PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Paul Winchester
With the Orange County Model A Ford Club Pancake Breakfast and the Lakeside Parade behind
us, I feel like summer is just around the corner. Both events were well attended, Stan and Judy
Boyer got us to Orange without any rain and Jim Tabor did a fine job of getting us to Lakeside on
time for the parade.
Parade season is here, get your car ready and don’t forget to bring all your “Bling” (referring to
flashy, ostentatious, or elaborate ornamented accessories,) that you can put on your car for a pa-
rade.
We hope the April showers brought May flowers to Borrego Springs for our overnight trip on Saturday May 14th it’s
not too late to sign up.
June 19th to 24th is the MAFCA Convention in Loveland Colorado. June 26th to July 1st is the MARC Meet in
Toledo Ohio. Why not go to both?
We continue to have several club members who are ill and need your good thoughts and prayers.
I hope to see you at the May 13th meeting. The May membership drawing is up to $30.00.

ORANGE COUNTY OVERNIGHT & PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Saturday April 9th & Sunday April 10th , 2016 On Saturday morning a group of us, including 5 Model A’s, headed north on I-5. We
made a scheduled stop in Carlsbad at the Green Dragon Restaurant with what was sup-
posed to be just a few minutes. Unfortunately one of the “A”s wasn’t able to restart so four of our club members
tried valiantly to trouble shoot the problem. After about an hour the only remaining option was to have the car towed
to Hansen’s in Ramona. Thanks go to Reen Kotas, Richard Books, Paul Winchester, and Rich Stelzer for their ef-
forts. We arrived in Orange around noon and had lunch at Watson’s (a ’50s style soda fountain and café). Rich and
JoBeth pointed out to me that Kelly Rippa was standing next to them while we were outside waiting to be seated.
After lunch a number of us walked around the Plaza shopping area and a couple of the guys went over to CW Moss.
Around 3:30 we met at the motel and had appetizers hosted by Rich and JoBeth. Sunday morning we drove over to
Hart Park for the pancake breakfast followed by the raffle with many nice items for the lucky winners. Some of the
members of our club who won raffle prizes were Reen Kotas, Valarie Basham, Richard Books, the Stelzers, the Fra-
zee’s, Ed Poffenberger and the Francis’. During the raffle drawing it rained lightly for about half an hour but fortu-
nately not the gully-washer that the weather forecasters had predicted -- dodged another one! Mileage on Saturday
goes to: Richard & Janet Books, Joann Edwards (et al, part way), John & Diane Frazee, Reen Kotas, Rich & JoBeth
Stelzer, and Paul & Patty Winchester. Mileage on Sunday goes to: Ray Beardslee. Participation on Saturday
goes to: Valarie Basham, Stan & Judy Boyer, Bob & Jeanette Bowie, Joann Edwards +4, Roy & Dalene Jensen, and
Ed Poffinberger. Participation on Sunday goes to: Dave & Kris Francis, Gary Karr, and Steve& Nancy Lovell.
UPCOMING TOUR: BORREGO OVERNIGHT Saturday
May 14th & Sunday May 15th
So far we have 30 people signed up to go and possibly two more. It
should be a nice ride out to Borrego Springs. Hopefully if we get
some more rain in April we should see some beautiful wild flowers
in bloom. If you are not on the sign-up list but want to go, call or
email Stan or Judy Boyer to put you on the list. Also, call the Bor-
rego Springs Resort @ 1-760-767-5700 to make your room reserva-
tion. Tell the person who answers that you are with the San Diego
Model-A Ford Club to get the special package discount. We hope
you can join us!
JUNE: NO SCHEDULED TOUR (for those who are going to the MAFCA Convention in Loveland, Colorado,
this will be the “tour” for June). There is a parades and several car displays to support in June, several that will finan-
cially benefit the club. Please help support our club by attending one or more of these events.

PARADES & Car Displays: Jim Taber
Lakeside Parade: Well we successfully made
it thru the first parade of the season, with 15
cars and new member Brian Mackey hitched a
ride with Chuck Niemeyer.
Here is a little article about the Lakeside Parade
submitted by Bill Corson :
Recently I submitted an article alluding to kindness
toward your model A. I decided to put my coupe to
the test to see if it would reciprocate while partici-
pating in the Lakeside Rodeo Days parade. It was a
glorious cloudless morning when Richard Potts and
I ventured down the hill with that destination in
mind. I got a little concerned when knowing rain
was not predicted, I detected what I thought were
sprinkles on the windshield. It did not take long to
realize water was gurgling from the radiator cap.
