(TODAY: HOME OF THE PARKING DECK) Ever since Mr. McIntire bought the Annie Pierpoint prop-erty on Center St. two weeks ago Rutland business men have been speculating as to what he would do with it. The building includes not only the property on Center St. occupied by Smith’s shoe store, Gosselin’s meat market and Pope’s candy kitchen, but also a large parcel of land in the rear of these stores with a front-age of about 200 feet on Willow St. Beginning at the east end of W.E. Barker`s livery stable, Mr. McIntire owns all the land on the south side up to the Berwick House line.

It was learned from the best of authority Thursday that Mr. McIntire is contemplating the erection of a modern opera house on his new property. The only thing that stands in the way of the erection of the

building is the doubt as to whether the people of Rut-land would appreciate a first-class theater enough to make it a paying institution. As to the appreciation of the “show folks” there is no doubt. Dozens of the best companies pass through here very season on their way from New York to Montreal, which would be glad to stop off if the city afforded decent theatrical accom-modations.

A man very intimate with Mr. McIntire said Thurs-day that if the opera house were built it would be up to date in design, construction and finish. The building would be a one-story affair, with the main entrance on Center St. Right here is the particular advantage of Willow street location. If the opera house fronted on a business street it would hardly pay to build a single-story building and the theater would have to

be perched up in the air over a row of stores. It is understood that Mr. McIntire`s opera house, if

built, will be inferior to the fine theaters in the cities only in size. The stage will be of suitable size, equipped with all the modern machinery and appliances, and the dressing rooms will be large and commodious. The au-ditorium will be circular in shape, with raised tiers of seats, every one looking toward the stage.

The whole will be topped by a handsome dome from which will be suspended a gorgeous chandelier spar-kling with hundreds of lights. Theater boxes and gal-leries come in as a matter of course.

All danger in case of fire will be guarded against by giving the theater seven exits. Mr. Mcintire will proba-bly begin the preliminary work as soon as he definitely decides to put up the building.

A new opera house: rumor that L. H. McIntire is to build one on Willow St.

Fair Haven Union High School Project Graduation is a group of parents of seniors at the school who are raising funds to provide an all-night, safe, substance-free evening for the graduating class of 2012. This year they are planning on taking the students to the Fun Spot in Queensbury, NY for an evening of fun and activities. Red Cross disaster services to be taught in Rutland, VTRutland, VeRmont – The Red

Cross has announced an upcoming training session aimed at providing an introduction on how a person can volunteer with the American Red Cross to help area communities prevent, prepare for and respond to disaster. From 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29th, the Red Cross will present “Disaster Services: An Overview” at the Red Cross offices at 117 Strongs Avenue, Rutland, VT.

The devastation of Tropical Storm Irene, record spring flooding and a busy winter fire season have all been vivid reminders that disaster can strike close to home. As we all saw, responding to such events requires the combined efforts of local and

state resources, including private and governmental organizations. Among those community partners is the American Red Cross, a non-governmental non-profit.

American Red Cross disaster responses are carried out on a local level by volunteer Disaster Action Teams. These teams assist those affected by disasters such as fire, flood, winter storms, as well as other natural and man-made disasters. Disaster Services: An Overview is an instructor-led, basic level course and serves as an introduction to Red Cross disaster services. Included in the overview will be information on the role of Disaster Action Teams in helping their community prevent,

prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters.

Participants will also learn more about the scope of Disaster Services at their local Red Cross.

While the presentation is an introduction to becoming a volunteer American Red Cross Disaster Action Team member, and serves as a prerequisite for all Red Cross disaster training, anyone in the community who is interested in hearing the materials presented in this class is welcome. To register, contact Debbie Lee of the Vermont & the New Hampshire Valley American Red Cross. She can be reached at [email protected] or by calling her at 802-773-9159.

Historic year highlights importance of local disaster volunteers

Festival of Quilts to showcase area quiltersThe Maple Leaf Quilters Guild, 26th Festival of Quilts takes

place Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, VT. The Festival of Quilts is open from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

The quilt show will feature an impressive display of quilts, including traditional, contemporary, pieced, and appliquéd. It also features an exhibit of antique quilts dating from 1930 and earlier.

