The Danish WarTilly’ssuccessesincentralandnorthernGermanyhelpedtriggerthenextstageoftheThirtyYearsWar.TheLutheranstates in the Baltic felt particularly threatened by theCatholicLeaguesactivities, andoppositionbegantogatheraround Christian IV of Denmark. Through treaties andalliances,England,FranceandtheDutchRepublicofferedsupporttotheBalticpower.RangedagainstthemwasthestillvictoriousarmyofTillyandnowanewcommanderintheformofAlbrechtvonWallensteinwhohadpromisedtoraise50,000troopsfortheImperialcause.
Once again, the military contest was concluded rapidly.Mansfeld suffered defeat at the hands of Wallenstein’sarmyatDessauBridge in1626and inthesameyeartheDaneswheredefeatedbyTillyatLutter.TheImperialandCatholicLeagueforcesappearedunstoppable,Tilly’sarmybegan to occupy Denmark and Wallenstein’s forces tookRostock and Wismar on the north German coast. Facedwiththeprospectoftotaldefeat,theDanishkingagreedtoterms,signingthePeaceofLübeckin1629wherebyhewasallowedtokeephishereditarylandsofSchleswigandHolsteinprovidedhegaveupall claim tonorthGermanterritory.
FollowingthedefeatofDenmarkandwiththeProtestant
forces seemingly fatallyweakened, in1629 theEmperorFerdinandIIimposedtheEdictofRestitutionwhichrequiredtherestorationtoCatholicauthorityallChurchlandslostsince 1552.Thiswhipped up fear and anger in northernGermanyandgaverisetotheprospectoffurtherrebellionagainst the Emperor, a threat foreseen by Wallenstein.TheEmperorspositionwasfurtherweakenedwhenhewaspersuadedtodismissWallensteinbythosewhoquestionedthe ImperialCommanders loyaltyandfearedhisgrowingpower. At the start of 1630, the Emperor had very fewalliesindeed.
