Pacific Fleet was temporarily shore based at NAB, Kobler Field, Saipan, krianas Islands, on 28 December 1946, and had been in comaission since 12 k y 1945. U D R H. W. W O U R , USN was tbe squadron's Commanding Officer and U D R G. E. MI=, USN was %he Executive OfYicer.

The USS TbR(WA anohcred in Apra Harbor, Guam, Miariame Island8 on 10 January 1947 for a five day stop. On 15 January 1947, departure was* taken for Pearl Harbor. The ship had a 16arine detachment aboard'for transit purposes, so no air operations could be oonducted. On 20 January 1947, the USS TABILIUL croseed the lnternstional Date Line thereby gaiaihg a day.

Oa 28 Jmuary 1$47, Ens. R. Y. LARSON, US8R of Waupaca, Wisaonsind had a fatal accidenf. raoovery f'ram s rocket run he reported propeller failure, stalled o u t on approach to landing, and h i t the water in an inverted position. The plane sank immediately Kith no survTvor.

On 10 February 1947. ATUGK SQUADRON ONE ABLE flew aboard the US8 TARlkm for Fleet ~neuvere. Strikes were flown agehat the Htxwaiian Islands aad in the after- noon of 13 Februsry 1947 the USS moored a t Ford Island, Oahu, T.H.

On 17 February 1947, the OSS T A W , with ATTACK SQWBO'lJ OBlE A m aboard, departed Ford Island for Kvajalein Atoll after rendeivousing r i t h Task Foroe F m y - $9- for F l e e t Maneuvers. On 28 February 1947, Ens. W. H. TFEPLF, 'USNll of Sault Ste. Iiihrie, Michigan had a Patal accident during landing operations; He tried to W e s voluntary wave-off after taking a cut, hft the right oafnalk, bad f e l l into the water. He got out on the wing of the plane but went d m with it;

Dding the.period from 28 December 1946 to 28 March 1947,tnn pilots were k i l l e d in the squadhn, eight p i l o t s were detaahed from the squadron, and no pilots joined the squadron. Seventeen enlisted men were tra~sferred from the squadron and fourteen enlisted men joined the squsdrol~

LCDR H o W. WOBLMOUN, USN was t h e squadron's Conmaanding Officer and LCDR G o E, MILLER, USN was t h e Executive Officer.

The period Pram 28 March 1947 t o 16 April 1947 was spent i n an in tens ive t r a i n ing program i n type i n s t m e n t s and cross-country flying. Ai r support, f i e l d c a r r i e r landing practice, and two parade fornat ions were a l s o fluwn.

I On 29 September 1947, the USS TARAWL with ATTACK SQUADRON ONE ABIiE aboard, departed Hunterr s Point, Son Francisco, California for San Diego, California. On 30 September 1947 ATTACK SQTJADRON OM3 ABLE was launched t o become shore based again at NILS, San Diago, California.

The period from 1 Ootober 1947 t o 8 October 1947 was spent in preparation t o move the squadron t o NAS, Seattle, Washington. Bo air operations were conducted.

On 8 Ootober 1947, ATTACK SQUp-9RON ONE ABLE .departed for mBS, Alameda, California and arrived there in the afternoon. Due to poor weather the squadron didn't depart for NAS, Seattle, Washington unti l 12 Ootober 1947.

An intensive training schedule was established which stressecl G.C.A., type instruments, and night flying. Due t o poor weather conditions no gunnery and very l i t t l e bmbing was done.

On 21 November 1947, ATTACK SC&JABRON ONE ABU3 hparted for NBS, Almeda, California and arrived there in the afternoon. . On 22 November 1947, the squadron arrived a t HAS, San ~ i e g o , California.

Bn intensive training schedule m e established which streeaed dive-bombing, gunnery, nighk flying, and dual instruzaente.

On 28 Deomaber 1947, ATTACK SQUADRON OME ABKE was shore, based at NAS, San Diego, Califormia. The squadron was ccanposed of twenty-five p i l o t s and one h-ed - fourteen enlisted aen. Twenty SB2C-51s and 1 SNJ-4 were assigned t o the squadron.

landings aboard the U. S.S. BOX333 (GV-21) which was operating off the coast

the U.S.S. BO- (CV-21). which at that time was cruising off the coast o f

for the PJaval Air Station, S ~ P Diego, Cdiiornia, where it w i v e d that

afternoon. \

On 17 E[arch 1948, in compliance with directives from higher authority,

TTACK SQUAEDB.O~ dB= received it's f lrst two F4U-4 Corsair. This was the 4 begining of the Sqnadront 8 transition period of changiqg from 918C1s t o F4Ut 8.

The first PU-4 flight in the Sqmdrmn was loads by Lisutemt Junior Orade