The faster I went the more it came out.
An inspection at the Target parking lot staging area revealed a faulty cap gasket. Not a major problem, just a nui-
sance to clean from the hood, fenders, and windshield before start of the parade, especially since I had added cool-
ant to the water. I knew Richard had been following me most of the way but did not know his 1930 pick-up was
also catching my spray.
As the rest of the group began to arrive I noticed Ron Peterson was also cleaning goop off his vehicle. I was certain
I did not contaminate his because he resides in La Jolla, a far piece from the section of I-8 we traveled. It appears
he may have a problem similar to mine.
As one who looks for an easy way out of most situations, I surmised why not drain the coolant from the radiator and
replace it with window cleaning solution? That way when it blows out the top all I have to do is gently wipe it off. It
was suggested by other club members that a more practical fix is to replace the worn gasket with a new one. Who
would have thunk that? I guess I will go that route.
P.S. The parade went well, thanks to Jim Taber for coercing the officials into putting the club in division 1.
Bill Corson Editor’s note: Hard Luck Trophy Time, Bill ? There are no pictures, & I guess there was no delay!
UPCOMING PARADES & DISPLAYS : Tierrasanta Parade on May 21. Current plans will be to meet at Abby’s BBQ 9353 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. (corner
of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Ruffin Rd) for a 8:45 am departure, so we can arrive at the staging area by 9:00 am.
Parade starts at10am.
Kensington Memorial Day Parade is May 30th, meeting at I-Hop Mission Valley, 2169 Fenton Pkwy, departing
at 9:15am for a 10:30 parade. Don’t forget your RED, WHITE and BLUE.
Following that, we have the La Mesa Flag day Parade on June 4, meeting at the old Coco’s @ 5550 Lake Murray
Blvd. departing at 8;30am, parade starts at 10:00.
On June 11, There will be a car display at Lantern Crest retirement home in Santee. Bud Swartwood has volunteered
to lead that one as we are planning to be out of town.
Monta Vista Car Display will be Sat. June 18th: more details next month
June 19th, Father’s Day display at Villa Bonita Assisted Living in Chula Vista from 11am-1pm. The address is
3434 Bonita Rd, just south of the 54 & east of the 805 We will meet there at 10:30 to get the cars in place. They will
be making a cash donation to the club, as well as providing us with lunch. We need 10 or more cars, please join us.
TECHNICAL TALK: Ian Bowman
Spring PM’s It’s Spring time in San Diego! Time to box up the heavy winter jackets, store the snow shovel and
put the block heater back on the shelf. It’s also time to get you’re A’s ready for Tour and Parade
season.
MAFCA online has some great resources. If you don’t already have a garage full of instruction
books, there is a list on MAFCA of 31 books, guides and tips. https://www.mafca.com/ref_books.html
There is also a link to an index of the Ford Instruction Books that outline the changes from year to year. You can
even see the French and Australian manuals.
https://www.mafca.com/tqa_instructionbooks.html
The downloads page ( https://www.mafca.com/ref_downloads.html ) has an index of articles for how to restore
your A ( https://www.mafca.com/downloads/Indexes/How2Index-all.pdf ). From another downloads page ( http://
www.mafca.com/downloads/ ) you can see a copy of the PM checks ( http://www.mafca.com/downloads/
Maintenance_Checklist.pdf ) from the Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook by Les Andrews.
