“architecture is a hazardous mixture of omnipotence and impotence. it is by definition a chaotic adventure... in other words, the utopian enterprise.”

bringing communities together through interstitial space

Location:

MAKE:45,324 / LIVE:22,574

Design Concept:

This project looked to find a way to revitalize the historic Brewery District of Cincinnati. The site was determined to be along the spine of the district because of the locations ability to exact change, and begin the rejuvenation process. The two major design concerns for this project were to bring together artists from the surrounding areas into a thriving and self-sufficient community. And secondly, to help bring a new sense of community to this area in hopes of spearheading similar projects with community cohesion and well-being in mind. The plan is laid out in such a way that all the storefront and areas of public interest are housed in the rectangular building to the south of the site and dubbed MAKE. The housing, or LIVE units, are placed towards the north of the sight in a 5 story building which also has units equipped with studio space. The entire site is surrounded by public garden space and paths as a means of integrating the community at large.

r & r houseDesign Concept:

Family time and relaxation are seemingly becoming “amenities” that we in the 21st century may not always make enough time for. Through the use of architecture, and the way the built space can guide human function, the R & R house hopes to address this issue.Located amongst the higher elevations of a small beach town along the Oregon coast, the house is sheltered from all but the south side by trees and brush. Open rooms that share boundary lines and flow into one another, were created with an emphasis on mainting site lines to all related communal spaces.

Design Concept:

With an emphasis on safety and private dwelling, the Jurj house aims to keep occupants protected while still maintaining a sense of warmth. Ribbon windows augment the bedrooms along the south and west walls, while the elongated shed roof helps to bring in light from the south, east and west. The main communal lounge space of the house is further illuminated by a main atrium, the house’s centerpiece.

Location:

A proposal for a new school of Architecture and Allied Arts on the University of Oregon campus that would help bring different disciplines together. As is evident in so many schools of “disparate” thought, combining space into one building is not enough to foster dialogue. This proposal combats the issue at hand by utilizing the circulation nodes, both of the university as well as the proposed building, to create connections between different groups. The location of the building on the fringe of campus and surrounded by retail outlets, coupled with its enigmatic form, help to captivate the attention of passersby and occupants alike. Taking advantage of many of the main circulation paths through campus and incorporating them into the buildings anatomy increase its relevance to campus life.

church/schoolLocation:

Design Concept:

A proposed Mennonite church / community center and alternative high school. This project takes into account how spaces are shared between two very different groups of people, and the relationships these groups, and the community at large, share together. Aside from just the built structure, the large expanse of land was also very important in terms of extending these integrating concepts past the building and through the site as a whole.

opera house

Location:

169,338

Design Concept:

Due to Portland’s lack of an stand alone opera house, this proposition was made. Located on the west waterfront just off the boardwalk, this is an exceptional location. Very close to the heart of downtown, and just a short walk away from a number of parks, both pedestrian and motor traffic make this a highly accessible venue. Housing two auditoriums, both located on the north side of the structure, it will be able to host a number of productions. The building, although a large structure compared to the existing surrounding, relates to it’s surroundings most prominently by extending it’s west wing towards the water. This cantilever creates a sheltering relationship with boardwalk users and helps to attract those passing by through the highly transparent ground level.
