Student Scholarships

Did you know that SHRM AND SAHRMA offer scholarship opportunities to HR

students? We'll here more information on the SHRM Foundation Scholarship (stay tuned) but there is an upcoming deadline for the SAHRMA Scholarship - MARCH

The Art Edgarian / Charles Umshied Scholarship is awarded in recognition of Art Edgarian and Charles Umshied who

were two key SAHRMA contributors.

Each year TWO scholarships are awarded (one in the Spring and one in

the Fall) - each scholarship is for $1,000/student selected.

Deadlines for 2015

March 31 - Spring Scholarship (recipient will be notified by April 30)

October 31 - Fall Scholarship (recipient will be notified by Nov 30)

President's Message

Watching the Academy Awards is an annual ritual at my house. It's fun to see the glamor and fashion, recognize familiar faces from the "big screen," and hear about all the movies I won't have time to see. Since movies are all about telling a story, the fanfare of the Oscars reminds me about the Power of Storytelling. SAHRMA's March 10th General Meeting will feature the topic "Storytelling in Business." Many of us do not realize just how frequently we tell stories in our daily lives. Good stories will engage your audience members, whether they are children, colleagues, or senior management. Improving your storytelling skills can help establish instant credibility and influence key decisions. Come to think of it, many of the most persuasive individuals I know are those skilled at the art of telling a story. MENTOR ME The "MentorMe" program continues in 2015 and kicked off Feb 3 at Geekdom! We have well over 50 students and recent grads who

have participated in the program over the last 4 sessions and we have 30 currently signed up to participate in one of our mentoring groups.

SHRM Certification or HRCI?

This is definitely a hot topic amongst the HR community these days! There are so many questions from people who have never taken the exam, those who took the HRCI and did not pass (yours truly), people who have their HRCI certification and are not sure if they want to take the current Pathway offered currently free of charge by SHRM for the remainder of the year. So many questions, so many different responses by a diverse group of HR professionals. Well, I don't have all the answers but I will tell you my story in hopes that it might help you along your certification journey. I have taken the PHR Certification exam many times. I utilized every study method out there from virtual class, classroom, online courses, and finally self-study. I have purchased so many study guides, books and manuals that I have a library almost as big as any public library around town. I have flashcards all over the house, my office and even in my car from where I would be studying on any given day and time. Every time I took the exam, I would be mere points away from the infamous 500 score to pass. Read More

Hiring People with Disabilities-A Guide

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and several other federal agencies have developed a new guide called "Recruiting, Hiring, Retaining & Promoting People with Disabilities: A Guide for Employers." It was published February 3, 2015.

This resource guide identifies relevant federal and federally funded resources for employers looking to recruit, hire, retain, and promote people with disabilities. It is designed to answer common questions raised by employers and to identify relevant resources for employers who want additional information on specific topics. The goal of this guide is to help employers implement commonsense solutions to ensure that people with disabilities, like all Americans, have the opportunity to obtain and succeed in good jobs and careers. The guide uses a question and answer format to help employers navigate core issues related to the employment of people with disabilities. It is by no means comprehensive, but it is meant to provide answers to key questions in an easy-to-use format, with links to federal and federally funded resources that can provide further information.
