SMALL BUSINESSAND PROMOTION (SBPP)(17th November – 5th December 2014)

Small Business today has assumed extreme significance in the development, planning of any country’s economy. Besides adding to GDP, small business has great potential to fight successfully the universal and acute problem of unemployment and do assist in maximizing use of local resources. In many developing countries, small business development has been taken very seriously. Small Business Planning and Promotion amongst potential entrepreneurs has now been developed professionally. This requires skills for sensing appropriate business opportunities, identifying projects based on market survey, perceiving and mobilizing resources, preparation of project report, technology evaluation and finally meeting formalities needed in setting up of small business enterprise. These small business opportunities require appraisal by the entrepreneur from his perspective as well as that of the banker and support agencies to ensure supply of funds and other inputs. Such planning skills are often found lack among small business entrepreneurs.

To develop such skills, NIESBUD has designed a three -week International Programme on Small Business Planning and Promotion for Colombo Plan Secretariat [SBPP – CPS] from the 17th November - 5th December 2014.

OBJECTIVES

The programme has been designed to enable participants to:

Learn the use and application of various tools, techniques approach, mobilizing resources for starting & running a small business

Understand the use practice and use of various methods of sensing small business opportunities

Enable preparing project/business plan suitable to business location Acquire ability to motivate potential entrepreneurs, planning &

promoting small business Develop a plan of action suitable to the respective countries.

SPECIAL FEATURE

The course emphasis is on the developing skills and ability among the participants to plan and promote small business as entrepreneurs as also the trainers/counselors/ consultant/ managers of small business. It focuses on exercise/practices sessions, action planning and practical applicable of knowledge gained.

COURSE CONTENT

Entrepreneurship & Small Business Small Business Creation Small Business Planning and Appraising Entrepreneurial Qualities for Small business Entrepreneurs Small Business Marketing Small Business Promoters Role and Functions Field Studies

Course Methodology The methodology comprise case studies, exercise, practice session, individual/group assignments, and discussion, implant study and interaction with entrepreneurs and officials of the support agencies. A few training was shown to supplement the class work deliberation.

3. Learning Points

A. Class Room

Class room lectures really enhanced my knowledge about entrepreneurship development and Small Business entities

The lectures inspired me to start my own enterprise and teach SMEs on Entrepreneurship i.e. how to start a business, sustain the business and marketing of products.

I have adequate knowledge on how to prepare a project report, carry out market survey.

I now know the Project Appraisal Techniques and how to carry out Project Monitoring and Implementation.

I now know the vital Entrepreneurial Qualities for Small Business Entrepreneurs.

The programme was structured as such that it would facilitate interaction amongst participants so that they could learn from each other’s experiences. The first part of the programme was classroom learning where the lecturer taught about the subject content followed by structured exercises and skills practices. They used case studies, profile rating, structured exercises, videos, business games, discussions, individual and group work which helped by enhancing my understanding on Small business planning and promotion.

B. Study Visit

I truly appreciate all the study visits we undertook to different places as each place imparted me with vital knowledge pertaining to development.

Visit to AgraIt was a dream turning into reality when I was face to face to one of the Seven Wonders of the World ‘Taj Mahal ’and it’s still number one. We saw the beautiful architectural buildings which were constructed long ago but are superior in design and outlook.

Visit to JaipurJaipur is a beautiful city. We visited the paper making products namely Saleem Paper and were interesting in how waste products of paper can of a high value as the end product. The history of this successful business man has indeed of a great challenge for one to be successful in life.

Visit to historical places/museums/temple:

All the historical places visited were:

highly educative and informative famous for its colorful culture having a rich and eventual past having an identity of its own with an exquisite collection of sculptures, paintings and

decorative wares

Upon these three weeks training I had gain a lot on Small Business Promotion and will imparting some of my knowledge to the clients on;

I would like to take this time to thank the following people who had made this three weeks training a successful one.

My sincere thanks go to the heads of our department who had appointed me to attend this Small Business Promotion Training. It was indeed a great privilege for me since this was my first international trip and the experience gain is really incredible. My heartfelt thanks goes to the Director General, Mr. Arun KumarJha, the management and entire staffs of NIESBUD for running the training courses. A very deep appreciation goes to Course Directors Dr. Rishi Raj Singh, Mr. Sunil Taneja (Overall Coordination) and the accounts department for organizing this programme successfully and with full dedication. Not to forget the wonderful job done by all the Hostel and Catering staff, IT Section and Mr. Murli for always helping us in our little worries(Murli bank)and Murli top up please.

The Colombo Plan secretariat who finances the travelling from my country to India and the Government of India with all the hospitality and the study tour in which were all educational and one will not ever leave a memory of it.