The 2012 Featured Quilter is Marcia Shipman of Rutland, Vermont. Her handiwork reveals a broad range of skills from precise quilting to whimsical appliqué, and thread painting. Shipman’s attention to detail and color as a water colorist is evident in her works of fabric, threads, and embellishments. She had a quilted piece published in the December 2011-January 2012 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine. Pamela Druhen, of Northfield, Vermont, well known for her “threadscapes” fabric art pieces, is the show’s Invitational Quilter.

Druhen combines fabric, quilting, heavy threadwork and fabric dyes to create intricate pieces of fine art. She will give two gallery talks on Saturday, one on Sunday, and she will also be onsite to discuss her quilts.

The 2012 Raffle Quilt, which will be on display, is a beautiful hand appliqued Dresden Plate. The quilt began as unfinished and hand sewn, vintage quilt blocks that were donated to the Guild.

The drawing also includes a batik quilt by Judy Turner,

Hubbardton; an embroidered table runner by MLQ member Karen Charles; a wall hanging by Shelly Sass, Londonderry and aa one-of-a-kind blue and bisque colored stained glass piece of interlocking squares crafted by Elaine Nordmeyer of Hubbardton, VT. The winner will be drawn at approximately 3:30pm, Sunday, April 1st. The winner does not need to be present to win. Show highlights also include vendors, tea room, and a ticket auction of gift-filled baskets. Returning this year is a Consignment Boutique where show attendees will find a variety of treasures, and a new “Pincushion Frenzy” sale.

There will be ongoing demonstrations by vendors and Guild members. Guild volunteers will be on the exhibit floor to answer questions.

There is an admission charge of $6.00, and children under 12 welcome free of charge. The show is handicapped accessible. The Festival of Quilts and Quilt Raffle project are the primary fundraising events of the Maple Leaf Quilters Guild. The Guild sponsors educational meetings and participates in a variety of community service activities. The next Guild meeting is March 20, 2012 at 7:00pm at Christ the King Church in Rutland, VT. For additional information email [email protected] or visit the MLQ website at www.mapleleafquilters.org

the dangers of texting while driving. The SADD Chapter developed a slogan for the contest, “Decide Your F8, Texting Can W8”, and then opened the t-shirt design portion of the contest to anyone in the school. Sierra Quenneville, a student in the Hospitality and Entrepreneurship Program from Otter Valley Union High School, won.

Phase 2 was a poster or billboard which promotes teen driving restrictions, which are known in Vermont as the Graduated Driver’s License. New drivers in Vermont who are less than 18 years old are restricted as to who they may have in the vehicle with them for the first six months of operation. This is designed to cut down on the number of passengers killed and injured by inexperienced drivers; the GDL has been very successful in achieving this goal. The SADD Chapter designed a new slogan,” When You’re Alone, You’re in the Zone”, and developed two possible entries. The first entry was designed by Brian Ward, a student in the Public Safety Services Program from Fair Haven, and it was a painting of a single set of tire tracks on a white background, and bore the slogan. It was painted by SADD members Stephen Marcoux of Castleton, and Logan Clark of Rutland. This was designed as a fallback entry should the much more technically complicated entry not come to fruition.

Plan A, the eventual entry, was to take the Stafford Technical Center Tractor Trailer School’s vehicle and revise one side of the trailer to make a moving billboard. Due to time and monetary concerns, a complete revision of the trailer was out of the question. The design, which incorporated the slogan, and exactly covered the existing writing, and a drawing of a car with one occupant, was done by team member Rachel Ray, a talented graphic artist in Stafford’s Digital Arts Program from Rutland. The artwork was done into banners by Awesome Graphics. A number of Stafford students, some wearing uniforms representing their program, were photographed around the truck, and the photo was entered into the contest. A group of judges will determine the top 25 entries, which will compete on Facebook for the most number of “likes”.

Exhibit This! The Museum Comedies begins March 22nd

Little City Players will present Luigi Jannuzzi’s artful and raucous Exhibit T h i s ! T h e M u s e u m Comedies on March 22-24 & 30-31 at 8:00 pm and April 1 at 2:00 pm at the Vergennes Opera House. For t i cke ts and more information contact (802) 877-6737 or visit www.vergennesoperahouse.org

E x h i b i t T h i s ! T h e Museum Comedies is a wonderful collection of short plays and monologues based on works of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. See what happens when paintings have conversations with their artists and with each other, or when characters try to escape the frames they have been hanging in for years. Sometimes the museum’s guards and curators are aware of what’s happening and sometimes they aren’t. Come take a tour of the museum with a guide who has her own unique perspectives on what

the various paintings mean. See what happens when exuberant art patrons try to enter into their favorite works of art. Find out who really drew that sketch attributed to Michelangelo!

