plaques. For-
tunately he did remember to bring his wife Patty.
In the final analysis it was a wonderful evening that was enjoyed by all. Bill
Editor’s Note: Valarie Basham
According to the Newsletter guidelines set forth by MARC and MAFCA, the editor is supposed to have an article or
column every month. I have always felt that our club officers have covered just about every aspect in their articles
and I didn’t need to repeat information or take up more space. But one of my resolutions for the New Year, was to
try harder to get an Editor’s article in at least some issues. As many of you know I attended the Banquet with my
left foot in a splint, I broke a bone and had a follow up appoint to have a cast put on… Well the Dr. had other ideas,
apparently this break is a hard one to heal and I’m not as young as I use to be, (how does that happen). I was sched-
uled for surgery, and a week later I finally got my cast. Which will be with me for about 6 weeks, but this beats 4-6
months without surgery. This morning, as I’m balancing on my knee scooter (God bless the
person who invented it), waiting for the toast to pop up, the word FLAMGINO’s popped in to
my head. We’ve all seen them, and unfortunately smelled them. I have a new respect for these
feathered creatures. My question is how do they do it, stand on one leg for hours and hours,
never teetering or even swaying. They make it look so easy, but trust me it is not! While
watching them at the zoo or sea world I have also witnessed their nasty disposition with one
another. I now understand them a little better; there is a direct connection between standing on
one leg and a nasty disposition. I’m trying hard to keep that disposition in check, as I hang up
my Model A car keys for a few months, and let nature take its time, mending my bone back
together. Hope to see you at the February 12th meeting. I should have your 2016 Rooster!
2016 MEMBERSHIP ROSTER: Valarie Basham
With the help of Roxy Faust, we have been reviewing the Dues records, send out many emails reminders,
and made some personal phone calls to those that had not yet paid their 2016 Dues. Even done some investigation
work, tracking down a few missing checks. Finally I think we are ready to print the 2016 Membership Roster. Al-
beit, with at least a few mistakes because I am only human, if you find a mistake in your personal information please
let me know so that we can correct that information through the Quail Call. If all goes well and the printer can get
them back to us in time, they should be available at the February 12th meeting. We do not mail them out, but will
have them available at meetings, tours and parades. Each family may have one free copy and then extras are avail-
able for a small fee. It’s nice to have one tucked in the pocket of your Model A, just in case you have a problem
during a tour or parade. Thanks for you help Roxy F., Ray B., and Steve L. couldn’t have done it without you.
