He also has an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering qualification, industrial experience (a project-based summer placement) and further work experience in a range of part-time posts. Robert has two CVs – a two-page graduate CV for a Graduate Traineeship in Design Engineering and a one-page CV for a part-time post as a Team Leader in a call centre. Graduate CV: As a design engineer, in whatever branch of engineering Robert chooses to specialise (his Masters allows him to work in almost any engineering discipline, as the focus of his degree is on the use of knowledge-based computer systems to support engineering design). As well as the knowledge gained from his subjects, projects and dissertations, Robert has identified and presented the technical skills he has developed through both his study and his work experience, including his knowledge of software, design skills and practical abilities. In addition, Robert has demonstrated his qualities and attributes and these tie in nicely with the personal skills sought in graduate trainee design engineers – for example, his interpersonal and team working abilities since design engineers often need to work across departments and liaise with both management and clients about their needs. Part-time CV: While completing applications for his first graduate post, Robert has decided to work part-time in a well-paid job to pay his bills. The information that he needs to highlight for a team leader post in a call-centre is different from that of a design engineering one, so he has a one-page CV that highlights his work experience first. Social researchers design, plan, carry out, analyse and collate social research projects using a variety of methodologies and approaches for a number of different purposes. Thus, knowledge of research methodologies and techniques, analytical abilities and project management skills are crucial to the job. In his CV Graham has clearly shown the knowledge he has of social research, both theoretical and practical, and has summarised the key methods he has used. I have been a member of the university chamber choir for two years and regularly participate in a number of concerts. Sport: I enjoy cross-country running, squash and swimming and use these sports as a means of relaxation. Having come straight from school to university, Joe has so far had one Saturday job in his local supermarket and so needs to make the most of this experience to demonstrate to potential employers that he can ‘do the job’. Although Joe’s actual degree subject would seem irrelevant to a part-time job in retail, he has described it in such a way that it strongly conveys transferable skills attractive to retailers; problem-solving, team working and communication skills (each tied in to the context in which he has developed them).