This play has won four Samuel French Finalist Awards , one Off Off Broadway Award (OOBR.com) & The 2006 Perry Award for Best Original Play production in New Jersey Theater (NJTheater.com)

Directed by Dora Greven, the play features a cast of over 20 local actors. Works by local artists will be on display or for sale in the lobby during this production.

Established in 2006, Little City Players is a community theatre group based in Vergennes, VT. They work to promote the arts in their community and serve as an outlet for members to have fun while gaining experience in the theatre. For more information visit www.littlecityplayers.org.

The Travel Health Clinic at Rutland Area VNA (RAVNAH) provides travel health services including vaccines, pre-travel counseling and individualized disease prevention plans to international travelers.

Traveling to foreign countries can be challenging if you’re not prepared. Disease, illness and injury happen unexpectedly to even the most experienced traveler. For most travelers who stay in resort areas, simple preparation and taking precautions can eliminate any risks. However, if you’re traveling outside North America or Western Europe, more preparation may be needed to protect your health. There are certain foreign countries that require travelers to provide proof of vaccinations at their frontiers or ports of call.

Vaccinations at RAVNAH’s Travel Health Clinic are offered by appointment Monday- Friday at the RAVNAH office at 7 Albert Cree Drive in Rutland. The cost of immunizations depends on what vaccines are needed.

For information or to schedule an appointment, call 770-1536 or email [email protected].

The Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly

Mill River Union High School will once again bet sending an Odyssey of the Mind team to World Final competition. This year’s team of students presented a solution to “You Make the Call”, a balsa structure problem at the state competition held March 10, 2012 at Champlain Valley Union High School. The team’s performance earned them second place and the right to

compete against other state and international teams at Iowa State University May 23 – 27, 2012.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition started by Dr. Sam Micklus thirty-three years ago to encourage creative thinking in his college-level design class. It has since evolved into a national and international competition for students from kindergarten through

college aged. Five different types of problems are written every year to engage many different types of learning styles and interests. Teams of up to seven students may select to build a vehicle, solve a technical problem, engage in a study of classical literature, art, or music, build a balsa structure, or present a theatrical performance. This year’s team members, Skylar Ambrose, Carter Steever, Mike Stratton, Rachael

Patch, Gabby Lazzarro, and Jake Bloomer were coached by George Ambrose. They will be hosting bake sales, student activity events, a tag sale and many other fundraising events to help with expenses of the trip. For further information about Odyssey of the Mind, to rent a table for their tag sale April 28, or to contribute to the team, contact Kathy Jacob at [email protected] or call 775-6590.

As you can imagine, the staff at the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) goes through a lot of supplies feeding and caring for the animals in the shelter. They are currently in need of certain items so if you'd like to make a donation for the animals they'd really appreciate it! The shelter needs dishwashing soap, hi-efficiency laundry detergent, 33

gallon trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, pig ears, large rawhide bones and bedding for the animals (new or used comforters, quilts, blankets, sheets and towels). The animals and staff would be very appreciative of donations of any of these items! If you have any questions please contact the shelter at 483-6700. Thank you for your continued support!

V e r m o n t m a p l e sugarmakers all across the state invite you to visit and celebrate Vermont maple on March 24th and 25th. The Annual Vermont Maple Open House Weekend will be held at sugarhouses throughout Vermont, March 24 – 25, 2012. Maple Open House Weekend is a celebration of the maple syrup season in Vermont and an opportunity for you and your family to visit one or more sugarhouses throughout the state to learn about maple sugarin’ in Vermont.

“We expect to have

another good year of maple syrup production,” said Bill Clark, a sugarmaker i n R u t l a n d C o u n t y. “The weather this year is reminiscent of the 1949 season when trees were tapped as early as Valentine’s Day.”

“Maple sugaring is a rich part of Vermont’s identity and heritage,” said Betty Ann Lockhart, author of the book Maple Sugarin’ in Vermont and member of the Vermont Sugarmakers’ Association. “The Maple Open House Weekend is a quintessential Vermont event that celebrates this timeless tradition.”

Some sugarhouses offer tours of their sugarbushes and many have special activities for families. No

two sugarhouses are the same so you are encouraged to visit more than one.