The checks are broken down into Every Fuel Stop, Monthly, 500 Miles and the like. For the next meeting, I plan on
discussing with the Club best practices for those that are driving fewer miles in their A. Beyond the visual checks
of the oil, water, engine and fan, there is changing the crankcase oil. The Handbook recommends every 500 miles
but I would guess that this is because most are not daily drivers and drive less than 500 miles per year. I’ve not yet
read through all of it, but the Rocky Mountain A Club has published an extensive article on oil and changes
http://rmaford.org/wp-content/blogs.dir/396/files/2012/01/Which_Oil_to_Use_Update_Summary.pdf and
http://rmaford.org/wp-content/blogs.dir/396/files/2012/01/
WHICH_OIL_TO_USE_by_Russert_and_Wiedeman_Rev_C_Mar_2012.pdf
And by the way – a good article regarding changing oil for your modern is http://www.edmunds.com/car-care/stop-
changing-your-oil.html
SEMINAR : Saturday May 7th We will have a technical seminar on Saturday May 7th at 10:00 am at the home of new member Brian Mackey,
he is so ready to start putting together his 1929 Wood Panel Model A Truck which came to him in boxes. Let’s
help identify the parts and pieces that will become his Model A. Address is 8818 Wigwam Court, 92071. It's in
Santee just north of the 52 and 125 interchange. Please let Ian know that you will be attending so he will have
enough coffee and donuts for all. c: 619-261-0185 e: [email protected]
MODEL A MYSTERY PART: Keeping the trend going with “slow pitch right over the plate” parts and with the theme of PM’s – here is your
Mystery Part of the Month! Identify the part and send an email to [email protected] with your answer. Your answer
may be the part name or an accurate description. Take a guess if you want – the most creative wrong answer will
receive honorable mention. The names of those who correctly identify the part will be placed in a box for a drawing
at the next meeting. Remember you must also attend the meeting to receive the $10 award. Good luck!
Have a great month all!
1928 ERA FASHIONS & LIFETYLES 1931: Patty Winchester:
Appliances in the 1920’s and 1930’s
Can You Think of any More?
If you have any like these, or you have any that are not mentioned here,
please plan on bringing them to the meeting and…. lets share!
APRONS, APRONS, APRONS
Aprons have been about for many years, even centuries.
But, interestingly, in the very beginning they were
mostly used by men. By the depression era, because women had few dresses, they
wore aprons, to keep their dresses clean while cooking and cleaning. If unex-
pected company dropped by, they would just untie their apron, and feel as if their
dress was clean. Aprons also were worn for many of the varied chores that
needed to be done. NEXT MONTH-JUNE: Weddings in the 20’s and the 30’s. We have a wedding dress already! Thinking: invi-
tations, wedding pictures of the era, newspaper announcements, etc! Would love to have pictures of a whole
wedding party, if possible!
Back-Up Engine
A photo taken during the recent Roll’s and Bent’s tour
shows club members admiring a Model A engine displayed
in the bed of Ray Beardslee’s roadster pick-up. I surmise
that since his truck had to be hauled half way home from
the Orange County Pancake Breakfast last year due to an
engine failure he decided to play it safe and Carry a
spare. Good thinking Ray.
Bill Corson (of course)

Phrases from the Past (All In A Name)
When a girl had an active social life and flitted around with many different men it was said she went out with every
Tom, Dick, and Harry.
I knew such a person who did just that, until she decided to settle down with someone who was Frank and Ernest.
——————————————————————————————————————————————-
2016 O.C. Tour Etc.
I had intended to participate in the Orange County Pancake breakfast
(they call them flap-jacks where I come from), but I was presented with a bet-
ter offer by my Grand-daughter’s Husband, who is interning as a doctor and
invited me to witness a group hemorrhoid-ectomy Session at Patton State hos-
pital for the criminally insane. A real heart-stopper. Who could turn that down?
Just kidding. Consider it a belated April fools joke. Actually I was attending a
law enforcement retirees function out of the area.
Now that I am on the topic of hospitals, It has been brought to my at-
tention several of our club members have been languishing in and out of them
recently. I extend my best wishes For a speedy recovery for one and all.
I doubt anybody would have noticed my absence at the pancake break-
fast any how. I have not been called up to the winners table to collect a draw-
ing prize in years but, it is nice to see so many fellow San Diego members come back with parts they can not live
another day without. Congratulations to those falling into that category. Bill Corson

Mother wore an ample apron, to cover her clean dress. She’d tell you that’s what it was for if you asked her, I would
guess
But that apron had more uses, than I could even count. It brought in eggs and vegetables and could hold
a large amount.
I’ve seen her us that apron, to wipe her dripping brow. As she labored over the big range that’s just an antique now..
Her apron could bring giggles, in a game of peek-a-b00.
With her newest, sweet grandbaby as she hid her face from view.
When we kids were hurt or crying, we’d run to find her lap. She’d wipe the falling tears away, with a bit of apron flap.
That apron dusted tables and shooed away the flies
It did just fine as oven mitts, to take out bubbling pies.
But the greatest of the treasures, that old apron could hold, Was the endless LOVE from MOTHER abiding in each fold.
