Once known as the Wool Capital of the World, San Angelo, Texas continues in the tradition today with many sheep ranches still in operation. Much of the West Texas history is rich with tales of the wool and mohair industry.

The Miss Wool Pageant was the idea of Della Halbert Whitehead. She con-ceived the idea of the pageant as a means of publicizing wool products to consum-ers around the world with the idea to stimulate the use of wool for draperies, rugs, upholstery and for fashion. The initial Miss Wool contest was held in 1952 and was named the “Miss Wool of Texas Pageant”. The event was so successful that the Sheep & Goat Rais-ers Association presented a plan for a national pageant at the National Wool Growers Association Convention held in Phoenix, Arizona in 1958. The first national pageant, The Miss Wool Con-test, took place on August 28, 1958 in the newly constructed San Angelo Coli-seum. Some 6000 spectators attended the pageant, and the tradition was born.

Sadly, San Angelo and the wool in-dustry waved farewell to the pageant in 1972. As a result, Downtown San Angelo Inc.’s Promotions Committee Chairman, Brenda Gunter, had the in-spiration to revive this event and bring it into present day. Thus San Angelo’s “Sheep-Spectacular” was born. Recog-nizing that trying to replicate the original pageantry would not be feasible, Ms. Gunter envisioned contestants as spe-cially designed fiber glass sheep. Once sheep were solicited, sponsors would contract local artists to produce the de-sign and theme of their project. Sponsor-ship information packets were produced and included recommended materials, artist information listing, suggested proj-ect titles, estimated sponsor costs and contact data.

From the moment the boxes were opened and the fiberglass forms were displayed, artists could be seen running their hands over them as if introduc-ing themselves. Visitors passing by had to stop to take a peek at the oversize sheep. Contestants made their way to

artist’s studios, garages and homes via large vehicles and pick-up trucks. The enthusiasm ballooned and it was not long before more fiberglass forms were ordered.

A “Sheep-Spectacular” Parade was held on October 13, 2007 which con-sisted of twenty plus trucks, hay bales to support sheep art, identifying banners and plenty of volunteers to shepherd the sheep throughout the downtown area. Once all spectators cheered the parade entries, trucks made their way to be displayed. Ballots were placed at the en-trance to the building and visitors were given the opportunity to select their fa-vorite design and vote for the 2007 Miss Wool.

Another aspect of the “Sheep-Spec-tacular” was to have a contest with high school students allowing them the op-portunity to design a smaller scale ce-ramic sheep. The students were asked to submit their design and theme. The

result was a fabulous array of color, de-sign and clever project titles which were featured as centerpieces at the dinner, concert and dance, “Shepherds Shin-dig,” which culminated the Miss Wool day’s events.

Many factions of the community quickly became involved and the “Sheep-Spectacular” became a San An-gelo tradition. The flock began to grow not only in the central business district, but you’ll find brightly painted sheep all over the city.

As of today, Downtown San Angelo, Inc. has sold 80 of the fiberglass sheep forms to a diverse group of sponsors (some as far away as Colorado). The project provided various elements of economic development by providing local artists to be compensated for their work and various businesses for provid-ing a base to hoist and keep the sheep in place.

One of the art world’s most enduring elements – theatre-derives its capacity for survival and success form the will of the people and the community it serves. Perhaps that is why Angelo Civic Theatre’s rich history is such a vivid testament to the San Angelo’s artistic spirit. Angelo Civic Theatre traces its developmental roots from a dramatic society that was formed on November 21, 1885, and whose first project was initiated to secure funds for a town clock. Although vacillating economic times and two world wars suspended the artistic efforts of the community on a number of occasions, theatrical productions continued. In 1950 upon the creation of the San Angelo Civic Theater, a sustainable form of theatre was realized. In 1980, the theater’s Board of Directors raised the funds necessary to purchase and renovate the Parkway Theatre into a 230-seat theatre that continues as the Theatre’s current home. Since its inception, the Theatre’s artistic programming has expanded to serve approximately 15,000 participants each year. Angelo Civic Theatre is committed to the growth of each volunteer, artist, staff member, board member and patron. In keeping with that ideal, the Theatre will provide opportunities that encourage a commitment to artistic excellence, respect for self and others and service to the community.

San Angelo Cultural Affairs

In 1978 a group of local citizens banded together to create an organization to support the arts and culture in San Angelo and the Concho Valley. That group later became the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council. The San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council supports the art and culture in the area through the twenty-one year old Cactus Music Series, the San Angelo Artist Registry, the weekly newsletter, grants to local arts and non-profit organizations, and the oldest wine and food festival in Texas. The 31st Annual San Angelo Wine and Food Festival will kick off with a grand affair on January 17, 2015. Chef Walter Scheib, White House Chef for Presidents Clinton & Bush, will prepare a star-studded menu of dishes that have been served at White House State Dinners to kings, queens, foreign dignitaries, and celebrities. The annual Uncorked and Fork and Cork Finale events will bring wine and food from across the United States to San Angelo for two special evenings on April 23rd and 24th, 2015. Books are just the beginning at Stephens Cen-tral Library. Cultural events, art exhibits, games and much more await you at this vibrant down-town destination. Stephens Central Library is San Angelo’s premier spot for educational, fami-ly-friendly activities. Fall and winter months are packed with fantastic, fun, and free events. Week-ly computer classes develop technology skills in an intimate, classroom environment. Novices need not be afraid, as classes are offered for all skill levels. Holiday-themed movies provide sea-sonal entertainment for viewers of all ages. Get ghoulish in the basement of the library as we show spook-tacular Halloween favorites. And look for Christmas movies in the community room in De-cember. Check the library calendar for up-to-date scheduling information. Two music-oriented pro-grams are slated for October and January. From a visionary singer songwriter to the nature-inspired musings of a renowned children’s author, music

is in the air! Along with these special events, the children’s department hosts weekly story times and singing activities. Little ones can show off reading skills as they team up with four legged friends for two regular events: Read to Dogs and Read to Lucky. Teens can enjoy the many ser-vices, resources and opportunities offered by the Teen Republic. Anime Club brings Manga-mind-ed youth together to discuss the popular art form, and there’s always something going on in the Teen Republic. Young adults can retreat to their very own space for gaming, computing, or simply curl-ing up with a good book.

At Stephens Central Library, you can feed your body while nourishing your mind. Off the Pages Bistro, located in the lobby of the library, serves an assortment of savory food and drink. So grab a bite and explore a land of endless dis-covery. See you at the library!