There is nothing sweeter than v i s i t ing a loca l sugarhouse. From the tree to the table, you’ll see firsthand why Vermonters make the finest maple syrup in the world.

Vermont is the largest U.S. producer of maple s y r u p a n d p r o d u c e d over a million gallons of syrup in 2011. There are approximately 2000 maple producers in Vermont.

Information about all of the participating maple syrup producers including which of the two days they will be open and directions t o t he i r suga rhouses can be found on www.vermontmaple.org

You know, there are few things that are really predictable in this world today, but one of them is the return of the Steelhead Trout every spring to the tributaries that feed Lake Ontario, on their annual migratory spawning run. This year was bound to be different somehow, not that they would not return to spawn, but when that would occur. With little to no snowfall on the Tug Hill Plateau this

year the snowmobile industry struggled mightily just to survive. Indeed many dealers did not, and the local economy suffered greatly from the thousands of downcountry riders that just did not show up. With little to no snow to melt for the usual spring heavy flows in these tributaries, we all were wondering just how the fish would react.

Mother nature answered us with a great week of unusually warm days and what snow was in the hills

just let loose all at one time. All the streams, creeks, and rivers were swollen with the spring rush of water and, much to the wonder of all us anglers, were also swollen with a tremendous spring run of Steelhead. For any of you that might be interested in some great fishing and have a NY license, I would be heading west either this week or next week as the fish are definitely there---and in great numbers. With this

warmer weather, the stonefly hatches have been prolific and we have been catching on black stonies, both gold beaded and non-beaded, on glass beads, and on the regular offerings of fresh eggsacs in pink and chartreuse. Locals often catch as we used to in our youth---with the old favorite garden hackle, or as the southerners call them----night walkers. In the east, these earthy critters are much slower, so we call them night crawlers----but the Steelhead love them too. Some forget that we are talking about just a plain old Rainbow Trout, only in the 7,9, or 11 pound class, and they return back to the lake after spawning. For sure, a fish that big need to eat----and eat a lot---so

any offering that they would normally see in the water will be fair game for them. For the angler, that simply means that you can fish them just about any way you want. Be a kid sitting on a bank with a pole dangling a night crawler---or be the consummate angler with your hundreds of dollars (dare I say thousands) of gear and some pretty fancy flies. Your choice, but the fun is just the same, and I can tell you from years of experience that it NEVER gets tiring, or boring, or mundane, or even nasty. Pick any superlative word that you can imagine---then double it----and then you have the true glory of Spring Steelhead fishing.

For those of you that have experienced the “agony of defeat”, I am sure that you know that it seldom helps to turn your head to the ground for more than just a fleeting moment. I had that moment, and then on some sober reflection, turned that head towards clearer waters---full of fish----and used some skill I had developed over many years to produce not one but about 40 victories against some wily and cagy creatures. And on one day in particular, I chose to make a contest of my own choice against these fish. I fished all day, about 7 hours in all, on about five different streams, and fought a lot of fish. The challenge I made to myself on this day was to fish until I had battled a certain number of fish to submission and released them---and then, and only then, would I stop fishing for the day. And I did it. At 5:30 on that day, pretty much exhausted but content with my success, I stopped fishing after landing my 17th fish. I hope you enjoy the shots of yet another spring in the life of a contented angler, and until next week, good sports.

The author, a happy Steelheader, with one of the many beauties “captured” and released recently on NY streams. This one, a male, went about 29 inches and about 9 pounds.

Don holds another male, all brighted up for the spawning run. This one will feed some friends.

A very nicely laid out Steelhead to start out a new season for Dons Reel Sports.

Congratulations to the Proctor Phantoms girls basketball team who won the Division 4 state championship. The first D 4 state title for Proctor and the 2nd in school history. The Phantoms won the D3 state championship in 1984 under Wade Mitchell.

Proctor coach Chris Hughes has pulled off the rare double. Chris won the state title as the girls coach this year after winning the state title as the boys coach in 2000. I believe that’s only been done once before as John Barth of Windsor won state championships with both the Yellow Jackets boys and girls basketball teams. If you can think of any others, let me know.

Mikayala McCormack scored 15 points for the Phantoms in the victory. Mikayla’s cousin Pat McCormack played on two MSJ state championship football teams, an MSJ state championship basketball team and also played on the last winning Vermont Shrine football team in 2000.

