I. Purpose – In the Sunflower lab we will determine if the length of time a sunflower seed is soaked in water before planting has an effect on the speed that it will germinate. The control in this lab is a sunflower seed that is not soaked in a damp paper towel before planting and the variable is the length of time the seeds are soaked in water before planting. I think that the longer a seed soaks in a damp paper towel before being planted the quicker it will germinate.

II. Materials-

9 sunflower seeds

9 plastic cups

6 damp paper towels

Ruler

Permanent maker

Dirt

Water

Measuring cup

Tablespoon

III. Procedure – (Note the set-up for the lab will take 3 days).

Day 1 - Wrap 3 sunflower seeds individually in damp paper towels. Day 2 – Wrap 3 different sunflower seeds individually in damp paper towels. Day 3 – Plants will be planted today follow the procedure below:

1. Place 2 cups of dirt in each of the 9 plastic cups. 2. Label each cup 1-9. 3. In cups 1, 2, and 3 place one sunflower seed that has not been in a damp paper

towel. 4. In cups 4, 5, and 6 place one sunflower seed that was placed in the damp cloth

on day 1 (note these will be referred to as seeds that have soaked for 2 days) 5. In cups 7, 8, and 9 place one sunflower seed that was placed in the damp cloth

on day 2 (note these will be referred to as seeds that have soaked for 1 day). 6. Add 1 Tablespoon of water to each cup.

Day 4-10 – 1. Water with 1 tablespoon of water at 9 am daily. 2. Record at 9 am, in the data table below, any observations about the seeds. 3. Place an “X” in the box once the seed has germinated.

V. Conclusion -

The longer a sunflower seed is soaked in a damp paper towel the quicker it will germinate once planted. In the experiment sunflower seeds that were soaked in a damp paper towel for two days germinated either two or three days after being planted in dirt. The sunflower seeds that were not soaked in a damp paper towel did not germinate until they were planted for either five or six days.
