The San Benito County Water District(SBCWD) has obtained $2.2 millionin state emergency drought funds tohelp complete the Hollister UrbanArea Water Project (HUAWP). The funds will be used to complete a recycled water distribution system thatwill conserve drinking water and protect the local groundwater basin. The HUAWP is a collaborative effortamong the SBCWD, City of Hollisterand the Sunnyslope County WaterDistrictto deliverhighqualitywater to helpensureeco-nomicstabilityand con-tribute toa highquality oflife forthe entirecommu-nity.
Earlier this year, the SBCWD obtained$4.1 million in state funds for twowater treatment projects, bringing thetotal state grant funding for HUAWPto $6.3 million for 2014. “With thesetwo grants we’re able to continue ourwork in managing our local water re-sources,” said SBCWD Manager JeffCattaneo. “By using recycled water forour agricultural customers, we offsetpotable water usage and we protect our regional groundwater.”
The recycled water distribution projectwill complement the other componentsof the HUAWP, which include addi-tional drinking water treatment andthe ability to meet regulatory standards.
Highly treated recycled water will bedelivered from the Hollister wastewatertreatment plant to nearby farmers inthe vicinity of Wright Road. About12,000 feet of distribution pipeline willbe installed and will deliver about
1,200-1,400acre feet ofrecycledwater peryear. (Anacre foot of water is326,000gallons. A typical Hollisterarea familyof four usesabout220,000gallons ofwater peryear.) The use
of recycled water for agricultural production will reduce demands on the groundwater basin.
The HUAWP is a regional approachto managing the Hollister area’s waterresources. By taking advantage of recycled water for beneficial uses, itfulfills the commitment to an integratedresources management plan that keepslocal resources within the county.

Lessalt and West Hills Water Treatment Plants
The upgrade of the Lessalt WaterTreatment Plant, which will allowtreatment of up to 2.5 million gallonsper day (mgd), is nearing completion. Some unforeseen delays have occurredwith the manufacture of components, which will delay the project by a fewweeks. The upgrade project is stillwithin budget and will be operationalby the end of 2014.
Design of the West Hills Water Treat-ment Plant is 90% complete. Construc-tion of the new facility, which will treatup to 4.5 mgd of imported surfacewater for the Hollister urban area, could begin by the summer of 2015. Itwill be built with the ability to increaseits capacity when needed. Pipelines willbe constructed to deliver treated surfacewater to the Hollister area, includingthe central and western portions of the city. Currently, project officials are negotiating with the California Depart-ment of Fish and Wildlife on plans formitigating the impacts to the Califor-nia tiger salamander, a threatened andendangered species.
