Come On, Phonics 2 ■ Unit focus : Unit 1 Short Vowel “a”

■ Objectives : - To recognize the short vowel “a” sound- To learn words with the short vowel “a” sound- To build confidence in reading and writing short vowel “a” words

■ Lesson duration : 45 minutes

1. GREETINGS & REVIEWA. Greetings- Begin with any daily classroom greetings.

B. Review - Ask students to recall what sound the letter “a” makes and brainstorm some

words that start with the letter “a” like apple, ant, and alligator, etc.- Tell students that they are going to learn some more words with the letter

“a".

Practice 1

1. INTRODUCTION 1A. Listen and Repeat- Have students point to the target letter in their books. Model the short “a”

sound and have students repeat.- Introduce the target words by showing students the short DVD-ROM

animation. Play the animation again and encourage students to repeat after the audio.

- Use the teacher’s Phonics Cards to reinforce what the students saw in the animation. Demonstrate how to blend each sound and practice sounding out the letters and reading the word.

- Practice more by having students listen to Track 03 while following along in their books. Model how students should follow along with their fingers. Have them point to the individual letters as they make each distinct letter sound and glide their finger along the word as they say it.

2. PRACTICE 1A. Listen and Circle- Play Track 04 and have students circle the picture of the word that they

hear.- Use the DVD-ROM to display the correct answers.B. Trace and Say- Have students trace the focus letters with their pencils. After they trace

each “a,” have them stop and say each word.

them to point to the target letter when they say its sound and glide their finger along each word as they read it.

- Continue practicing with the teacher’s flashcards. Show the class the word side of a card. Point to each letter and ask the students to make its sound. Then guide students to read the whole word. Ask for volunteers to come up and act as a leader for the class. Have them point to each letter while the class makes the correct sounds. Then they can ask the class to read the word.

B. Listen and Chant- Play the chant using the CD or DVD-ROM. Play the chant again and have

students chant along.

1. WRAP-UP A. Review- Review the Unit 1 words by placing the teacher’s flash cards around the

classroom. Say a word and have students walk to the matching card. Encourage students to volunteer to pick words too.

B. Assign homework- Assign homework in the Workbook.- Remind students that they can practice what they learned at home with

their DVD-ROMs.

First, ask students to identify the picture on each card. Then show the words on the other side and ask students to read the words. Gently remind students of the answers if they can’t remember.

C. Check Homework- Check the students’ homework. Display the correct answers using the DVD-

ROM and discuss any parts that students may have answered incorrectly.

2. PRACTICE 2A. Listen, Circle, and Match- Have students listen to Track 07. They should circle each word they hear

and draw a line to the corresponding picture. Pause the audio after each word and guide the students in sounding out the words by exaggerating each individual sound. Help students locate the word in their books by asking them to identify which letter makes the beginning sound that they heard. For additional guidance, use a teacher’s flash card. Cover the card and slowly reveal each letter of the word as students are able to identify it.

- Use the DVD-ROM to display the correct answers.

Practice 3 1. PRACTICE 3A. Listen and Circle- Have students listen to Track 08 and circle the words that they hear. When

the students are finished, have them work with a partner to read the words. Remind them that they can decode the word by sounding out the individual letters and then putting them together.

- Allow students to check their answers independently by showing the correct answers with the DVD-ROM.

- Practice making words with the DVD-ROM Phonics Builder. Ask students to identify when a correct word is displayed and read it. Have the students sound out and read any silly words as well.

B. Say, Circle, and Write- Begin by reinforcing the sounds of the letter blends “an” and “at.” Write

them on the board or use teacher’s cards with the first letter covered. Ask students what sounds the individual letters make. Then guide them in making the letter blend sound. Check for comprehension by asking students to read each blend.

- Students should complete the activity on Student Book p. 11 by looking at each picture, saying the matching word, and circling the correct letter blend. Then they should finish writing each word.

- Display the correct answers using the DVD-ROM.

1. WRAP-UP A. Review- Give students time to review by using student flash cards 01-08. Have them

read the words independently or ask them to quiz a partner. Be sure to walk around the classroom and assist any students who are having difficulties.

If students cannot remember all of the focus words, elicit them by giving clues or performing actions that are related to the words. Once all of the cards have been revealed, ask the students to read the words.

C. Check Homework- Check the students’ homework. Display the correct answers using the DVD-

ROM and discuss any parts that students may have answered incorrectly.

1. READINGA. Listen and Read Along- Introduce the reading by showing students the DVD-ROM animation. Ask

students if they spotted the two new sight words. Play the animation again and pause it when a sight word appears. Model how to read the word and have students try to read it too.

- Have students listen to Track 09 while they follow along in their books. Have students listen and follow along with their fingers. Then ask students to read along with the audio.

- Read the story again without any audio. Read together as a class or have students read in groups.

Fun Activity 1. ACTIVITY A. Hidden Pictures- Have students complete the fun activity on Student Book p. 13. Start by

reviewing the words in the clue box. Read or ask a student to read a word and have the students point to the word in their books. After all the words have been read, have the students independently read the words in the clue box. Students can work by themselves or with a partner to find the hidden objects in the picture.

- Display the correct answers with the DVD-ROM.
