Coming FridayA combination of philosophyand urban acrobatics iscatching on in S.A.
Should the inevitable happentonight or Sunday night and theSpurs win their fourth NBAchampionship in nine years, doyou get the feeling that vast sec-tions of the country want us toapologize for the victory?
To apologize for how the Spursgot there, how they played, thecity they play in, the personali-ties of their future Hall of Fame
coach and super-star, for their“lucky” breaks, for the favoritismthat was shownthem by officials, for the world notending beforethey won?
Perhaps it’sjust a conse-quence of listen-ing to too muchnational sportstalk radio —which can numbyour brain — butthere is a burge-
oning and sniping attitude outthere that suggests that theteam, city and fans should feelguilty for the way the champion-ship was won.
Before this current playoff run,the Spurs had already been liv-ing with the tag of being “bor-ing” and “dull,” a team of tal-ented and nice guys who folksoutside of San Antonio were in-different about.
But along came the WesternConference semifinals and theSuns hit the fan. In an instant,Bowen, Ginobili and Horry hadearned reps equal to those of al-Qaida’s leadership, and the en-tire team was transformed into aterrorist brigade out to destroyWestern basketball as we knowit.
Then, because two Suns brokea rule and each had to missGame 5, there were actual sug-gestions that there was a con-spiracy by the NBA to ensurethat the Spurs got to the Finals.
That suggestion was laughableto any Spurs fan with an infe-riority complex — and everySpurs fan has an inferiority com-plex because we know in ourhearts that the league would pre-fer to have teams in largermedia markets in the Finals.
Now that the Spurs are in theFinals, we’re forced to listen todaily lamentations about low TVratings and how, as in their pre-vious championship years, theSpurs can’t make the nation careenough about them to watch. Oh,and there’s still the whining cho-rus bellowing that Phoenix gotrobbed and that the Spurs werelucky they didn’t have to playthe Dallas Mavericks.
Having secluded myself so thatI could diligently study the manyreservations people have aboutthe Spurs’ imminent victory andhaving meditated for manyhours and understanding whythey feel the way that they to do,I have but one question:
When is the victory parade? The haters aren’t going to
spoil this for us. We’ve got onemajor-league sports franchise inthis city, we suffered with themfor a quarter of a century beforethey won their first title, we’rein a small market, we will neverbe the darlings of the league, ourcity’s name is never more pub-licized than when the Spurs arein the Finals, they give us joyousrespite from our everyday strug-gles and they have created a dy-nasty.
And we’re supposed to feelguilty about this?
Call the Spurs a boring anddirty team propped up by thecommissioner’s office in NBAheadquarters if they must, andlet them mention that San Antonio is an awful place to winter and that you won’t findany history or good Mexicanfood here.
Gloating is unnecessary, but sois apologizing. Should the Spurswin a couple of more titles andfewer people across the nationwatch, so be it. Only a few citiesget to relish these kinds of cham-pionship runs.
Should the inevitable happentonight or Sunday night, be wiseand careful in your celebrations, especially those of you riding in
Let themrant; we’llstill havethe trophy

Wearing anything Spurs-emblazoned is a must-have lookthese days. But, c’mon ladies and gents, there’s morethan one way to wear a T-shirt.
As our beloved Spurs step up their game in the team’s questfor the NBA championship, we think it’s time we step up ourstyle game (think silver) in homage to our hometown heroes.
And with silver being the hottest metallic going this summer, accessorizing with the precious metal is a no-brainer, not to mention a spirited choice forthe remainder of the NBA Finals.
For women, mirror-like effects can be hadin handbags and headbands, in shoes fromflats to peep-toes and with belts from chainsto wide hip-hugging styles. Guys can scorestyle points, too, in particular with sneakersthat are silver-soled or totally dipped in the
metallic hue.For sure, silver is this season’s key color statement and lucky
for us because the metal message says it loud: Go Spurs Go!Go Guy Go
A jersey and jeansare fine for theregular season,
but this is the Fi-nals, baby! Step
up your game withblack denim and a
T-shirt, toppedwith a white linen
jacket. A silverpocket square and
snazzy sneaksmake the look
suite-worthy.
Pile on the metal. Shimmer and shine in silver hoops necklaces;make some noise with big bold bangles in black and silver.
Go Girl Go Look 1You’re not center
court at the AT&TCenter. Tweak your
black and silverwith a pop of pink
over a ruffledwhite blouse. Slip
on some skinnyblack pants andglam it up with
the preciousmetal: newsboy
cap, tote and se-quined ballet flats.
Go Girl Go Look 2Shirts or skins?
How ’bout a littleof both with a fit-ted foil-printed tee
and metallicstriped blouseand the short-
