EDITOR'S NOTES

THE SUPPLY DEPOT ENDS!

As discussed in the last issue, The Courier has discontinued the Supply Depot. Subscribers will note on the Dummy Cover a special sale of all products still left. This will be on a f irst come, fi rst served basis and no back orders will be taken. When the stock is gone, there is no more, so please list alternates.

The Courier will continue to run specials that will be available on an " only while stocks last" basis and all such offers will be good until the next issue comes out. We will continue to offer "Cou rier Book Specials" to subscribers only as well as discounts on our own publications. Please Note: As of December 1, we are st ill waiting for our shipment of "Charge". Those who have ordered them p lease be patient.

THE COURIER NEEDS ARTIClES!

The Courier is running short of articl es for th e Napoleonic period and for the Skirmish sect ion. We ca n always use articles for other periods as well. For details, se nd a stamped self-addressed envelope to The Courier, P.O . Box 1878, Brockton , MA 02401.

SUPPORT ADVERTISERS

One way to insure that The Courier continues to be printed is to support the adverti sers who support The Courier. Whenever you buy from one of them, please be sure to let them know that you saw their advert isement in these pages. It is especially important that you at least solicit further information from the people whose full color back page advertisements suppo rt our full color covers. This is particularly true when that company is not a miniatures company or one not even in the hobby. You don't have to buy unless you are interested, but do send them an inquiry, so that they know The Courier is reaching a lot of potential customers.

ERRATA VIJ-1 BRICE'S CROSSROADS SCENARIO

I n the scenario we omitted the set -on requirements:

INITIAL SET-ON: The Union player se ts on first. Waring's Brigade deploys within a one-foot rad ius of the Humphrey house. Winslow's Bri gade deploys within an 18" radius of the Ames house. Winslow may take his initial movement as if mounted, but is dismounted at the end of the move. Waring's men are co nsidered dismounted at the beginning of the game. Sturgis himself enters w ith the infantry as indicated under SPECIAL SCENARIO RULES.

A fter the Union player has deployed , the Confederate player sets on Lyon's Brigade and the Escort Squadron within 18" of the point where the Wire Road leaves the east edge o f the table. The balance of the Confederate force enters as indicated under SPECIAL SCENARIO RULES.

Also, the Map Scale is H~t = 500 yards, not %" = 500 yards.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE COURIER STAFF

THE IMPERIAL GUARD OF NAPOLEON THE LITTLE

BY PAT CONDRAY

GUIDES DE LA GARDE 1855-70

Napoleon III did not inherit a Guard Corps when he became Emperor of France. The Royal Guard had fallen by the wayside when the Citizen King gave way to President Bonaparte. A lso, since the Empire was supposed to provide for peace and stabi lity, it did not seem immediately politic to create such a force.

LIGHT CAVALRY

The first regiment to be raised , which is credited with making the whole id ea of an Im perial Guard popular, was the regiment of Gu ides. This co lorful unit wore dark green dolman and pelisse covered with aurora lace, the tro users being red with aurora Hungarian lace on the thigh . The headgea r was a fu ll bu sby reminiscent of those of the Chasseurs a Cheva l of Uncle Napo leon's gua rd, with red bag, aurora trim , and white p lume with green base. Officers substituted gold for much of the aurora. Shabraques we re of coa t color w ith au rora edging and crowned N 's, sabertache green with aurora and red edging, and aurora troph ies in the ce nter. The Guides were armed with sabers of an orienta l pattern and normally paraded without carb ines although carbines were issued on campaign. This regiment was formed from picked men of the light cavalry and spent much time on parades and horsemanship exercises which deli ghted and impressed military and civil ians alike, thus paving the way for the acceptance of the rest of the Imperial Guard.

Once the idea caught on. a regiment of Chasseurs a Cheval was added, which very much resembled the Guides. but had white instead of aurora lace. and genera lly paraded without pelisse and with carbines. The trousers of thi s regiment were "en lasa lle " with fa lse boots. and even the trumpeters are sometimes shown w ith carbines. Together with the Guides. they formed the light brigade of the Guard.

CHASSEURS A CHEVAL OF THE GUARD

The medium brigade consisted of lancers and dragoons - both variously claiming the patronage of the Empress Eugenie. The dragoons looked very much like Dragons de l' lmperatrice of the first empire, with green coat and white plastron. The helmet lacked turban, but was decorated with much engraving, and had a black horsehair plume and red side plume. Belting was wh ite. Trumpeters wore reversed colors, and the shou lder arm was rifled. Buttons were of brass, epaulettes of soldiers white, officers gold, trumpeters wore reversed colors with red horsehair plume, side plume white topped with red . The trousers were the fa miliar red of the second empire (green for the trumpeters). Shabraques were green trimmed white and red, w ith the crowned N in white. Cuffs and turn backs on the short coat were green but had thin red trim. The brigade mates of the dragoons were the Guard Lancers. This co lorfu l regiment paraded in wh ite kurtka, with pointed cuffs, plastron, and collar of light blue, shabraque light blue trimmed white, czapska with black bottom, white middle band, light blue top, and red p lume, w ith a large brass plate in f ront and brass chin scales. A red fouragere with tassels adorned the front of the plastron on parade. The lance penant was white over red, pantaloons en lasalle red with light blue twin stripes. For trumpeters colors were reversed, w hile officers had gold belting, pants stripes, and epaulettes (red for the t roop). In the fi eld th is regiment wore a light blue kurtka piped w hite - w hich may account for the malicious rumor that their own brigade mates mistook them for uhlans and charged them at Acres sur Yron (Mars la Tour) .
