Case Study I- Improved Package of Practices for Soy farmers
Daulat Khan is a 52 years old soy farmer of village Jamgod with a landholding of 1 acre. Daulat Khan could able to complete his primary education only and he is bearing a responsibility of 11 family members. His major livelihood is farming of rainfedcrops i.e soybean. Besides he cultivates wheat and vegetables on a part of his land. Daulat Khan occasionally takes 1 acre agriculture land on lease depending on the monsoon. Before becoming part of Samruddhi project, Daulat khan’s soy yield was somewhere between 3 to 4 quintals. Major reasons behind low soy yield were; firstly, he was using local seeds which led to lower germination. Further he did not know about seed germination test and its benefits. Secondly, he was not practising fungal treatment to avoid growth of Fungus. Thirdly, due to traditional soy farming practises, the productivity of his agriculture land declined gradually over a period of time. Fourthly, he was unable to protect the matured soy crop from pest infestation. He was totally depended on local Agri input suppliers for prescriptions of pesticides. Lastly, he was following traditional sowing practise which led to incoherent plant growth. When Daulat Khan came to know about Samruddhi project from village animator, Sanjay, he showed great interest in having a demonstration plot for Soybean and decided to put 1 acre of land under soybean cultivation. Under Samruddhi Project, Daulat khan, attended one day training organized by CARD on improved soy agriculture practices. Daulat Khan learnt about good agriculture practises covering; Replacement with certified seeds, Introduction to seed germination test, its process and benefits, Seed treatment, its process and benefits, Sowing distance management, Integrated pest management and Integrated nutrient management. After the training, he stated that sowing distance and integrated pest management were his favourite components of training. Post training, all the 50 beneficiaries received the soy POP (Package of Practises) kits. The project provided all the technical and supervisory support to the beneficiaries during the next four months for soy crop. Daulat Khan has practiced everything from soil testing to fertilizer and pest management during soy sowing. Daulat Khan’s soy yield for this cycle has increased up to 6.97 Quintals per acre. Out of all the 50 beneficiaries, Daulat Khan stood out with maximum soy yield. After comparing the demonstration plot with control plot by CARD, it was found out that Daulat Khan invested around Rs.9555 in demo plot and Rs. 10925 per acre in control plot. Daulat Khan achieved a remarkable net profit of Rs. 11355 per acre in demo
“I am very happy that with the support of Samruddhi project, my soybean yield has increased. It could be possible because of my induction and adoption to best agriculture practices for soy crop. At last I would say I made profit out of total incurred expenditure – Daulat khan”
