API has had two primary mechanism for Standards Development:
1) “Traditional” Method for API Standards Development• Project approval, draft development, ballot, comment resolution, publishing
2) U.S. “National Adoption” Process for API Standards Development• ISO standard developed through TC 67
• API is Secretariat of US Technical Advisory Group, or TAG to ISO committees
• API ballot the published ISO standard with goal of National Adoption
• If approved by API committees, ISO standard can become an API standard
• National Adoptions can be identical or modified
API: Mechanisms for Standards Development
12
API now has third approach for standards development:
Participation in IOGP Standards Solution
• IOGP develops standards under its official liaison status to ISO/TC67
• Only participation from non-sanctioned individuals
• Final document transferred to ISO and made available on ISO public website
API: Mechanisms for Standards Development
13
API participation in ISO Committees
• API staff constrained by March 2014 OFAC guidance.
• Cannot exchange technical knowledge to certain sanctioned countries,
unless it is already in the public domain.
• In some circumstances, API staff can participate in ISO committees when
there are no sanctioned individuals present.
• If a sanctioned individual is present, API staff cannot share API technical
information.
API / ISO Engagement
API Goals
✓Find an effective and efficient solution to past challenges related to ISO engagement