Megan Carter’s cousin Ryan Carter played on Proctor’s last state championship boys basketball team in 2009. Megan scored 10 points in Proctor’s win over Twinfield last Saturday. Erin Keefe is another member of the Proctor 2012 state championship girls basketball team. Her dad Chris played for Rutland in that famous game against Rice in 1981 that I wrote about in this column last week.

The Keefe Gym at Rutland High is named after Erin’s great grandfather Bundsie Keefe, Sr. Other winners crowned in basketball were Rice in D1, Hartford in D2, and Oxbow in D3. The winners in girls hockey were Essex in D1 and Burr and Burton in D2 and in boys hockey BFA in D1 and U32 in D2.

All the semi’s and finals in boys and girls basketball and the finals in boys and girls hockey were video cast live on the Northeast Sports Network, Vermont’s Sports Leader. All the games will be available soo on the archives on nsnsports.net if they aren’t already.

On the Saturday of the boys basketball state championship games which did include Norwich mens and womens hockey there were 30,000 views to the nsnsports.net. website. An unbelievable amount of viewers.

It can be said that NSN absolutely smoked all the radio outlets in the state by an incredibly

wide margin. I feel sorry for those who advertised on radio and not on NSN. There will be college softball video cast on nsnsports.net this Saturday March 24th as Castleton will be hosting Skidmore in a doubleheader.starting at 1PM

The Vermont-New Hampshire Shrine football teams got together for the first time this last Sunday at the Lebanon Elks Club. The game is coming up on Saturday August 4th at Dartmouth’s Memorial Field.

A few changes this year: 1. The game will go back to 15 minute quarters from the 12 minute quarters used last year. 2. Overtime will be used for the first time. There have been two ties in Shrine game history. 3. In the 2nd half, if one team is leading by 35 or more points running time will be used.

Last Monday I wrote a blog on nsnsports.net on MSJ’s Division 2 state championship in boys basketball. Here is what I wrote:

Of all the state champions crowned on Saturday in boys basketball, the one that has the most people griping was MSJ’s title in Division 2.

I thought people were past that and whining now is just being a poor loser and chewing sour grapes.

This was a very good MSJ team and it won the state championship because it played the best when it counted the most. They were not unbeatable, they lost twice during the regular season. They could’ve been beaten by Vergennes in the state title game, but they made the plays that gave them the victory. That’s what a championship team does.

They didn’t win by 24 points like Williamstown did in the Division 3 championship game. MSJ won by 8 points.

MSJ was vulnerable. They were not a very good shooting team and were not very good from the free throw line either.

MSJ could’ve been beaten, but they weren’t because they found a way to win.! They never stopped hustling!

Yes they could’ve been beaten, but Vermont was too busy complaining to notice! Virtually the same team lost in the semi last year, but nobody was complaining then.

Stop whining Vermont and tip your cap to a deserving state champion!

Catch you next week!

Special on Friday, May 25, the Vermont State Late Model Championship Series 100 on Friday, June 8, and the Firecracker Twin 44s on Wednesday, July 4. Also included are the Mid-Season Championships on Friday, July 13, Championship Night on Friday, August 31, and the Vermont 200 Weekend on Saturday, September 15 and Sunday, September 16.

The General Admission season pass is just $185, a savings of nearly 12% from the race-day ticket gate price. A Senior General Admission season pass is available for only $145 for race fans age 62 and up. As an added benefit, General Admission season pass holders will get a 15-minute head start in selecting their grandstand seats at every event.

New for 2012 is the Garage Area season pass, a program designed to help save racers money in the long-term. The Garage Area pass is available for a one-time fee of only $450 to NASCAR-licensed drivers, car owners, and crew members. Garage Area pass holders will enjoy a 20% discount for a year-long savings of $111, versus the total weekly price for non-licensed participants.

“We encourage all of our

fans and competitors to take a look at the season pass programs we have in place,” said Devil’s Bowl Speedway owner/promoter Mike Bruno. “Times are tough, and we want our supporters to be able to enjoy their racing at an affordable price. The season passes are a nice alternative and really do save a substantial amount of money in the long run.”

Devil’s Bowl Speedway opens its 46th season of stock car racing on Sunday, May 6, with the Spring Green 112 for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models, along with the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Bond Auto Parts Modifieds, Renegades, and Bombers.
